Floating Rock
Revere fave's reborn in Central Square
485 Mass Ave, at Douglass; Central Square; 617.455.4009
It's never easy to follow in your parents' footsteps, especially if they keep doubling back, and covering their tracks with brush. Managing to navigate that tricky path regardless, the chick behind Floating Rock, soft opening Friday.
Trading careers in both finance and the music industry in favor of taking over the family biz, the UMass-Boston grad behind the reborn FR has translated her parents' popular-but-tiny Revere spot into a sleek 116-seat Central Square destination slinging a slimmed-down repertoire of Cambodian classics in a completely overhauled space now rocking a full bar, beige walls/banquettes, mahogany tables, mod track lighting, and handcarved Asian wood statues -- just don't make a joke about their size. Old and new faves include mint-garnished chicken lemon soup w/ 'shrooms; Lok Lak, stir-fried beef w/ a lemon dipping sauce served on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions; and beef w/ jalapenos, roasted ground rice, and a homemade fish sauce traditionally known as Tiger Tears, which happen a lot more frequently now that they know where all their blood's been going. There's also deliciousness like a shrimp, sliced pork, and mango salad; a tamarind-sauced filet mignon w/ sweet potatoes and asparagus; and deep-fried tilapia w/ ginger, ground pork, and pickled soy beans, which clearly don't know how to hold a proper lead off the bag.
For your sweet tooth/drinking issues, FR's working w/ neighboring Toscanini's on a specialty (think Durian/Jackfruit) ice cream and pouring Pacific Rim brews (eventually to include rarities like Angkor), litchi/green tea Martinis, and a ginger liqueur-heavy lineup of Asian-themed cocktails served in oversized "love bowls", which is what your parents promised you all were doing, when they left you in the Lucky Strike parking lot, and vanished into those woods.
They're also selling discounted gift cards until the official Apr 1st grand opening!!! Score yours when you check opening updates at FloatingRockRestaurant.com or on Facebook.com
