Road signs warn of zombies, tanks

FORT MILL, S.C. (UPI) -- The South Carolina Highway Patrol said a pair of electronic road signs were tampered with to warn motorists of "zombies," "hunters" and "tanks."

Lance Cpl. Billy Elder of the Highway Patrol said the signs on S.C. 160 near the border of York and Lancaster Counties were altered sometime before 4 a.m. Sunday to scroll the messages "Zombies Ahead," "Watch for Hunters" and "Be alert for Tanks," The (Rock Hill) Herald reported Monday.

"I don't know if the signs got hacked remotely or if someone tampered with them on scene," Elder said.

Elder said the South Carolina Department of Transportation was notified and the signs were shut off Sunday night.

Man marks 100th birthday with skydive

WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania man celebrated his 100th birthday by jumping out of an airplane 13,000 feet over the Earth.

Fred Mack of Newtown Square said his tandem skydiving jump Sunday at Free Fall Adventures in Williamstown, N.J., was the culmination of a promise he made five years ago when he made his first-ever skydiving jump to mark his 95th birthday, KYW-TV, Philadelphia, reported Monday.

"I'm still alive," Mack said after landing Sunday.

Dr. Elliot Gerber, Mack's cardiologist, said he contacted Guinness World Records about the centenarian's accomplishment.

"I cleared him last time, this time they didn't ask for me to sign off," Gerber said. "Mack has been my patient for 20 years and he is in great shape. He's an amazing man."

Woman finds frog in can of beans

LEXINGTON, Ky. (UPI) -- A Kentucky woman said she found a dead frog in a can of green beans she purchased at a grocery store.

Priscilla Owens of Lexington said she made the discovery Sunday inside the can of Wylwood Blue Lake Cut Green Beans she purchased a week or two previously at the Save-A-Lot store on North Broadway, WLEX-TV, Lexington, Ky., reported Monday.

"I poured it in there and I was like, 'God help me, please,'" she said, adding the frog was "the grossest thing I've ever seen."

Owens said store officials told her they are investigating the find.

"They were like, 'well we'll look into it, but you can come bring the can back to the store and we'll replace it,' and I was like, 'No, no, I'm going to see what I can do to try and get that batch off the shelf,'" Owens said.

Save-A-Lot officials said they were unable to comment, WLEX-TV said.

Warm temperatures bring out Ariz. snakes

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (UPI) -- Authorities in Arizona said the arrival of warmer weather has brought about a sharp increase in calls for snake removal.

Daniel Marchand, curator at the Phoenix Herpetological Society in Scottsdale, said the recent arrival of 80-degree and 90-degree weather has brought the snakes out from their winter hiding spots, The Arizona Republic reported Monday.

"Once the temperature hits 80 degrees, the snakes will wake up hungry, thirsty and looking for mates," Marchand said.

Scottsdale Fire Department spokeswoman Tiffani Nichols said recent weeks have seen "10 to 15 snake-removal scenarios every day."

Marchand warned residents to be particularly alert for venomous rattlesnakes. He urged anyone who spots such a reptile to keep their distance and call for help.

"The $75 fee for our service is nothing compared to average snakebite medical bills," Marchand said.
