MICROSOFT FINALIZES WINDOWS EMBEDDED COMPACT 7
Microsoft has announced the final release of its Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system. A 180-day trial version of the OS -- including new developer and designer tools, support for ARM v7, Adobe Flash 10.1 support, and more -- is now downloadable from the company's website. VIRTUALIZATION-READY ATOM DEBUTS IN 256-PROCESSOR SERVER
Yet another Atom processor has broken cover -- this time offering 64-bit processing, the ability to use up to 4GB of RAM, and support for hardware virtualization. The 1.66GHz N570 will be offered first in SeaMicro's SM10000-64 server, which employs 256 of the chips in a 10U rackmount case.

AMD SPINS LOW-POWER CPUS FOR HEADLESS DEVICES
AMD has been touting its "Fusion" line of "accelerated processing units" -- devices incorporating x86 CPUs along with graphics on a single die. But now the company has announced three G-Series processors that are distinctly un-fused: aimed at headless embedded applications, they save power by leaving the graphics out.

SPRINT'S WINDOWS PHONE ARRIVES WITH SLIDE-OUT KEYBOARD
Sprint says its first Windows Phone 7 device will be available on March 20 for approximately $200. The HTC Arrive will include a 3.6-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a five megapixel camera, 16GB of flash storage, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, according to the carrier.

THUNDERBOLT WEAVES PCI EXPRESS AND DISPLAYPORT ONTO SINGLE CABLE
As expected, Apple and Intel have announced "Thunderbolt," a rebranded version of the latter's "Light Peak" technology. Initially available on three MacBook Pro notebooks, it offers 10Gb/sec. data transfer, the ability to daisy-chain six peripherals, plus both PCI Express and DisplayPort support, according to the companies.

ATOM E6XX PC IS CLAIMED TO BE WORLD'S SMALLEST
Toradex announced a tiny single board computer (SBC) with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom E6xx, and also debuted a PC based on it that's claimed to be "the world's smallest." The "Topaz" SBC underlies the fanless, aluminum-housed "Xiilun," which measures 3.50 x 2.36 x 0.63 inches, features up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and offers a bootable microSD slot, DVI-D, and four USB 2.0 ports.

BUSINESS-ORIENTED TABLET RUNS WINDOWS CE
Panasonic announced a business-oriented tablet that runs Windows CE, includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and provides eight hours of cordless operation. The BizPad JT-H380VT offers handwriting recognition, wireless networking, an SD slot, plus options that include a camera, barcode scanner, and 3G cellular modem, according to the company.

VIA TOUTS LOWEST-POWER DUAL-CORE CPU, BUT KEEPS NUMBERS A SECRET
Via Technologies announced a new chip it claims is the world's most power-efficient dual-core processor. The Eden X2 runs fanlessly, is compatible with 64-bit instructions, offers an out-of-order x86 architecture, and provides hardware-based data encryption, the company says.

RSODIMM: A LOW-COST WAY TO MAKE SODIMMS RUGGED
Accelerated Memory Production (AMP), Apacer, and Diamond Systems unveiled a memory standard that's said to provide a cost-effective way of adding memory to rugged devices. RSODIMM satisfies reliability requirements affordably by simply adding 10mm of height and two mounting holes to the industry-standard SODIMM form factor, the companies say.

OAK TRAIL TABLET HAS DUAL-MODE DIGITIZER, FINGERPRINT READER
Fujitsu announced a Windows 7 tablet PC touted as "building in security from the ground up." The Stylistic Q550 uses Intel's Atom Z670 ("Oak Trail") CPU, includes a capacitive touchscreen along with pen support, offers 30GB or 62GB of SSD (solid state disk) storage, includes a fingerprint sensor and smart card reader, and is available with a 3G cellular modem, the company says.

FREESCALE SPINS CORTEX-A8 SOCS, TABLET DESIGN, AND $149 DEV BOARD
Freescale Semiconductor announced two new members of its i.MX53 family of Cortex-A8 system-on-chips: an industrial-focused, 800MHz i.MX37 and the consumer-oriented, 1GHz i.MX538. Also unveiled were a $149 "Quick Start" development board for the original i.MX535 SoC, as well as a 10.1-inch, $1,499 "SABRE" tablet reference design, both compatible with Windows Embedded Compact 7, Linux, and Android.

WINDOWS TABLET'S DESIGNED TO BE A THIN CLIENT FOR DOCTORS
Barco announced a 12.1-inch tablet designed as a portable thin client for medical applications. The ProScribe MTPP-0212 runs Windows Embedded Standard on a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, has 1GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage, includes a resistive touchscreen with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, and survives one-meter drops onto concrete, the company says.

WINDOWS HANDHELDS TARGET HIGH-ACCURACY MAPPING
Trimble announced two Windows Mobile handheld computers designed for high-accuracy data collection using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). The GeoExplorer 6000 devices achieve up to four-inch accuracy in real time, support both GPS and GLONASS, include five megapixel cameras, and have sunlight-readable 4.2-inch screens, according to the company.

WEARABLE, ATOM-POWERED COMPUTER READY FOR ROUGH FIELD DUTY
Eurotech subsidiary Parvus announced two Windows-compatible, Intel Atom-based devices aimed primarily at the military market. The Zypad BR2000 is a rugged, 1.8-pound, wearable computer and vehicle server with wireless options and flash-based storage, while the DuraCOR 830 is a rugged tactical mission processor subsystem with dual avionics interfaces and PC/104 expansion, says the company.
