On This Day 1937: Gas Leak Explosion Kills 300 at Texas School

Dear Readers,

On March 18, 1937, the worst school disaster in American history occurred when a gas explosion killed nearly 300 schoolchildren in Texas. Our article includes a link to a newsreel about the tragedy released two days later, as well as this quote from a young field reporter: "Grief was everywhere. Almost everyone you ran into had lost a member of his family. Yet they went about doing everything they could to help each other." The reporter was Walter Cronkite.

John Hoyer Updike was born in Reading, Pa. on March 18, 1932. He was one of America's most beloved authors, known for "The Witches of Eastwick," the "Rabbit" novel series and his final work, "The Widows of Eastwick," published just months before his death on Jan. 27, 2009.  Read our full profile.

High School Journalism Curriculum:

A librarian asked for advice on helping a teacher create a curriculum for a new course on high school journalism. My response:

"There are so many outstanding resources online that are directly on point, from which a course pack could be created. I found all the resources below on the 1st or second page, here:"
