Iconic Harvard hotel opens hep new resto/lounge

It's never easy making something old look young and hip, unless you're the CEO of Abercrombie, in which case you can totally pull off that "Suck Me Beautiful" vintage wash tee, and destroyed selvedge skinny jeans...just kidding, dude, you're terrifying! Skillfully turning old into new without resorting to bleach and tight tweener clothing, Nubar, opening today.
Nestled within Harvard's iconic Sheraton Commander Hotel since the 1920s, the third-generation family owners of the 84-year old spot decided it was time for a fresh vibe, completely overhauling the former Garden Street R&L into a sleek, 100-seat, clubby neighborhood parlor with massive handforged iron candelabras, and an illuminated bar made entirely of honey onyx, which finally explains why that dude's got Sticky Fingaz. For fireside imbibing, they're pouring artisanal spirits (Triple Eight Nor'easter, 1792 Ridgemont Bourbon) and throwback craft cocktails like a Sazerac, the Broadnax Jazz Age Manhattan, and The Harvard Garden (gin, St-Germain Elderflower, cucumber), as well as select suds like St. Paulie Girl and Trinity, which isn't very hard to get into, assuming you're rich. Choice dinner fare includes grilled pork loin w/ fregola and littleneck clams; braised lamb shoulder over pappardelle pasta w/ olives, pecorino, and sundried tomatoes; and pan-roasted duck with a rhubarb/tart cherry gastrique and wild rice pancakes, which didn't happen very often to Simeon until he lost his knees.
NB also plates a solid lineup of small bites like flatbread 'zas (caramelized onion, bacon, Gruyere), sammies (chicken, bacon & avocado w/ Muenster on sourdough), and apps like a crispy mascarpone risotto cake w/ lobster, morel, and ragout made from spring veggies, because -- as that dude from 'crombie confirms -- there ain't no spring chickens around.
