Opens Apr 19th at the Iroquois Hotel: 49 W 44th St; btwn 5th and 6th Ave; Midtown West; 212.453.4233
Breaking a slump usually requires either a change of scenery or getting laid, so either way it's all about bushes. To drink the efforts of our ancestors' slump-busting, hit up Lantern's Keep.
Coming from Raine's Lawroom to mix it up at the Iroquois' swanky new parlor, mixologist Meaghan Dorman's cocktails were inspired by the myriad bartenders who escaped America's alcohol slump (i.e., temperance) by fleeing to "friendlier destinations in Europe", which also plays out in the decor: a marble-laden antique library with touches like candelabras and chairs upholstered in blue velvet (though afterward don't expect to Mulholland drive anywhere). Craft dedication starts well before any mixers are poured, with four highly specific ice types including a Collins-sized cylinder that's made by a machine they received as a gift for the opening, a 2" cube called the Akamoto Dead Clear, and 1.25" cube Kold Drafts, making buttery nipples hard. Properly frosty (and appropriately rotating) bevs include a classic gin Floradora with fresh raspberry replacing Framboise and ginger syrup subbing for ale; an apple brandy & sweet vermouth Star that adds orange bitters to the requisite Angostura; and a Boulevardier (bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth) that's served on a singular rock, so ironically the recipe includes no Plymouth.
Complementing it all's a selection of Euro/NY beers, vino, and small plates from neighboring Triomphe like chicken liver crostini w/ sherry onions, and seared scallops w/ foie gras butter, a unholy combination ensuring the only way you'll see new bush is if you're a gardener.
