Students worldwide addicted to media

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (UPI) -- It doesn't matter if a college student lives in the United States, Chile, China, Slovakia, Mexico or Lebanon -- many are addicted to media, researchers say.

Susan D. Moeller of the University of Maryland and the director of International Center for Media & the Public Agenda says whether in developing countries or developed countries the findings are strikingly similar in how teens and young adults use media and how "addicted" they are to their cellphone, laptop or mp3 player.

The researchers and colleagues at the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change asked about 1,000 students in 10 countries on five continents to give up all media for 24 hours and record their experiences.

The study found the students reacted almost identically to being unplugged from media and used virtually the same words to describe their reactions, including: fretful, confused, anxious, irritable, insecure, nervous, restless, crazy, addicted, panicked, jealous, angry, lonely, dependent, depressed, jittery and paranoid.

"Perhaps naively, we assumed that we would find substantial differences among the students who took part in this study," Moeller says in a statement.

"After all, our partner universities come from very different regions and from countries with great disparities in economic development, culture and political governance."

In short, the students were blind-sided by how much media have come to dominate their lives and their identity, Moeller says.

Breast milk may help detect cancer risk

AMHERST, Mass. (UPI) -- In the future, a personalized assessment of breast cancer risk may be calculated by examining epithelial cells in breast milk, U.S. researchers suggest.

Environmental toxicologist Kathleen Arcaro of University of Massachusetts Amherst says because about 80 percent of women give birth, non-invasively testing their breast milk for early indicators of elevated breast cancer risk would provide screening for a majority of women at an earlier age.

Arcaro and colleagues collected breast milk samples from about 250 women nationwide who were scheduled for or who had already had a breast biopsy.

The researchers looked for evidence of an epigenetic response called methylation -- inhibit or suppress -- in three genes: RASSF1, GSTP1 and SFRP1. The first two genes help in tumor suppression; the last makes a detoxification protein. Early detection of methylation in breast tissue is a key in preventing cancer, Arcaro says.

Arcaro and colleagues compared methylation levels in cells from biopsied versus non-biopsied breasts and observed greater methylation in the biopsied breast samples.

"This methylation means that the helpful, tumor-suppressing genes are silenced, putting the woman at higher risk of developing breast cancer," Arcaro says in a statement. "This in itself is not enough, we need to look at a larger panel of genes."

Arcaro presented the findings at the American Association for Cancer Research's 102nd annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

Abused men can suffer psychological trauma

LONDON (UPI) -- U.S. men who say they have been sexually or physically assaulted by an intimate partner can suffer significant psychological trauma, researchers say.

Lead author Anna Randle of the Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care, an alternative to institutional, residential and group care placements for adolescents with severe conduct disorders and Cynthia A. Graham of Brunel University, both in England, reviewed two decades of research involving domestic violence effects on men.

The review, published in the Psychology of Men & Masculinity, found men abused by their female partners can suffer significant psychological trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and suicidal thoughts.

The National Violence against Women Survey, which surveyed 8,000 men and 8,000 women, in 1998, indicates 8 percent of men and 25 percent of women report being assaulted sexually or physically by an intimate partner.

However, research has shown severe under reporting of spousal or partner abuse of men, Randle says. For example, men are not as likely to report serious injuries due to abuse and psychological or less violent abuse is more likely to go unreported to authorities.

In addition, police are less likely to arrest female suspects accused of violence than males, Randle says.

"Given the stigma surrounding this issue and the increased vulnerability of men in these abusive relationships, we as mental health experts should not ignore the need for more services for these men," Randle says in a statement.

Elf ears gaining in popularity

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A body modification artist in Phoenix says he can perform cosmetic surgery on ears to give them a pointy, Dr. Spock-like appearance.

It will cost you $600 for the non-reversible surgery, which if performed by Phoenix artist Steve Haworth must be done with no anesthesia because he is not licensed to practice medicine, the New York Daily News reported.

"There's a lot of people out there who have an inner vision of themselves and they want to express that to the world around them," Haworth told ABC News. "I'm very happy to be an artist that can provide that kind of work."

The procedure involves cutting open the tips of the ear and sculpting the cartilage into elf points. Besides being painful, the procedure can cause other problems.

Some doctors say cartilage sculpting can cause ear deformities and dangerous infections that can destroy ears within a few days.

The concerns weren't enough to keep Jordan Houtz from having the procedure. She said she had been thinking about having it done for 18 months.

"It just fits my personality," Houtz said.
