Diabetes makes you older before your time ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPI) -- People in their 50s with diabetes may age before their time compared with their diabetes-free counterparts, U.S. researchers say. Dr. Christine Cigolle, an assistant professor of family medicine and internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, says adults ages 51-70 with diabetes developed age-related ailments such as cognitive impairment, incontinence, falls, dizziness, vision impairment and pain at a faster rate than those without diabetes. For adults age 51-60 with diabetes, the odds of developing new geriatric conditions were nearly double those who didn't have diabetes, but by the time people with and without diabetes reach 80, the disparities begin to disappear, says Cigolle, the study's lead author. "Our findings suggest that middle-age adults with diabetes start to accumulate these age-related problems," Cigolle says in a statement. "Because diabetes affects multiple organ systems, it has the potential to contribute significantly to the development of a number of issues that we associate with aging." Possible cure for hepatitis C promising BERLIN (UPI) -- Drugs used to treat hepatitis C that previously failed were more successful using different parameters, researchers at a conference in Germany say. Professor Heiner Wedemeyer, secretary-general of the European Association for Study of the Liver, says with different treatment and dosing, several clinical trials demonstrated good response rates during the treatment period and with remarkably high-sustained viral response rates. The findings provide hope for a growing number of hepatitis C patients who cannot currently be effectively treated for chronic hepatitis, Wedemeyer said. The findings, presented at the International Liver Congress, found retreatment standard care regimens only achieves sustained virological response in 10 percent to 20 percent of patients, but the new trial data show sustained virological response rates of 40 percent 80 percent when protease inhibitors -- a class of drugs used to treat hepatitis C. "Up until now, telling a patient that their treatment has failed has been particularly difficult knowing that there were no other options available and their disease was progressing. These results completely change the situation because patients who did not have successful treatment in the past now have a realistic chance of being cured," Wedemeyer says. "For both clinicians and patients, this is a new era in the treatment of viral hepatitis C, which is very exciting." Copyright 2011 by United Press International

Alternative tool finds prostate cancer IRVINE, Calif. (UPI) -- In patients suspected of having prostate cancer, analyzing non-tumor tissue may be an effective option, California researchers say. Dr. Dan Mercola, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of California at Irvine, says there are more than 1 million U.S. prostate biopsies annually but the tests can miss up to 30 percent of clinically significant prostate cancers and about one-third of patients receive repeat biopsies within a year. "A biopsy needle does not need to hit a tumor to detect the presence of tumor," Mercola, the lead researcher, says in a statement. Mercola and colleagues obtained 364 samples from men of all races who had biopsies for possible prostate cancer, or had prostatectomies -- removal of the prostate -- as well as control prostates from donors who died of causes other than prostate cancer. The study, published in the journal Cancer Research, said the researchers observed changes in the nearby non-tumor tissue and found changes in gene expression in normal tissue could be detected up to a few millimeters from prostate cancer. "We were surprised that a reaction may occur for most tumors, and that this response in non-tumor tissue may extend for many millimeters from the tumor," Mercola says. Houston reports infant measles case HOUSTON (UPI) -- A baby has contracted Houston's first confirmed measles case in six years, health officials say. The Houston Area Health Alert Network issued an alert Friday that an 11-month-old girl who attended a Cirque du Soleil performance at Sam Houston Race Park on March 20 developed fever the next day and a rash three days later, The Houston Chronicle reported. The baby later tested positive for the contagious virus but is recovering, said Kathy Barton of the city health department. Barton said the child's possible contacts with at-risk people are being investigated, but her family members are immune. It is suspected the baby was infected during a March 2-8 trip to Orlando, Fla. The alert network said there have been multiple confirmed cases around the United States in recent months, including in Minnesota, Massachusetts and Florida.
