T.H.E. Core of Performance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROBERT REPORTS
Nutrition plays a vital role in one's ability to perform at work, at the gym, and
in our personal relationships. In a perfect world, we all need to eat a well balanced
diet of whole foods about every 2-3 hours to fuel our basic metabolic functions.
For optimal physical and mental performance we may look to nature's most unique
nutrients to spark and catalyze our energy reserves.[1]
The Russian herb known as rhodiola, also known as golden root, was one of the unintentionally
best kept secrets in the Soviet Union. This herb falls into the category of adaptogen,
which is a compound that allows our bodies to adapt to stress and other external
factors. The biologically active constituents of rholdiola are salidroside, rosin,
rosavin, rosarin and tyrosol.[2] These compounds provide most of the therapeutic
and adaptogenic properties of the herb. The active constituents of rhodiola also
affect the central nervous system by increasing our ability to concentrate and focus.
Rhodiola also improves our general immunity or resistance, and prevents the heart
system from excessive stress and arrhythmias.[3]
The majority of research performed on rhodiola rosea has been geared specifically
towards improving physical and mental performance. Rhodiola rosea has been shown
to delay fatigue and improve energy utilization during exercise. Muscle proteins
and glutamic acid levels have been shown to be enhanced when supplemented with rhodiola.
It has even been linked to increased creatine phosphate and ATP (energy) levels,
which is at the core of our generation of cellular energy production. This research
has led scientists to believe that rhodiola may increase strength and lean body
mass.[4]
Research has been shown that rhodiola rosea helps reduce the stress that occurs
secondary to exercise by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system which causes
relaxation, as opposed to the sympathetic nervous system which causes stimulation.
These are many of the results of over 35 years of intensive clinical studies on
rhodiola rosea at leading Soviet and Scandinavian clinics, a particularly outstanding
one being the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems at the Russian Federation
Ministry of Health. Their research has shown that this nutrient can help increase
protein synthesis and actually removes ammonia from the blood - an extraordinary
detoxifying effect. It also has been shown to increase blood supply to the muscles
and the brain, naturally improving athletic and mental performance.[5] As the scientific
research on rhodiola rosea appears to improve both physical and mental performance,
we recommend Jarrow Formulas Rholdiola rosea 500, a standardized extract and a highly
reputable source of the herb.
In a recent study out of the University of Exeter (UE) England, researchers discovered
that L-arginine, one of the 20 most common natural amino acids, helps increase exercise
capacity by 20 percent. This is due to a substance called nitric oxide or (NO).
It is an important substance produced by the body that regulates blood flow, fights
harmful pathogens and assists in our cell communication. In addition, NO also helps
to improve the efficiency of nutrient delivery to our muscle tissue. Via oxygen,
this increased nutrient delivery efficiency is a major reason why higher levels
of NO improve physical performance.
Further research has confirmed that when L-arginine was used there was a striking
increase in performance, altering the use of oxygen during exercise. Professor Andrew
Jones of Exeter, UE's School of Sport and Health Sciences reported that L-arginine
and NO are very important nutrients for endurance athletes, as he concurred that
it appears to increase our oxygen consumption, thus improving performance output.
Research showed that L-arginine not only improved performance levels, but it helped
to lower blood pressure and reduce the amount of oxygen required for exercise. We
recommend an American standard in the supplemental amino acid industry which is
TwinLab L-Arginine, the semi-essential amino acid.
Green Tea has been used traditionally in China for more than 4,000 years to control
blood sugar levels and as a general health tonic. New research suggests that green
tea may help prevent the development of type 1 diabetes and slow the progression
once it has developed. The problem with type 1diabetes is that individuals produce
little or no insulin, a hormone that helps convert glucose (sugar), starches, and
other foods into energy needed for fueling the body. The fact is green tea can help
regulate glucose in the body and can provide for improved insulin utilization and
thus extended energy.[7] Research has been shown that green tea has a unique ability
to increase our energy levels both physically and mentally with or without caffeine.
In a recent 2009 study, researchers tested green and white tea's anti-obesity effects
in a series of experiments on human fat cells. Results showed that white and green
tea extracts prompted fat to break down in existing fat cells. Most interesting,
green and white tea seemed to reduce the expression of genes crucial to the growth
of new fat cells.[8]
Agriculture Research Scientist (ARS) and chemist Richard Anderson has found that
green tea when added to the fat cells of laboratory rats, increased insulin activity
by more than 15 times. He also noted that this increased insulin activity was found
with green, black, and white teas, regardless of whether caffeinated or decaffeinated.
Most interesting, his research showed that green and white teas contain the catechin
called EGCG, which is largely responsible for many of the therapeutic properties
of the herb. Simply put, the increased insulin utilization provides for better
energy conversion and physical performance.[9]
.
The compound EGCC in green tea is believed to enhance the production of norepinephrine,
a hormone used by the sympathetic nervous system to release stored energy from fat.[10]
The caffeine in green tea also stimulates thermogenesis, but the thermogenic properties
of green tea greatly outweigh that of caffeine. The flavonoids in green tea also
restrict the enzyme catechol O-methyl-transferase (COMT), which is the enzyme that
restricts norephinephrine. Now, norephinephrine is able to act freely on the metabolism
and fat oxidation. Green tea's composition of polyphenols and caffeine exercises
a thermogenic result, aiding in fat oxidation and speeding up the metabolic process.[11]
We want to recommend one of the very best sources for high quality green tea extract,
Natural Factors Green Tea Phytosome. This product you can depend on for quality
delivered. It has an enhanced absorption complex that provides seven milligrams
of the constituent EGCG.
Vitamin B complex actually refers to a selection of nutrients with some very similar
properties. They are separate functional nutrients, although most of them work in
synergy. B-Complex vitamins are a mixture of eight essential B-vitamins that our
bodies require on a daily basis. The vitamin B-complex refers to all of the known
essential water-soluble vitamins except for vitamin C. The B vitamins that specifically
promote energy production are pantothenic acid and pantethine. They help produce
a substance called Coenzyme A (CoA). CoA is then converted into acetyl-CoA by the
addition of acetic acid and glucose before entering our energy production system
called the Krebs Cycle. The addition of this acetyl group is the second step in
cellular respiration and our energy production of adenosine triphosphate or ATP.[12]
This makes the B-vitamin family vitally essential to optimal energy production.
Also, due to the synergy of B-vitamins it may be recommended to supplement the
entire family. We recommend Jarrow Formulas B-Right B complex for optimal metablolism,
energy production, and performance.
The source of optimal performance, in our quiet and tranquil lives or in our high-speed
driven dynamic lives, lies in the foods we consume. And as 'Food is Medicine', "T.H.E.
Core of Performance" lies in how much we allow our food to be our 'Fuel for Excellence'.
