Calming Children with Sensory Integration Issues

Children with autism may have a difficult time controlling their movements or listening when they are busy looking at something else. Sensory integration therapy helps children with autism combine appropriate movements with input they get from the different senses, thereby calming him and helping him to focus. An occupational therapist can help you design a sensory plan to use with your child a home. Activities may include swinging in a hammock, playing in boxes, deep pressure and weighted activities, crawling through tunnels, balancing on a beam or spinning on the floor.

Visual Cues, Speech And Language

Keep children visually attentive through verbal cues and visual stimulations. From the beginning of life, children are required to be visually attentive. We use joint attention with babies when speaking about the world around them. When we say, “look at the cat,” the child turns towards the object the caregiver has verbally cued, and soon realizes “cat” is the associated word when the object is seen. Using joint attention is the beginning step to speech and language.

Even though we learn our language patterns from caregivers at the beginning of life, some children have difficulty with receptive or expressive language for other reasons. These children might have a communication disorder, a developmental delay or other neurological concerns. While you will easily find many of these students in the regular classroom setting, they may need visual clues or other visual stimulation to help their day be a success.
