Most IT architects are pretty familiar with SIP, but SIP isn't the be-all, end-all for UC interoperability. In addition to SIP and the underlying codecs, IT architects should familiarize themselves with several other UC standards, like XMPP, as they extend UC applications beyond the firewall. XMPP, the granddaddy of all UC protocols, was almost left for dead as a result of the growth of SIP and the complementary SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE) protocol embraced by Microsoft and others, but XMPP has seen a resurgence thanks initially to support from Google and Cisco's acquisition of Jabber. MORE UC RESOURCES MOBILE COLLABORATION: Cloud providers deliver mobile collaboration apps better than on-prem On-prem UC can't keep pace with the evolving mobile device landscape and sub-second latency requirements of mobile collaboration, but cloud UC providers can, says one expert. CLOUD-BASED UC: Federated identity key to SaaS office and hosted UC Federated identity management addresses the security risks associated with identity management while providing users SSO to multiple cloud-based UC services and SaaS office apps. UC AS A SERVICE: Lync Online UCaaS debuts, but some question if it's enterprise-ready UC pros have been edgy about UC as a Service, citing concerns around limited customization and features--and even Microsoft may not change their minds with Lync Online. SIP IN THE CALL CENTER: SIP-based call centers: Unified voice, video & text Enterprises have hesitated to adopt UC call center technology, but social media and the consumerization of IT are putting pressure on traditional voice-centric approaches. MOBILE UC: Users won't plug in tablets, but mobile UC via Wi-Fi still dicey Laptops, tablets and smartphones have evolved into multipurpose mobile UC endpoints, but their preferred access--Wi-Fi--hasn't kept up.
