Rubik's Cube Cake

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 01:10 PM PDT

Sure, you could decorate the exterior of a cubical cake so that it looks like a Rubik’s Cube from the outside, but Vicky McDonald went beyond that goal for her cake in honor of Erno Rubik’s birthday. As you slice her cake, it continues to look like a Rubik’s Cube, with varying interior colors. She provides instructions on how to make one at the link.

After posting this marvelous creation, she received an email from Rubik himself:

Thanks for the nice birthday surprise which sweetens the bitterness of passing time.

In a famous scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Admiral Kirk screamed “Khan!” in rage and despair against his enemy, Khan Noonien Singh. This has become one of the great battlecries of Trekkies everywhere. So, appropriately, William Shatner led 3,000 fans in this call at Comic-Con. Behold its majesty, and tremble.

Why Can't Astronauts Whistle in Space?

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 11:20 AM PDT

Now I’m not talking about whistling in a vacuum. It’s obvious that attempting to do so would fail. But even astronauts on spacewalks in protective suits can’t whistle. Why not? Former astronaut Dan Barry explained:

“You can’t whistle because the air pressure in the suit is only 4.3 [pounds per square inch], and normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi, so there are not enough air molecules blowing by your lips to make a sound,” he said.[...]

Jeff Hoffman, a retired astronaut with three spacewalks (including a mission to repair the Hubble telescope) has traveled 21.5 million miles in space. He said the technicians who trained him on spacewalks had told him that he wouldn’t be able to whistle, but he says he tried anyway.

“I couldn’t get one note out,” he said.

The Saddest Movie in the World

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 09:38 AM PDT

What movies make you cry? When I saw The Champ during its initial theater run, I did not expect to cry, but I did, and so did everyone in the audience. Watching 9-year-old Ricky Schroeder begging his father not to die was just too much. When researchers Robert Levenson and James Gross began looking for a trigger that would ethically induce sadness in volunteer test subjects, they searched for the most sure-fire tear-jerking film ever. It took years, but they found The Champ.

In 1995, Gross and Levenson published the results of their test screenings. They came up with a list of 16 short film clips able to elicit a single emotion, such as anger, fear or surprise. Their recommendation for inducing disgust was a short film showing an amputation. Their top-rated film clip for amusement was the fake orgasm scene from When Harry Met Sally. And then there's the two-minute, 51-second clip of Schroder weeping over his father's dead body in The Champ, which Levenson and Gross found produced more sadness in laboratory subjects than the death of Bambi's mom.

"I still feel sad when I see that boy crying his heart out," Gross says.

Cue the argument for Old Yeller. Excuse me, I think I need a handkerchief. Link -via Metafilter

London's Underground River

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 08:26 AM PDT

The River Fleet in London is a tidal river that once provided water for many industries. Over the years, it became quite polluted, then was consigned to flow underneath the city as London grew, until it was eventually incorporated into the sewer system. But the river is still there, filling its tunnels at high tide and ebbing to a trickle at low tide. Read about what happened to the River Fleet and see plenty of pictures at Kuriositas. Link

Caltech Protest, 1968

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 06:08 AM PDT

Students at Caltech didn’t do much public protesting against the Vietnam War or the draft or the voting age, but on January 6, 1968 they found time to rally for something dear to their hearts.

In what some observers suggest may be the emergence of the college's social conscience, the enraged students voiced opposition to rumored canceling of NBC's science fiction series Star Trek.

"It Is Totally Illogical to Cancel Star Trek," read the sign of one bespectacled protester…

A nationwide campaign kept the series on TV for one more year. Link -via Buzzfeed
