| Posted: 30 Jul 2011 05:15 AM PDT Looking to break the world’s record for most complex dot-to-dot drawing, Thomas Pavitte created a poster-sized image of the Mona Lisa with 6,239 dots! It took him over nine hours to connect all the dots which he captured on this time-lapse video. The entire project can be seen at Pavitte’s Behance page. Link -via This is Colossal |
| Golden Textile Made From Spiders Silk Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:24 AM PDT There’s an amazing collaboration between man and insect on display at the Art Institute of Chicago, a cloth woven purely from the silk of over a million Golden Orb spiders. This magnificent textile, naturally golden in color and seemingly imbued with it’s own luminescence, took over four years to make after eighty gatherers spent five years gathering the silk. Such a feat has not been attempted since 1900, when a spider silk textile that disintegrated over time was created for the Paris Exposition Universelle, and it’s not surprising that such a feat is almost never attempted, for the spiders with the best silk can only be found in Madagascar. But is all the effort really worth it for a piece of cloth that isn’t long for this world? Link Image via John Brown |
| Beautiful Clockwork Puppets From Japan Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:09 AM PDT These mechanical marvels are examples of Karakuri, centuries old puppets from Japan that can perform simple tasks powered only by clockwork mechanisms. Their lifelike movements and beautiful look make them breathtaking to behold in action, especially considering they were made hundreds of years ago. A short video accompanies the article on Laughing Squid, showing one of the last remaining Karakuri builders in action. I’m off to build an army of puppet archers to defend my house! |
| Agatha Christie And The Endless Summer Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:37 AM PDT Believe it or not, the First Lady of mystery and the Big Kahuna had something in common-they were both innovators in the sport of surfing! Agatha Christie, as it turns out, was one of the first Britons to stand up on a surfboard, and she sharpened her wave riding skills in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii as early as 1922. Oh what a sight she must have been braving the waves of Waikiki! |
| FLYPmode-The First Crowdsourced Military Vehicle Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:11 AM PDT Behold, the first military vehicle created via crowdsourced design! Called the FLYPmode, it was developed in part by an ex-marine, who knows what advancements need to be made to help save lives on the modern battlefield. Built to withstand explosive blasts, the likes of which account for most of the recent deaths in the Middle East, FLYPmode was made in less than four months and represents the future of military tech: innovative vehicle designs that can be built quickly with modern combat needs in mind. If you’re interested, you can see the fascinating designs that led to this concept vehicle at the Local Motors link below. Will bloated defense budgets become a thing of the past, when we design the vehicles of the future for ourselves? Link Image via Local Motors. |
| Fight Nazi Dinosaurs For Free, All Weekend Long Posted: 30 Jul 2011 01:48 AM PDT Dino D-Day wants to show you what the hype is all about by letting you play for free until July 31st on Steam. The indie game has received lots of buzz over the last few months, not only because of its humorous subject matter (Nazi controlled dinosaurs), but also because the gameplay is fast paced and fun, and the graphics are quite good for such a low budget game. Now you have a chance to check it out for yourself and see if slaying Nazi dinosaurs satisfies your craving for virtual blood. |
| Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:48 AM PDT 3d printing is such a new process that we are still discovering all the ways in which we can use it to enhance our lives. Well, the wait for the next big thing to print is over, because engineers from the UK have used the 3d printer to create an aircraft capable of flight. Made up of printed plates which are snapped together, this impressive little flying machine is capable of speeds up to 100 mph and cruises almost silently through the air. It might just be the coolest snap together model kit ever! Link Image via University of Southampton |
| Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:46 AM PDT Now that I’ve posted up all my Comic Con costume articles here and on Rue The Day, I’ve finally started looking the other photo galleries. While I’ve seen a few good ones here and there , I really didn’t feel like I missed anything major until I saw this adorable Dalek costume. If only it were possible to survey all of the convention at once. Link Via Geeks Are Sexy |
| 32 Cool Artworks Made From Currencies Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:36 AM PDT We’ve all seen the occasional origami made from dollar bills, but those have nothing on these 32 amazing artworks made from currencies around the world. Personally, I like the carved sculptures like the one in the top center of the photo montage above. |
| Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:27 AM PDT I think the craziest road I ever drove on was the one lane, ocean-side freeway that hangs over California’s cliffs on the Coast Highway 101. While that got a little intense at parts, it was nothing compared to the terrifying roads seen in this Mental Floss article. |
| Futurama's Head-In-A-Jar Creator Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:21 AM PDT Every now and then a new app comes out that makes me wish I owned an iPhone and right now, Comedy Central’s new Head-In-A-Jar app has me really feeling that way. You can not only create a personalized head of yourself, you can make one of all of your friends and coworkers to set up your own head museum. Link Via Laughing Squid |
| 7 Wonderfully Creepy Gaming Easter Eggs Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:02 AM PDT Did you know the statue of liberty in GTA IV has a secret beating heart held up by chains on the inside? And that there’s apparently no reason for it? Cracked has all kinds of cool video game Easter eggs in this great article. |
| Posted: 29 Jul 2011 09:31 PM PDT Well, these items are not actually made out of marshmallows–it just seems like it. Austrian artist Erwin Wurm has created an exhibit called “Wear Me Out” featuring items that people occupy such as sweaters, homes and odd Peep-looking… things (Peep/Human hybrids?) I’m not sure, but that may be the childhood home of the Stay-Puft marshmallow man. The installation is currently being featured on Design Boom and on display in Antwerp at the Middelheim Museum. |
| Posted: 29 Jul 2011 08:35 PM PDT Well it makes sense, doesn’t it! Love the shield. Design by Ben Chen. Check out all of his pop art in his incredible Flickr feed, including plumbers in the 1930’s featuring Mario and Luigi and cutie-pie designs with knitting pandas and a Darth Vader goose–yeah, you read that right–laying a Death Star egg. |
| Posted: 29 Jul 2011 08:33 PM PDT Obviously, I’m rapidly becoming a fan of Thomas Pavitte. Here is his tribute to the inventor of the matchstick, John Walker. Over a series of months, Pavitte created this typographical sculpture using 10,000 friction matches. I had no idea, but Walker invented the matchstick by accident–a fact that fascinated Pavitte.

As part of a series called Shining Light on Cancer, health photographer David Schlaich captures light paintings to illustrate the feelings of cancer patients. The series is for a book of light art images to help raise money for cancer charities.

Craftster member megstar made an embroidery hoop that flips to reveal a second page. The pages can be held in place with snaps. Her work is a reference to the Doctor Who episode “Blink“. Whovians have told me to watch that one episode if I want to get a sense of the value of the series. Link -via Craft |

CDEFGABC from Lernert & Sander on Vimeo. Lernert and Sander are two Dutch artists that decided “working alone was getting boring.” They produce and write commercials, art movies and documentaries. They made this video using a dual glass harmonica for a short using pop music. I have to admit — part of me wished that they were going to play Nyan Cat on such colorful cups — ingenious way of keeping track of which glass is what note! About the project, the artists say:

| Woman Takes Bar Exam While in Labor, Delivers Baby Right After Posted: 29 Jul 2011 11:07 AM PDT The bar exam was inconveniently scheduled, but a Northwestern Law alumna sucked it up to ensure that she was admitted to the Illinois bar. She was in active labor during the exam and gave birth two hours after completing it:

| Posted: 29 Jul 2011 10:46 AM PDT redditor i_luv_ur_mom says “My math teacher is REALLY cool.” Just as the Fibonacci sequence occurs in nature, so does math in the form of the Batman Equation occur in comics. | Posted: 29 Jul 2011 10:37 AM PDT Paper quilling involves “the coiling and shaping of narrow paper strips to create a design.” Susan Myers has been developing this skill for a while and decided to recreate Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It’s a good choice, as the medium seems to lend itself well to curves of the original. Link -via Dude Craft |

One guy in Massachusetts seems to be so devoted to hot dogs that in celebration of National Hot Dog Month (yes seriously there is a National Hot Dog Month) he is doing just that.

| Posted: 29 Jul 2011 09:27 AM PDT The movie Cowboys & Aliens opens nationwide today, marking Harrison Ford’s 40th credited movie role. In honor of the occasion, the National Post created 40 icons of Ford in his roles (although strangely all appearing to be the same age). Each is linked to an explanation of the role depicted.
