Looking to break the world’s record for most complex dot-to-dot drawing, Thomas Pavitte created a poster-sized image of the Mona Lisa with 6,239 dots!  It took him over nine hours to connect all the dots which he captured on this time-lapse video. The entire project can be seen at Pavitte’s Behance page.

Golden Textile Made From Spiders Silk

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:24 AM PDT

There’s an amazing collaboration between man and insect on display at the Art Institute of Chicago, a cloth woven purely from the silk of over a million Golden Orb spiders. This magnificent textile, naturally golden in color and seemingly imbued with it’s own luminescence, took over four years to make after eighty gatherers spent five years gathering the silk. Such a feat has not been attempted since 1900, when a spider silk textile that disintegrated over time was created for the Paris Exposition Universelle, and it’s not surprising that such a feat is almost never attempted, for the spiders with the best silk can only be found in Madagascar. But is all the effort really worth it for a piece of cloth that isn’t long for this world?

Beautiful Clockwork Puppets From Japan

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:09 AM PDT

These mechanical marvels are examples of Karakuri, centuries old puppets from Japan that can perform simple tasks powered only by clockwork mechanisms. Their lifelike movements and beautiful look make them breathtaking to behold in action, especially considering they were made hundreds of years ago. A short video accompanies the article on Laughing Squid, showing one of the last remaining Karakuri builders in action. I’m off to build an army of puppet archers to defend my house!

Agatha Christie And The Endless Summer

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:37 AM PDT

Believe it or not, the First Lady of mystery and the Big Kahuna had something in common-they were both innovators in the sport of surfing! Agatha Christie, as it turns out, was one of the first Britons to stand up on a surfboard, and she sharpened her wave riding skills in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii as early as 1922. Oh what a sight she must have been braving the waves of Waikiki!

FLYPmode-The First Crowdsourced Military Vehicle

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Behold, the first military vehicle created via crowdsourced design! Called the FLYPmode, it was developed in part by an ex-marine, who knows what advancements need to be made to help save lives on the modern battlefield. Built to withstand explosive blasts, the likes of which account for most of the recent deaths in the Middle East, FLYPmode was made in less than four months and represents the future of military tech: innovative vehicle designs that can be built quickly with modern combat needs in mind. If you’re interested, you can see the fascinating designs that led to this concept vehicle at the Local Motors link below. Will bloated defense budgets become a thing of the past, when we design the vehicles of the future for ourselves?

Now you have a chance to check it out for yourself and see if slaying Nazi dinosaurs satisfies your craving for virtual blood.

The First 3D Printed Aircraft

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:48 AM PDT

3d printing is such a new process that we are still discovering all the ways in which we can use it to enhance our lives. Well, the wait for the next big thing to print is over, because engineers from the UK have used the 3d printer to create an aircraft capable of flight. Made up of printed plates which are snapped together, this impressive little flying machine is capable of speeds up to 100 mph and cruises almost silently through the air. It might just be the coolest snap together model kit ever!

The Cutest Dalek Ever

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:46 AM PDT

Now that I’ve posted up all my Comic Con costume articles here and on Rue The Day, I’ve finally started looking the other photo galleries. While I’ve seen a few good ones here and there , I really didn’t feel like I missed anything major until I saw this adorable Dalek costume. If only it were possible to survey all of the convention at once.

The World's Craziest Roads

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 12:27 AM PDT

I think the craziest road I ever drove on was the one lane, ocean-side freeway that hangs over California’s cliffs on the Coast Highway 101. While that got a little intense at parts, it was nothing compared to the terrifying roads seen in this Mental Floss article.

Erwin Wurm's Marshmallow Art

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 09:31 PM PDT

Well, these items are not actually made out of marshmallows–it just seems like it. Austrian artist Erwin Wurm has created an exhibit called “Wear Me Out” featuring items that people occupy such as sweaters, homes and odd Peep-looking… things (Peep/Human hybrids?) I’m not sure, but that may be the childhood home of the Stay-Puft marshmallow man. The installation is currently being featured on Design Boom and on display in Antwerp at the Middelheim Museum.

John Walker Tribute

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 08:33 PM PDT

Obviously, I’m rapidly becoming a fan of Thomas Pavitte. Here is his tribute to the inventor of the matchstick, John Walker. Over a series of months, Pavitte created this typographical sculpture using 10,000 friction matches. I had no idea, but Walker invented the matchstick by accident–a fact that fascinated Pavitte.

While Walker was preparing a lighting mixture on one occasion, a match which had been dipped in it took fire by an accidental friction upon the hearth. He at once appreciated the practical value of the discovery, and started making friction matches. They consisted of wooden splints or sticks of cardboard coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum, the sulphur serving to communicate the flame to the wood.

Cancer, depression, or any sort of ailment can make you feel terribly isolated. As part of a series called Shining Light on Cancer, health photographer David Schlaich captures light paintings to illustrate the feelings of cancer patients. The series is for a book of light art images to help raise money for cancer charities.

"It can feel isolating to feel like no one knows how you feel. But when you go to a cancer support group and some groups you may find fit you better than others, you can find a community of people that can relate and a friend who knows how you feel. Of course this can apply to all kinds of problems, depression, addiction there's lots of people out there who know how you feel. You don't have to be alone if you find them".

Why Are There Hundreds of Ancient Tunnels in Bavaria?

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:29 PM PDT

Why are there secret ancient underground chambers and tunnels connecting old farmhouses, churches and even cemeteries and forests in Bavaria, Germany? Nobody knows - even the experts are baffled:

The vaults could not have served a practical purpose, as dwellings or to store food, for example, if only because the tunnels are so inconveniently narrow in places. Besides, some fill up with water in the winter. Also, the lack of evidence of feces indicates that they were not used to house livestock.

There is not a single written record of the construction of an Erdstall dating from the medieval period. "The tunnels were completely hushed up," says Ahlborn.

Archeologists have also been surprised to find that the tunnels are almost completely empty and appear to be swept clean, as if they were abodes for the spirits. One gallery contained an iron plowshare, while heavy millstones were found in three others. Virtually nothing else has turned up in the vaults.

There's one thing they do know: there are hundreds of these secret underground mazes all over Germany and Austria.

Glass Harmonica Duet

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:12 PM PDT

CDEFGABC from Lernert & Sander on Vimeo.

Lernert and Sander are two Dutch artists that decided “working alone was getting boring.” They produce and write commercials, art movies and documentaries. They made this video using a dual glass harmonica for a short using pop music.  I have to admit — part of me wished that they were going to play Nyan Cat on such colorful cups — ingenious way of keeping track of which glass is what note!

About the project, the artists say:

Commit and dedicate yourself to even the most stupid ideas that come to mind.We built a duo glass harp and learned to play this 18th-century music instrumentin less than 8 weeks. Instead of a classical piece or suchlike, we have chosen the classic20th-century pop song 'No limit' by 2unlimited — easily the worst song ever!

Woman Takes Bar Exam While in Labor, Delivers Baby Right After

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 11:07 AM PDT

The bar exam was inconveniently scheduled, but a Northwestern Law alumna sucked it up to ensure that she was admitted to the Illinois bar. She was in active labor during the exam and gave birth two hours after completing it:

Before the start of the afternoon session on day two (Wednesday) of the Illinois bar exam, the very pregnant MBE mentioned to the proctors the possibility that she might give birth during the test. She asked if she could leave early in the event that she went into labor; they agreed.

So Mother Bar Exam sat down for the afternoon session of the Multistate Bar Exam ("MBE"). Not long after, she started going into labor — not a little discomfort, but full-on labor.[...]

Upon completing the exam, Mother Bar Exam notified the proctors that she was done and needed to leave, seeing as she was, you know, in the middle of giving birth and all. Normally candidates are not allowed to leave the room early, but in this case the proctors accommodated her (especially since she had mentioned the issue to them beforehand).

One proctor was even nice enough to carry MBE's bag as she walked over to Prentice Women's Hospital at Northwestern — conveniently located across the street from the testing site. Shortly before 6 p.m., Mother Bar Exam gave birth to a healthy baby boy, via Caesarean section.

The Batman Formula

Paper Quilled Starry Night

Paper quilling involves “the coiling and shaping of narrow paper strips to create a design.” Susan Myers has been developing this skill for a while and decided to recreate Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It’s a good choice, as the medium seems to lend itself well to curves of the original. Link -via Dude Craft

Cremated Ashes Packed into Ammunition

If you’d like to go out with a bang, Holy Smoke LLC offers to pack your cremated ashes (or those of your loved ones) into ammunition cartridges. You tell them the caliber or gauge, ship the remains to them, and they’ll load the cartridges:

Once the caliber, gauge and other ammunition parameters have been selected, we will ask you (by way of your funeral service provider) to send approximately one pound of the decedant’s ash to us. Upon receiving the ashes our professional and reverant staff will place a measured portion of ash into each shotshell or cartridge.[...]

Our return shipment to the sender will be the finished ammunition, boxed in available labeled ammunition boxes. We also offer mantle-worthy wooden carriers with engraved name plates. Your return shipment will also include any unused ash in a separate, labeled container.

Man Eating a Hot Dog a Day For 31 Days

Rob Merlino, 47, of Natick, said he is celebrating July’s National Hot Dog Month by having one hot dog for lunch each day during the month, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.
