Greetings!
We're so glad you joined us for this issue of Operation PAL News, and we're grateful
for your involvement in this important outreach program.

We hope you are having a wonderful summer and staying cool while keeping all of
our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers. As hot as it is here in
the states, it's considerably hotter over in Afghanistan, so send cool thoughts
to our deployed troops!

While you are writing cards and letters to our wounded, don't forget to get on your
computer and phone to Vote Purple for our wounded warriors! Two votes a day (online
and via text message) will help Purple Heart Family Support win a $25,000 grant
to support the warriors and their families.

Vote online at www.RefreshEverything.com/PurpleHeart [http://www.refresheverything.com/purpleheart]
and by text message. Send the number 107451 in the message body to Pepsi (73774).

Thank you for your incredible support of our troops!

Semper Family,

Barbara Gemmell

LCpl. Michael 3/5
Participant Highlight
Michael came to OperationPAL as a member of "DarkHorse," the 3/5 Marines whose tour
of duty in Afghanistan endured significant losses and injuries. "Spider," as Michael
is known, was injured last December by an explosive device that left large shrapnel
in his back and mangled one of his arms. As his treatment progressed he became faced
with a decision: keep trying to rehabilitate the arm, or have it amputated. After
much deliberation regarding years of rehab with little chance of functionality,
and talking with those who had made different choices, he chose to have it amputated.
He has been moving forward ever since. His Mom allowed us to show some photos of
what the physical therapy and rehabilitation programs consist of. They provide
our healing heroes with a longer list of things they CAN do versus what they can
no longer do, and they give them the confidence to try anything. "Can't" is not
in their vocabulary.
Recently Michael was granted a few weeks recuperative leave and is enjoying some
quality time with family and friends. There is a photo of his little brother and
big sister back together again for the first time since December when he was first
transported back to the States. He's home in time to help her out and then will
be off to New Mexico for a long weekend, including getting Grandpa and Grandma set
up for the summer where they can hopefully stay cool, and maybe get to throw in
a few adventures.

Where Are They Now?
Update on HM3 "Doc" Anthony
Dad says Anthony is getting around just fine with his prosthetic leg, and thanks
again to everyone for being so kind to write. Even though we are no longer sending
cards, you are fondly remembered for sending notes of encouragement when Anthony's
family really needed it.
