T.H.E. Osteo Truth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROBERT REPORTS
To prevent osteoporosis it was once thought that calcium was the answer in the war
against bone loss called osteoperosis. While calcium is well-known as a bone builder,
you might not be aware that without sufficient vitamin B12, vitamin K, and vitamin
D, osteoporosis cannot be eliminated. The science linking vitamin K, D, and B12
to optimal bone health has shown that they all influence the secondary modification
of osteocalcin. This is the protein needed to bind calcium to the bone matrix, which
is the intercellular substance or glue of our bones.[1] The fact is without these
nutrients maximum bone density may not be possible.
A healthy bone matrix and thereby healthy bones require that each of the essential
minerals we consume optimally function properly in concert with other minerals,
particularly a naturally wide range of trace minerals. This extremely important
point goes to the heart of the inherent problem with most processed foods, they
have very little mineral content. This may be due to the current food processing
techniques. By eliminating, or 'processing out of', most of the naturally occurring
trace minerals in our food, not only are our diets often missing those minerals
themselves, but their absence has a critically detrimental impact on our capacity
to absorb and make use of many of the other minerals that are in fact present in
our diets. For example, vitamin K and its constituent protein S, improve bone density
and reduce the risk of bone loss.[2] Vitamin B-12 has shown to have similar effects
on bone density when found deficient in the body. Calcium absorption is actually
controlled and regulated by vitamin D and the parathyroid hormones.[3] Without
vitamin D and a healthy functioning parathyroid gland we cannot actively transport
calcium through the digestive system. The endocrine system and other key hormones
are vital factors of calcium's utilization.[4] Furthermore, high blood plasma level
of vitamin D enhances calcium absorption, whereas high sodium, protein, alcohol
and caffeine intakes will cause increased urinary losses and negative calcium balance.
Osteoporosis can be attributed to many factors including hormonal or endocrine imbalances,
diet or metabolic deficiencies, and environmental or mechanical factors. However,
emerging clinical evidence suggests that inflammation also exerts significant influence
on bone turnover and osteoporosis. Numerous pro-inflammatory cytokines have been
implicated in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. These cytokines may
control the breakdown and construction of our bone. Chronic inflammation is a characteristic
of aging as well as its association with the development of arthritis and osteoporosis.[5]
Clinical research indicates that natural anti-inflammatories in the diet like the
essential fatty acids (EFA's) found in cold water fish, as well as some fruit, vegetables
and herbs, can be highly effective in reducing inflammation and bone deterioration.
Specifically, the consumption of turmeric, ginger, rosemary and oregano have shown
some of the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties researched.[6]
First and foremost we recommend healthy fats to support healthy inflammation. We
recommend Omega Swirl from Barlean's Organic Oils. This is a blend of Omega's 3,
6, and 9, which are known to be critical fats to support healthy inflammation and
bone density.
Vitamin D also plays a huge role in the inflammatory immune system. Low vitamin
D levels is associated with autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.[7]
We recommend one of the best bone supporting formulas that we know of Jarrow Formulas'
Bone-up. This formulation utilizes an especially natural source of calcium called
hydroxyapatite, which is actually a real component of our bones. Bone-Up is then
combined with a host of supporting vitamins and minerals, like vitamin D, K, and
B-12, known to support the bone matrix and bone density. Furthermore, the results
of a clinical trial investigating the effects of Bone-Up on young women in the Journal
of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine, has shown that exercise combined with using
Jarrow Formulas' Bone-up can improve bone health in young adult women. The assertion
is that increased bone health at a younger age can lower the risk of developing
osteoporosis later in life.[8] Never the less the diet is a primary factor to improve
and reduce the risk of further bone loss.
The demineralization of bone can be confused with loss of whole bone mass or tissue.
The term osteoporosis refers to a loss of total bone mass and not just bone thinning
due to calcium deficiency. Supporting minerals such as phosphorus and manganese
are also essential to the formation of the bone matrix, and must be considered in
the overall nutrient equation.[9] This is why we stress the importance of optimal
dietary mineral intake. We believe that nature's naturally organic vegetables contains
the essence of life, and that is the minerals of the Earth. We also recommend the
supplementation of key minerals that support the bone matrix, so vital to healthy
bones. We prefer and recommend Jarrow Formulas' Mineral Balance because it delivers
the highest qulality minerals available anywhere.
The relationship between bone loss and blood acidity is an emerging area of research.
As women in general tend to eat less animal protein then men, similar to the overall
trends with vegetarians at large, we have seen for some time this correlation between
the difference in diet specifically in terms of lower blood acidity and a lower
rate of bone loss over time. The pH theory holds that when food is metabolized and
broken down in the body it leaves certain residues which yield either alkaline or
acidic potentials of pH. Diets high in protein have been shown to be acidic. Consequently,
the body uses calcium to buffer the rising acidity in the blood. If calcium is found
to be low in the diet or blood, the bones will suffer. Calcium and other elements
in short supply can be borrowed from the bone to achieve this balance. The result
is loss in bone density. Vegetarians not only have less acid produced during digestion,
but vegetables and fruit additionally metabolize into potassium bicarbonate, which
further helps to offset the imbalance.[10] We highly recommend testing your blood
pH often if you suspect bone loss or if bone pain is becoming more prevalent. We
also recommend the consumption of additional greens in the diet to support this
positive ph for bone density. One easy way to get optimal levels of healthy greens
each day is with blended green drink. We highly recommend 100% organic Vibrant Healths'
Field of Greens. This product is considered raw due to its freeze dried processing
method for optimal quality.
The osteo truth is found in the density of our diets which are rich in nutrients
of the Earth.
