It's Been One Year Since the FDA Started the Final Approval of Genetically Engineered Salmon

Ask Your Senators to Block GE Salmon, and Make Sure the FDA Doesn't Sneak Through an Approval While Congress is Out!

The US House of Represesentatives Blocked the Approval of Genetically Engineered Salmon!

Now, Take Action to Make Sure the Senate Blocks GE Salmon Too!

August 26, 2011

Dear Indiana,

One year ago, the FDA started a final push to approve genetically engineered salmon. With your help we submitted an overwhelming number of public comments opposing this approval, and have stopped them from approving it so far. But with Congress on recess, we need to keep up the pressure so they don't sneak through an approval. Take action now to ask the FDA and your senators to stop the approval of genetically engineered salmon.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. House of Representatives barred the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from approving genetically engineered (GE) salmon. This was a great victory, but this block on spending federal money to approve GE Salmon could cause the FDA to try to push this approval through before the final bill is passed. Now is the most important time for us to keep the pressure on and let them know that we're still watching. Urge the FDA and your senators to stop the approval of GE salmon.

The House passed a measure as part of the 2012 budget that removes all funding from the Food and Drug Administration for approving GE Salmon. This is what we've been fighting for, and it
's good news since U.S. food agencies don't have a way to fully evaluate the impacts of GE salmon on human health or the environment. But, now the Senate needs to pass the same measure. Your senators need to hear from you about GE Salmon and, at the same time, we need to make sure the FDA doesn't try to pull a fast one before Congress returns.

GE salmon was found by the FDA to contain elevated levels of IGF-1, a cancer-causing hormone. Despite this, the FDA has been trying to approve GE salmon for human consumption. Over 100,000 supporters like you have taken action to prevent the approval of GE salmon! The fact that GE Salmon hasn't been approved yet is due in large part to the overwhelming public opposition to GE salmon.

Please urge your U.S. senators to do the right thing. Block the FDA from approving GE salmon and let the FDA know we're not letting up until GE Salmon is banned.

Take action:
