Unfortunately for John Quincy Adams, son of John Adams, his election to the presidency was tainted by the Corrupt Bargain. Backers of Andrew Jackson, his opponent in the election of 1824, claimed that Henry Clay made a deal with John Quincy Adams that if he helped make Adams win when the election went to the House of Representatives, then Adams would reward him by appointing him Secretary of State.
