Thrillist's Guide to the SD Film Festival
A clear path through the movie madness
Because movies are the best places to take dates you don't want to talk to don't just have to be mindless excursions into pretty colors voiced by Zoe Saldana, the San Diego Film Festival is celebrating a decade of thought-provoking and meaningful cinema with five days of screenings and five nights of "posh-partying", which's totally excusable since Beckham banged that nanny. To prevent inevitable indecision, here's the breakdown:
Live the (Kind of Weird and Sad) Dream: East Fifth Bliss: Dexter takes some time off from murdering people to grow a scraggly beard, move in with his pops, bang Lucy Liu, and date the daughter of one of his high school friends.
Seem Sane and Cool By Comparison: The Extraordinary Fight of Atticus Walker and the Monster in His Mind: Follow the epic battle between a fledgling writer and the giant dopey-looking green dragon in his head, which, at the time he wrote this, the screenwriter just may've been chasing.
Impress Chrissy Russo: Coriolanus: Assuming you can verbalize the title without hysterically giggling, this flick has everything needed to get a lady primed for action including lofty Shakespearean dialogue, loads of tragedy, and, above all, Gerard Butler. Me-ow.
Get Super High: The Highest Pass: Shockingly not about a dude who keeps trying to switch lanes at very high altitudes, this documentary follows a group of multinational Hindus on a motorcycle ride through the Himalayas on the world's highest road...so actually, maybe it is about that.
Openly Ridicule, Secretly Take Notes: Superheroes: Because they really do exist (!), step into the lives of real people whose alter-egos cruise the streets in search of crime, or failing that, women who will look at them.
Get Aggressively Not-Laid: The Pill: Follow the extremely urgent journey of a dude who just found out his one-night-stand isn't on birth control, and is desperate to not have a baby. Hmmm. Or maybe don't see this one.
Trick People From Fallbrook: White Knight: What happens when a KKK Grand Dragon gets locked up with a Mexican field worker? Actually, tons of funny stuff, because Tom Sizemore and Hector Jimenez are in it!
