5 Habits of Highly Effective Outlaws

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:05 AM PST

"Black Bart" Boles

Guns? Check. Masks? Check. Poetry book? If you’re going to rob a stagecoach, here’s how to do it with flair.

If You’re A Poet, Show It

Even if you’re a no-good, law-flouting bandit, it pays to mind your manners -and your meter. In California, between 1875 and 1883, Charles E. “Black Bart” Boles held up more than two dozen Wells Fargo stagecoaches. Even though he seemed to have an intense private grudge against the bank, he was always polite to its employees, asking stage drivers to “please” throw down the money. Stranger still, Boles often left poetry at his crime scenes. This poem was his most well-known:

I’ve labored long
and hard for bread,
For honor and for riches,
But on my corns
too long you’ve tread,
You fine-haired sons of bitches.

In 1883, Boles was wounded during a holdup and accidentally left a handkerchief at the crime scene. When Wells Fargo detectives traced it back to him, he was arrested and imprisoned, and although Boles’ career as a robber was over, his literary influence was just beginning. During his imprisonment, several copycat stagecoach robbers left truly dreadful bits of poetry at the scenes of their crimes.

Spin the Media

Jesse James and his One-armed Mother

Jesse James spent as much time honing his public image as he did robbing people. In fact, James frequently wrote letters to newspapers, stressing that his gang never attacked innocent farmers, only corrupt banks and railroad companies. He also claimed lawmen hounded James and his brothers because they had been Confederate soldiers, which won the gang sympathy in the South. His letters were widely reprinted, even in The New York Times, helping turn the Missouri bandits into national legends.

One night in 1875, Pinkerton detectives threw a flare into the James family home. The agents were trying to light up the dark house so they could shoot at the outlaws, but the flare exploded in the fireplace, killing Jesse’s young half-brother and maiming his mother, who lost her right forearm. James made the incident seem even worse than it was in his letters to the press, falsely claiming the detectives had tossed a 32-pound military shell into his mother’s home. The public was horrified, and after the explosion, Pinkerton agents received little help from Jesse’s neighbors, who were often happy to provide the James gang with food, information, and hiding places.

Rob Smarter, Not Harder

A stagecoach at Yellowstone National Park

In the early 1900s, automobiles were starting to replace stagecoaches, which meant that stagecoach robbers were a dying breed. One of the last havens for the bandits was Yellowstone National Park, because the park didn’t allow motor vehicles. On the lonely, isolated trails, robbers could loot stagecoaches with remarkable efficiency.  On July 29, 1914, an ex-con named Ed Trafton chose a spot about eight miles from Old Faithful geyser, where there was only one route for stagecoaches. With the aid of an armed accomplice who kept his victims from turning around to get help, Trafton held up 15 coaches, one by one, as though he were operating a drive-through bank.

Get in Touch with Your Feminine Side

During the 17th century, English highwayman Tom Rowland menaced coach travelers with a string of holdups that lasted for 18 years, and the entire time, he was dressed like a lady. Did he put on women’s clothing as a disguise, or was it a fetish? Difficult to be sure, but Rowland worked hard to keep up the charade, even riding sidesaddle when getting away from crime scenes. Caught and convicted in 1699, Rowland was hanged at Tyburn Hill, the historic place of execution for London-area criminals. The law was strict, but jail regulations were not; Rowland spent his final morning dallying with a London prostitute, purportedly dressed as a man.

The body of Bill Brazelton, still wearing his mask.

Wait for the Other Shoe to Drop

Arizona stagecoach robber Bill Brazelton threw lawmen off his trail with a cunning horseshoe trick. Before committing a crime, he would place shoes on his horse normally, then once he’d stolen the goods, he’d quickly turn the shoes around. After he rode off, it would look as though there were two sets of tracks leading to the crime scene, but no tracks leading away.

Brazelton’s scheme worked until one day in 1878, when one horseshoe fell off his steed after a robbery. The horse left behind a bizarre set of tracks, with three shod hooves running in one direction, and one bare hoof running in the other. A suspicious tracker traced the odd hoofprints to a corral near Tucson, where a posse laid an ambush for Brazelton, and he was killed in the attack. That thing about the horseshoe being lucky? Not so much.

Yoda And Darth Maul Battle It Out For Lipton Brisk

Continuing the parade of “dear god, make it stop!” inducing advertising for The Phantom Menace in 3D, a new animated commercial has emerged for Lipton Brisk Iced Tea that, I must admit, is beautifully animated and very cute.

There’s even a mobile app centered around the battle between Yoda and Darth Maul, which you can check out here.  Now, why do I have the feeling that these ads are going to look a whole lot better than a 3d converted version of The Phantom Menace?

Let’s Play Ancient Greek Punishment

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 08:10 PM PST

Ever wondered what it would have been like to endure a raven pecking out your liver, or pushing a rock up a hill and never reaching the top, like a punishment fit for a Greek from the age of myth?

Well, here’s your chance to get in on the fun, with these simple, cleverly designed pixel art video games by artist Pippin Barr. Choose from: Sisyphus, Tantalus, Prometheus, Danaids or Zeno, and prepare to be entertained for a few moments by the sheer hilarity of it all.

The games look like they’re straight from the Atari 2600, full of charm, strange shaped figures and jagged edges, and believe you me pushing two buttons over and over again can be quite exhausting!

I don’t know about any of you, but to me, David Tennant was the best doctor ever and the cast and crew that worked on the show during his reign were also some of the best the show has ever seen. That’s why I simply adore this great video showing everyone who helped work on the show singing The Proclaimers at the close of his last filming session.

The Cutest New Years Babies Ever

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 06:32 PM PST

New Year’s babies are considered to be good luck, but when you’re as adorable as these baby leopard tortoises, you certainly don’t need to worry about luck. These little cuties were born at the Zoo Pragu, three on New Year’s Eve and three after midnight on New Year’s Day. While they’re tiny enough to fit all six in one woman’s hand right now, they won’t be for long…these guys will grow to up to 120 pounds each. At least their keepers will have plenty of photos to remember them in their infancy.

Spider-Man Themed Bathroom

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 05:10 PM PST

We’ve all been in a situation when a bathroom experience would only be enhanced if there were realistic representations of supervillains trying to break through the wall and kill us. Probably daily. So rileyreplicas, a forum user at The PF, made one for a friend’s husband. The site is currently down, so I can make no guarantee about what you’ll find at the link. But you can also visit Geekologie to see more pictures. That’s a good idea, because this one photo doesn’t do justice to the extensive modifications to the entire bathroom.

Strategic Homelessness

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 04:25 PM PST

A law student at Yeshiva University in New York City who goes by the pseudonym “David” weighed his options carefully. If he timed his use of university and gym facilities just right, could he go through a semester without actually living anywhere? That is, could he be effectively homeless without misery? David decided to try it. The Observer, a student newspaper at Yeshiva, interviewed him about the experience:

The way that it’s working out is I have a gym membership, NY Health and Racquet club, and there’s one right around the corner from Cardozo and that’s my home base. The organization is probably the hard part about this. So I have four lockers and NY Health and Racquet club has showers and I shave there. It has shampoo and soap and all that stuff. [...]

So I have one locker for running clothes and laundry, one for dress shirts, one for dress pants and one for miscellaneous things. And also each locker has a spot for shoes at the top so that’s really good.

I had to really reduce the amount of stuff that I had. I had to get rid of everything that’s nonessential. I only have, like, five dress shirts, five dress pants, some running clothes that are necessary and then obviously sweatshirts and stuff. Other than clothes I don’t really have a lot of stuff, just stuff for shaving and brushing my teeth and books. I have a school locker too, so that helps.

I also have access to my school. Its open until midnight and then opens again at 8 a.m. so I nap there a lot. There’s this one room in the library that has couches and I nap there during the day when I have breaks in between classes. At night I try and stay in there as late as possible so I can get the maximum amount of warmth. So I’ll leave there at midnight and go find a spot and then NY Health and Racquet club opens at six. So I really only have six hours outside, so its not unbearable.

The World’s Most Expensive Tuna

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 11:15 AM PST

How much would you pay for a piece of really fresh sushi? A sushi restaurant has just bought what is the world's most expensive fish: $736,000 for a bluefin tuna caught off the coast of Japan.

The winning bidder, Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co., which operates the Sushi-Zanmai restaurant chain, said he wanted to give Japan a boost after last year's devastating tsunami.
The fish was divided into 10,000 pieces and sold off at ordinary prices, The Daily Telegraph reported.

"Japan has been through a lot the last year due to the disaster," a beaming Kimura told AP Television News. "Japan needs to hang in there. So I tried hard myself and ended up buying the most expensive one."

Obama on Mars?

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:34 AM PST

Danger Room tells us of a claim made by Andrew D. Basiago and William Stillings, a pair of self-proclaimed time-traveling government agents, that President Obama was part of a CIA mission to explore Mars beginning in 1980. They say he was teleported to the red planet.

Obama wasn't the only one making the otherworldly voyage. As "Barry Soetero," the 19-year-old Obama was one of 10 youths selected to secretly teleport to and from Mars, forming a band of interplanetary Teen Titans. Regina Dugan, the director of Darpa, was another member.

Between 1981 and 1983, Obama is supposed to have visited Mars twice, by way of a teleportation chamber called a "jump room." Basiago, a fellow chrononaut, told the website Exopolitics that he saw Obama "walk back to the jump room from across the Martian terrain." To acknowledge his comrade, Obama is said to have told Basiago, "We're here" — apparently, "with some sense of fatalism."

It is not known what exactly Obama did on Mars. (Socializing Martian health care, perhaps? Building a birth-certificate printing press?) His mission was a perilous one, according to Basiago and Stillings. The CIA wished to "establish a defense regime protecting the Earth from threats from space" as well as a legal claim to "territorial sovereignty," making Obama something of a Martian conquistador. Presumably, Obama's CIA handlers needed him to "acclimate Martian humanoids and animals to their presence" in order to secure the U.S.-Martian alliance. (We'll bet you weren't even aware of Martian animals.)

"Simply put, your task is to be seen and not eaten," an elder chrononaut, retired Army Maj. Ed Dames, is alleged to have told a young Obama.

A spokesman for the National Security Council says that Obama has never been to Mars. Link -via Metafilter

Hairy Crab Dubbed “The Hoff”

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:31 AM PST

If you were to find a new species of animal with a hairy chest, it would only make sense to name it after actor David Hasselhoff. That’s what happened when a new hairy species of yeti crab was documented near thermal vents in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica.

The crabs were found in piles around hydrothermal vents on the seafloor during a 2010 expedition conducted by British scientists. Professor Alex Rogers of Oxford University led the voyage, and told LiveScience that the crabs were “literally, in places, heaped up upon each other.”

According to the BBC, the crab has long hairs on its abdomen, inspiring a Hasselhoff comparison. The creature was one of many new species discovered by British scientists exploring deep-sea vents in the Antarctic. Others spotted included a pale octopus and new starfish.

Belgian Fries

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:09 AM PST

If you ever get tired of French fries, you might want to try some Belgian fries (frites) -but be warned they aren’t quite “fast food.” In Belgium, fries are taken very seriously. They are the centerpiece of frites shops, or fritkots. And only recently have they begun to take off internationally. How are Belgian fries different from what we are used to?

First, frites require certain kinds of fresh potatoes. The Belgians prefer to use a local spud called bintje.

Also, true frites are cut thicker; in fact, they are about three times thicker than a McDonald's fry.

And to be real frites, they need to be fried twice. First to make the inside soft, and a second time to give the outside a nice bite.

And you have to remember that Belgian fries, along with a dipping sauce, are the centerpiece of a meal, not a side-dish.

All in all, it sounds like a tall order to export, but a company called Bel Frit is trying to do just that.

Bel Frit is now established in Eastern Europe and is looking toward opening fritkots in Asia and maybe even America. Link -via the Presurfer, who loves Belgian fries
