Stuff the PCMag Staff Bought in 2011
PCMag has a team of about 25 people that does nothing but
test products and recommend what to buy. And yet, people
always ask what we would buy for ourselves, though the
answers aren't always the same. After all, we can tell you
that the Oppo Blu-ray players are the best devices you can
buy, but the thing is, none of us on the editorial side
can afford the $1K price tag. What did we buy for ourselves

Barnes & Noble Considering Nook Spinoff
I can understand the logic of this deal. The retail stores
and real estate that come with Barnes & Noble are a drag on
what could be a lean, growing digital business. Even so, I
think one reason the Nook has seen success is because of its
strong retail presence and brand association. And if B&N sheds
the Nook, what is left of B&N?

How Banking Trojans Cover their Tracks
I do all of my banking online and have even moved to electronic
statements, but this post by Neil Rubenking gives me pause.
Evidently, the real risk isn't that your account could be
comprised, but that it could be compromised and you wouldn't
know it, giving the thieves more time to siphon money. The
latest techniques go so far as to obscure your online statements
so you can't get a full count of what is going where. Pretty
scary stuff.

File sharing is now an official religion in Sweden
Now, this isn't the place to go into what I think should or
should not be classified as a religion, but most people will
find this just a bit out there. The principles of unfettered
information sharing barely make a coherent philosophy, let
alone a religion. Don't you agree? Feel free to share your

Windows 8 to include built-in Reset, Refresh, and hard drive
imaging
Microsoft is promising to make the OS lighter and more flexible,
taking Windows away from the days of ms.config and registry
edits. If the company can swing it, it will be a huge improvement.
But I can't help thinking that under that shiny Windows 8 touch
interface, there will be Windows 7. And under that Vista. And
under that...
