I have two resolutions I really want to work on this year:

1) Putting the needs of others ahead of my own.

and

2) Living in today.

I really started to work on trying to help others more this year.
What a great feeling. Jesus was quoted by Luke in Acts and we
learned he said that "It is more blessed to give than to receive".
I wish I understood that a long time ago, It would have saved me
years of personal research on the subject. At least I am glad I
came to the same conclusion. It just took a lot longer my way.

I have also really been trying to live in the moment. What I mean
by that is this: The past is gone. There is nothing we can do to
change it. Regardless if it was good bad or indifferent it is in
the past. Bring good memories forward, leave the baggage behind.
Carrying bad baggage forward will do you no good what so ever.
Continuing to look backwards for answers on how to move forward
seems kind of like a useless process to me as well (sorry
therapists) Talking about it over and over and over is only going
to keep you stuck in the past. You don't live back there anymore,
you live here, now. Forgive those you need to, and make amends to
those you need to. and move on already.

In the same vain fear of the future can also be paralyzing. The
future isn't here yet. The funny thing is, my mind can make up all
kinds of hypothetical situations that may or may not ever happen
but I can spend hours, days, weeks, or years worried about them.
WHAT??? What kind of misery is that?

If you are a medical professional I know what I am about to say is
not exactly correct but Im just trying to make a basic point, No
need to send me emails correcting me.

If depression is getting stuck in the pain of the past and anxiety
is getting stuck in the uncertainty of tomorrow, it would seem that
the best place me to focus is on today. I can work today to do the
right thing. I can work today to make someone else's life better. I
can work today laying the ground work for a better tomorrow. I can
work today to clear the wreckage of the past. I have today. I will
learn to make the best of it.

So those are my goals for 2012. What about yours?

God Bless,

Mark
