Isis delays launch to fine-tune customer experience The Isis mobile wallet and payments network is going to miss its target of launching this summer because it is still fine-tuning the overall customer experience, according to a senior Isis executive. In an interview with FierceMobileContent, Jaymee Johnson, the head of marketing for Isis, said that the platform will not be ready by Sept. 21, the start of fall, and that the company will give more updates about its progress in October. Isis previously said it would launch this summer. Isis, which is being pushed by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile USA, has been steadily building support among merchants, payments providers and credit card companies. Johnson said there are now "hundreds" of merchants in Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City--its initial launch markets--ready to support the platform. Johnson said there isn't one particular reason for the delay, and that the company is working through a handful of final issues to improve the customer experience. "I would characterize where we are as checking items off the punch list," he said. The Isis executive said the company is making sure everything from buying a phone with Near Field Communications to downloading the Isis app and using the phone in a store is working properly. "It's really more of a commitment from an end-to-end customer experience to make sure all elements of that process are working well," he said. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile first announced Isis in late 2010. The Isis digital wallet allows consumers to conduct point-of-sale transactions, redeem coupons and use store merchant loyalty cards via NFC-enabled devices and corresponding point-of-sale reader technologies. Isis has inked partnerships with American Express, Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard. In addition, six device manufacturers--HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), Samsung and Sony--have committed to introducing products that support the Isis platform. In March Isis announced agreements with point-of-sale terminal manufacturers VeriFone, Ingenico, ViVOtech and Equinox Payments. Johnson said Isis has made sure that customers' mobile wallets will be much more secure than their existing wallets. He said that since the Isis wallet is PIN-protected, account information cannot be accessed directly from the wallet on the phone. In addition, he said customers can call carriers to have the contents of their mobile wallet remotely wiped if they lose their phone. "We are confident that security will be strong." Much has been made of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) decision not to include NFC in the iPhone 5, with some seeing it as a big blow to the technology. However, Johnson said Isis is still "bullish" on NFC. He said the mobile payments industry has coalesced around the technology as its standard. Johnson declined to comment on when Isis' first two markets will launch or on how many Isis will add after that. "It is certainly our intention to grow on a much broader basis in 2013," he said. Facebook shakes up engineering team to accelerate mobile efforts Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) said it has shaken up its engineering staff as it continues to shift its social networking platform from the desktop to mobile devices. "We've retooled the company to build faster on mobile," Facebook Director of Product Management Peter Deng said Thursday during a media briefing at the company's Menlo Park, Calif. headquarters. According to Deng, Facebook has now integrated mobile engineers into all of its product teams--in the past, the firm maintained separate engineering staffs dedicated expressly to products like mobile, messaging and photo sharing. "Slowly, over time, we are making everyone a mobile engineer," he said. Earlier this week, Facebook Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is working on a native application for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android to match its newly revamped app for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, admitting the company's previous reliance on HTML5-based mobile experiences was a serious tactical error. Facebook Product Manager Mick Johnson expanded on Zuckerberg's comments, saying that using HTML5 allowed the social network to build a mobile interface capable of running across a variety of devices and operating systems but resulted in a level of performance that "wasn't what our users expected" and "wasn't what we were happy with, either." In the weeks since Facebook introduced its native iOS app, its average App Store user rating has leaped from two stars to four. "Internally, we are psyched," Johnson said. "This is really just the start of the road for us. There are many things we want to do." Facebook's Director of Developer Products Doug Purdy said the company nevertheless remains bullish on HTML5: Its HTML5-based mobile website attracts more than 300 million users a month, enabling the company to connect with consumers on operating systems other than iOS and Android. "HTML5 is great to give us reach because most devices have some kind of Web browser," Purdy said. "We are building native applications for Android and iOS, but we can't build for all the devices that exist." Google: Wallet usage doubles since opening to all credit cards Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Wallet usage has doubled in the six weeks since the company rolled out a cloud-based version supporting all credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. With the move to the cloud, consumers may now save any card to Google Wallet by entering the number into the contactless payment app, online wallet or Google Play storefront. After the card is added, Google partner Bancorp Bank issues a Google Wallet Virtual Card linked to the consumer's account--when the user makes an in-store purchase, Google Wallet processes the merchant payment via the virtual card, then charges the amount of the original purchase to the selected debit or credit card. Earlier this week, Google said it will discontinue its branded prepaid card Oct. 17 because it has outlived its usefulness now that Google Wallet supports all cards. "Consumers have immediately grasped the benefit of being able to use any card when shopping in-store and online," Google Wallet Commerce Business Development Manager Frank Young said. Google has not announced exactly how many consumers are using Google Wallet or any related financial metrics. Young added that migrating Google Wallet to the cloud also has simplified card issuer integration. "Issuers no longer need to connect their systems directly to ours," he explained. "We have completely eliminated the cost and complexity for issuers to offer their customers their cards in a mobile wallet. What was previously an effort that could take many months, cost millions and require complex orchestration among many parties has been reduced to a few simple steps." The Near Field Communications-based Google Wallet first launched in May 2011. The app enables consumers to make purchases by tapping their Android smartphone at more than 200,000 MasterCard PayPass-enabled merchant terminals across the U.S. Google Wallet also includes support for SingleTap, which allows users to redeem coupons and/or earn rewards points, as well as Featured Offers, which spotlights exclusive discounts from select retailers. Barclaycard US said Thursday it will aggressively promote Google Wallet across its L.L.Bean and US Airways co-branded card programs, encouraging consumers to save their cards to the app from their online account. Once signed up, Barclaycard cardholders will see a full-color digital image of their card as a Google Wallet payment option. Amazon, Apple top rivals on mobile shopping satisfaction Amazon leads all other retailers on mobile shopping satisfaction, according to a new survey conducted by customer experience analytics firm ForeSee. Amazon scored 84 points out of a possible 100 on ForeSee's first Mobile Satisfaction Index, which measures metrics such as loyalty, recommendations and sales across 20 of the largest mobile retail sites. Avon followed at 83 points, edging past Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at 82. The top 20 mobile retailers registered an aggregate satisfaction score of 79 points, with Toys "R" Us bringing up the rear at 76. "Almost half of the measured retailers score 80 or above, which ForeSee considers to be a benchmark for excellence," the firm said. Satisfied customers are 69 percent more likely than dissatisfied shoppers to make a purchase using their mobile device. Seventy-two percent of satisfied consumers are more likely to recommend the retailer, and 58 percent are more likely to visit the mobile website or app again. First-time users of a mobile site or app tend to be less satisfied with their experiences as they attempt to learn new layouts, navigation and functionality, ForeSee adds: First-time visitors score 77, compared to 80 for repeat visitors. Twenty-eight percent of mobile shoppers are looking up product details, with 19 percent seeking price information and 17 percent checking product availability. Usage of retailer mobile sites outweighs usage of retailer apps by a margin of 68 percent to 32 percent. Mobile app users report a satisfaction score of 80 points, however, slightly ahead of mobile website users at 79 points. Netflix led app usage among measured companies at 59 percent, followed by eBay (53 percent), Groupon (52 percent) and Walgreens (48 percent). The ForeSee index is based on 4,500 customer surveys collected in August 2012. Seventy-six percent of consumers surveyed are mobile phone users, and 24 percent are tablet users. Users may customize the feature to disable birthday alerts or even disconnect their Facebook account from the BlackBerry Calendar app. Facebook for BlackBerry v3.2 also brings more colorful, stylized icons, replacing the generic profile icon with the user's current Facebook profile photo. In addition, users can view information about an event, post a message to the event's wall, view profiles of invited guests and receive related notifications. Facebook touts 543 million mobile monthly active users, up 67 percent over a year ago. Close to 60 percent of its total userbase now accesses the platform via mobile device. "On average, mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said. Consumer demand for BlackBerry continues to erode, however. The mobile operating system now powers just 9.5 percent of all smartphones across the U.S., down from a high of 43 percent in 2009, according to new data from research firm comScore.
