1. Apple sells 5M iPhone 5s in first weekend

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

iPhone 5

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) said it sold five million iPhone 5s in its first weekend of availability, one million more units than it sold of the iPhone 4S in that device's first weekend last year.

The sales rush had been expected, given that Apple indicated it had taken two million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 within 24 hours of making the gadget available. Apple indicated it sold out of initial supply of the phone, and according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Apple's retail sales partners--including Best Buy, RadioShack and Target--did not receive nearly as many units as Apple's own retail stores, leading to shortages.

Apple's decision to launch the device before the end for the third quarter should goose its quarterly sales figures and revenue. Last year Apple waited until October and the fourth quarter to release the iPhone 4S, which led to a weaker third quarter, though Apple followed it by selling a record 37 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries in the United States of the first wave of iPhone sales. A number of smaller carriers will start selling the iPhone 5 Sept. 28, including Leap Wireless' (NASDAQ:LEAP) Cricket, C Spire Wireless, Cellcom, Appalachian Wireless, Alaska Communications and GCI of Alaska and nTelos Wireless.

Apple's weekend iPhone 5 sales figure is lower than at least one analyst had hoped for. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Apple could have sold as many as 10 million iPhones during its first weekend of sales. However, J.P. Morgan analyst Katy Huberty raised the firm's iPhone 5 sales expectations based on Apple's weekend sales, according to CNET. Huberty now expects Apple to sell 25 million iPhones in the third quarter, slightly above previous expectations.

The iPhone 5 goes for $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for the 32 GB model and $399 for the 64 GB model, all with a two-year contract. The 16 GB iPhone 4S, introduced in October 2011, dropped to $99 with a two-year contract, in keeping with past Apple practice to lower the price of older models. The 8 GB iPhone 4, introduced in 2010, is free on contract.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 started Sept. 14 with the gadget going on sale Sept. 21 in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Apple said more countries will follow the week after and that by December the iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries for 240 carriers.

For carriers, the conventional wisdom has been that they suffer financially when a new iPhone is introduced due to the subsidies they put on the gadget (to be recouped later via monthly service fees). For example, AT&T saw its wireless service margin plunge by a third to 29 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 after the introduction of the iPhone 4S.

However, that dynamic may be changing, in part because of the changes carriers have made to their handset upgrade policies. Specifically, in April 2011 AT&T increased its smartphone early upgrade fee by $50. Then, in February 2012, AT&T doubled its one-time upgrade fee for customers who were due for an upgrade to $36, following Sprint, which did so in 2011. And in April 2012, Verizon started charging a $30 upgrade fee. Carrier margins are still expected to fall this year, though perhaps by less than they have in the past, according to Reuters, as the operators make up for it with the fees as well as more revenue from data plans.

2. T-Mobile launches HSPA+ on 1900 MHz spectrum in Las Vegas

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

T-Mobile USA has launched HSPA+ service on its 1900 MHz PCS spectrum in Las Vegas, the first full market where it has refarmed its HSPA+ spectrum. The spectrum refarming is a key component of T-Mobile's $4 billion network modernization.

Speaking at GigaOM's Mobilize conference Friday, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray announced the market and discussed the carrier's network plans. Ray said the carrier is excited to offer a  cohesive HSPA+ footprint in a major city. "We really want it to be a showcase," he said.

T-Mobile plans to use its 1700 MHz AWS spectrum for LTE while it refarms its 1900 MHz spectrum for HSPA+ service. The carrier plans to launch LTE next year. T-Mobile is starting to turn up its HSPA+ service in the 1900 MHz band in other cities such as Seattle, Washington, D.C., and the New York City metro area. Ray has said that the company will have a "material" footprint of refarmed 1900 MHz spectrum by year-end. The refarming will allow 1900 MHz devices, including unlocked Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone devices, to access faster speeds on T-Mobile's network.

On LTE, Ray said T-Mobile will be able to deploy 10 x 10 MHz channels across 90 percent of the top 25 U.S. markets when it launches LTE next year. The carrier will have a nationwide LTE footprint by the end of 2013, he said, but he did not specify a targeted number of covered POPs. Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks are working with T-Mobile to deploy LTE Release-10 equipment--dubbed LTE Advanced--for the rollout. Ray said the advanced LTE standard will deliver faster speeds and greater spectral efficiency. "It will be one of the fastest LTE offerings that will be in the marketplace," he said.

T-Mobile has cobbled together extra AWS spectrum as part of the breakup fee from AT&T's (NYSE:T) failed acquisition of T-Mobile as well as a spectrum swap Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ).

T-Mobile recently reintroduced an unlimited smartphone plan and the company is actively trying to lure unlocked iPhone customers to its network. "It's really about getting out there and offering real choice and real freedom to use your smartphone as it was designed," Ray said of the carrier's unlimited pricing plan. AT&T gave T-Mobile AWS spectrum in 128 market areas, including in 12 of the top 20 markets in the United States: Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. T-Mobile said the AT&T spectrum will increase its average spectrum holdings in the top 100 markets from approximately 54 MHz to approximately 60 MHz. Additionally,  T-Mobile said the spectrum from Verizon will  improve its spectrum position in 15 of the top 25 markets and allow it to cover 60 million more POPs with LTE.

Currently, T-Mobile offers an HSPA+42 network covering 184 million POPs in 185 markets, and its HSPA+21 network covers around 220 million POPs. The carrier advertises its network as America's largest network that provides "4G" speeds. Indeed, independent tests have shown that T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network offers download speeds of around 8 Mbps, similar to what Verizon provides via its LTE network.

Ray said customers using Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III smartphone, which is compatible with HSPA+42, are using an average of 1.6 GB per month. In mid-June the carrier said subscribers with smartphones capable of accessing its HSPA+ 42 Mbps network consumed an average of 1.3 GB per month.

3. Sprint, Ericsson hashing out small cell contract details

By Tammy Parker Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is negotiating to add Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to its list of small cell equipment suppliers, according to a top executive with the carrier.

Sprint announced in August that it would deploy Alcatel-Lucent's (NASDAQ: ALU) lightRadio metrocell architecture gear as well as Samsung's small cell gear throughout its footprint. Both are suppliers for Sprint's Network Vision infrastructure project as is Ericsson. When the August small cell contracts were announced Ericsson was missing from Sprint's list of small cell suppliers. That is apparently about to change, however.

"We have, as you have heard, inked one relationship with ALU (Alcatel-Lucent) and one relationship with Samsung, and we're able to use them to cover the entire country. We are also in discussions with Ericsson as well, but we don't have an agreement in place yet as we're still working out the details, Iyad Terazi, Sprint Nextel vice president of network development and engineering, told FierceBroadbandWireless.

Sprint is moving aggressively to deploy indoor picocells to boost coverage and capacity for its nascent LTE network. "These are smaller, lighter LTE picos that will plug directly into our core network. They're aimed at indoor end applications, even though they do have outdoor form factors as well, if you want to plug them on the outside of the building," said Terazi.

However, he said the outdoor market is much more challenging for small cell deployments because of issues involving interference, backhaul and rights of way/property rights. For that reason, Terazi does not expect to see mass deployments of outdoor small cells prior to 2014.

Sprint has been a leader in small cell deployment, seeing it as a way to expand its network cost effectively and help it continue offering unlimited data pricing for smartphones, which has been a key differentiator for the operator.

"We've been very vocal about transitioning the industry in this space because of our focus on scaling the cost and continuing to provide unlimited, which is really where this passion around this comes from. We are finding more ways to deploy more networks faster, cheaper, better so we can maintain our unlimited plans and give customers what they want. Ultimately that's what drives this strategy for us more than anything else," he said.

Airvana supplies Sprint's 3G CDMA femtocells. In July Sprint revealed in an FCC filing that it had 950,000 femtocells operating on its network.

The operator is also getting into 3G enterprise femtocells, which are being supplied by Ubee-Airwalk. Enterprise femtos can handle 30 simultaneous users and are specifically targeted toward small businesses."We have a few hundred of them deployed right now, and we expect to do thousands of them," said Terazi.

"The femto and the e-femto product are fairly mature today around 3G. We will over time potentially add 4G in them, especially for the consumer device, but we will also focus on a 4G-only pico that obviously has higher power, higher capacity. And we are looking to combine the two of them next to each other so we can keep the form factors simple, the deployment strategy simple and implementable," he said.

4. Lawmakers grill FCC officials on LightSquared's fate

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Lawmakers on Friday pressed FCC officials on why the agency had squashed LightSquared's plans to launch a wholesale LTE network so quickly, a stark reversal from earlier concerns that the agency has been too cozy with the company.

The lawmakers, mainly Republicans, on the House Energy and Commerce Committee's subcommittee on oversight grilled the FCC officials over the fact that LightSquared's 40 MHz of 1.6 GHz L-band spectrum is now essentially lying unused while the FCC urges broadcasters to give up spectrum for mobile broadband. The subcommittee's chairman, Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), said that was not "sound spectrum policy."

The tone is markedly different from the one the FCC has received during the past year regarding LightSquared, with congressional Republicans accusing the FCC of "crony capitalism" and pushing LightSquared's network because of the company's connections to the White House, charges the FCC has always denied. Now, it seems, lawmakers are taking the FCC to task for shutting down LightSquared's network.

"We must not permit regulatory uncertainty at the FCC to deter companies from investments that will bring more competition to the industry and more innovation for consumers," Stearns said. "We must not allow 40 MHz of spectrum to sit fallow while at the same time seek to relocate broadcasters and federal users off their spectrum holdings to free up more space for wireless use. And we must not let poor receiver standards result in more interference issues down the road."

Appearing before the committee was Julius Knapp, chief of the FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology, and Mindel De La Torre, who heads the FCC's International Bureau. In January 2011 the FCC gave LightSquared a conditional waiver to launch terrestrial service on its spectrum, contingent on LightSquared resolving GPS interference concerns. In February the FCC revoked the waiver and essentially shut down LightSquared's network plans after tests concluded that there was no practical way to mitigate the GPS interference concerns, a conclusion that LightSquared disputed. LightSquared has since filed for bankruptcy protection.

Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) defended the FCC, according to a Broadcasting & Cable report, arguing it had been put in a no-win situation. She said the FCC had taken steps to address the GPS interference concerns after they had been raised late in the regulatory process.

Meanwhile, the FCC officials' testimony noted that the FCC's Technological Advisory Council (TAC) is reviewing the standards for legacy GPS receivers, which would have been overloaded with LightSquared's terrestrial signal. LightSquared has called for a review of those standards and the FCC now expects a report on the issue "in the next few weeks." According to TMF Associates analyst Tim Farrar, that suggests that the FCC may be searching for a way for LightSquared to salvage its network, perhaps by sharing spectrum with government agencies, and that the issue is not going to fade away.

5. Sprint's Hesse predicts profit in 2014

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sprint Dan Hesse

Hesse

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) CEO Dan Hesse said he thinks the company is on track to turn a profit in 2014 after seven years of losses.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Hesse said the company still has a long way to go, reiterating comments he has made on earnings calls and at investor conferences. Still, he said Sprint will see profit-margin expansion and earnings growth in 2014.

The nation's No. 3 carrier is in the middle of its multi-year, $4 billion Network Vision network modernization plan and is also on the hook for a four-year, $15.5 billion commitment to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to sell the iPhone. Those costs have weighed heavily on both Sprint and investors, though Hesse has noted that both are essentially long-term investments for the company. However, Sprint's stock has surged this year in part on expectations that the company is starting to turn the corner.

"A year ago, management was talking about all the things they needed to do--it was hard to listen to them, they had so little credibility," Scott Dinsdale of KDP Investment Advisors, which owns Sprint bonds, told Bloomberg. "You just held your nose and held the bonds. Now they've gotten to the point where you can see light at the end of the tunnel."

Hesse has said that Sprint is now in the second stage of its turnaround, the investment phase, after going through four years of recovery in which it had to regain customer loyalty and improve its customer service and brand. Following the investment stage Sprint hopes to get back to growth.

By 2014 Sprint's Network Vision project will be concluded and Sprint's LTE network should be fully built out. By then, the Nextel iDEN network will be offline, taking the costs of running that network off Sprint's books (Hesse even said Sprint may eventually drop "Nextel" from its corporate name). Network Vision could also help reduce Sprint's roaming payments to Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ). But Sprint may need to pump more funds into its partner Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR); Sprint plans to offload some of its traffic onto Clearwire's forthcoming TDD-LTE network.

Still, skepticism remains that Sprint can pull it all off. "There's still a considerable amount of risk in Sprint since they are not quite halfway through the network migration," Dinsdale said. "They are chronic in their disappointments."

SPOTLIGHT ON... Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth

Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. While Instagram still commands the lion's share of the mobile photo market, is there room for new apps that capitalize on aspects of the photo app ecosystem that are either underserved or don't yet exist? Jarich: Tablets, carriers, service innovation… and the search for a car mount

Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Current Analysis Peter Jarich

Peter Jarich

Last month I talked about my impending drive cross-country in the hotspot-equipped 4G SUV.  For those of you who've been anxiously awaiting the results (I know you're out there), it went well.  Even with a signal booster, we lost coverage a few times, which was particularly disappointing given that we were on an Interstate.  Generally, however, the set-up worked well, network coverage was decent and a 7" tablet makes an excellent GPS and auto diagnostics monitor.  If one thing came up short, it was figuring out how to mount the stupid thing in the cockpit.  A standard windshield-based suction mount put the tablet too far from the driver.  Mountek makes a great set-up that supports a phone using the CD player slot that's quickly become the equivalent of an appendix--a vestige that just doesn't really serve a purpose anymore.  It doesn't open wide enough to support a tablet.  Ultimately, I created a Franken-mount that combined the two.  It was far from perfect, but it got the job done.

A few days after we arrived on the West Coast (fighting some intense Burning Man traffic to get from Reno into Berkeley), I found myself down in Santa Monica at Amazon's Kindle Fire HD launch.  If you've seen our analysis, you know our take.  If you haven't, just ask, and I'll see if I can get you a copy.  Beyond the multiple models and Jeff Bezos' somewhat surreal lecture on the basics of MIMO, one of the most interesting parts of the launch was the service component available with the LTE version.

The $50 annual plan with 250 MB of monthly data (and a $10 Amazon credit) builds on the notion that tablets benefit when they can be connected to more than WiFi.  It also builds on the dynamic of operators trying to drive connected tablets into the market, both as a strategy for growing traffic on their networks and a strategy for growing service revenues.  Of course, this isn't new.
