Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google, in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. Facebook, Twitter to support RIM's BlackBerry 10 Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) kicked off its BlackBerry Jam Americas conference with announcements that it would sell music, movies and other content through its app store. The company also said Facebook, Twitter and other popular social networking apps have promised to build BlackBerry 10 apps. RIM said the new version of its App World storefront will expand its selection of available content to include music, television and movies, a move that brings BlackBerry on par with Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play. BlackBerry users will be billed for titles using their BlackBerry ID or through carrier billing. However the company did not disclose specific carrier partners. The revamped App World will be available to developers starting Oct. 10. RIM also announced Facebook, LinkedIn, foursquare and Twitter will support RIM's BlackBerry 10 platform when it launches next year. In addition, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn will all be incorporated into BlackBerry Hub, the company's new unified messaging system. BlackBerry Hub allows users to quickly access messages, aggregated from various platforms. CEO Thorsten Heins emphasized the importance of multitasking in BlackBerry 10 by highlighting BlackBerry Peek, which lets users view the main screen without leaving or closing an application. BlackBerry Development Head Alec Saunders also made an appearance during the company's event, highlighting the benefits of developing for BlackBerry. According to AllThingsD, Saunders attempted to appeal to developers by touting BlackBerry's versatility, given that developers can program using native code, HTML5 or port existing Android apps. Saunders also encouraged developers to integrate BlackBerry Hub into their apps. BlackBerry released its Dev Alpha B, which runs BlackBerry 10, to developers during the event. These moves come as enthusiasm for BlackBerry continues to wane, with the percent of developers interested in developing for BlackBerry dropping to 9 percent, according to Appcelerator. RIM's market share also continues to shrink, to a 9.5 percent in July, according to comScore. "We understand the BlackBerry platform was not always easy to develop for but those days are gone," Heins said. "You stuck with us and we thank you." BlackBerry 10 is slated to debut in the first quarter of 2013. "We are convinced this platform will shape the next 10 years as profoundly and as positively as BlackBerry shaped the last decade. To do that, we are listening. We are focused. We are excited about our future," said Heins. Barnes & Noble revamps Nook Store discovery for new HD tablets A day after unveiling its new Nook Video service, Barnes & Noble announced the launch of two new high-definition Nook tablets, also promising a revamped Nook Store highlighted by enhanced app recommendation features. | | Click to view a video abou the new Nook HD. | Barnes & Noble will sell the seven-inch Nook HD at $199 and the nine-inch Nook HD+ at $269; both will arrive at retail in early November. The arrival of the tablets heralds an overhauled Nook Store including Nook Channels, which recommends apps, e-books and multimedia content based on Barnes & Noble data and expertise as well as algorithmic technologies. Customers can browse and shop Channels spanning a host of subjects, genres and themes. The Nook homescreen boasts the Your Nook Today icon, which includes the latest Newsstand subscriptions (delivered via Wi-Fi) as well as apps and new titles matched to the user's profile. Barnes & Noble is also rolling out Nook Catalog, which delivers tablet-optimized complimentary catalogs from retailers including Pottery Barn, L.L.Bean, Frontgate, Garnet Hill and Harry & David, as well as refreshed designs for newspapers and magazines. The Nook HD tablets additionally introduce Nook Profiles, designed for households where multiple users share one device. Each family member creates his own profile, accessible via the Nook homescreen and customized to his particular tastes and interests--parents can also install passwords to block mature content from children and implement additional settings and passwords to manage kids' access to the Web, email, content and shopping. Barnes & Noble revealed Nook Video Tuesday. The service enables consumers to stream and download feature films and television programming to devices including Nook tablets as well as smartphones, tablets and connected TVs from other manufacturers. Launching in the U.S. later this fall and expanding to the U.K. market in time for the holiday season, Nook Video will offer titles will in both standard and high-definition formats. All content is stored in the cloud, enabling a consumer to begin watching a video on one supported device and continue his viewing experience on another device exactly where he left off. Barnes & Noble additionally will integrate Nook Cloud with DVD and Blu-ray discs encoded with the UltraViolet digital rights authentication system, enabling UltraViolet digital content playback across Nook devices and Nook Video apps as well as through third-party apps. The introduction of the Nook HD devices promises to escalate Barnes & Noble's ongoing tablet rivalry with Amazon, which revealed its new Kindle Fire HD tablets earlier this month. According to iSuppli data published last month, Amazon controls 4.2 percent of the worldwide tablet market, ahead of Barnes & Noble at 1.9 percent but far behind Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad at 69.6 percent. Samsung issues patch for Galaxy S III TouchWiz UI security flaw Samsung Electronics is releasing an over-the-air patch to repair a security vulnerability discovered in its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone. Late last week, researchers revealed that clicking HTML5 code contained in Samsung's TouchWiz user interface could allow hackers to remotely reset the device, wiping out all of the user's personal data. According to security expert Ravi Borgaonkar, who demonstrated the flaw at a conference in Argentina, the vulnerability is a result of how TouchWiz processes unstructured supplementary service data codes that execute commands on the device's keypad, and can be exploited through web links, QR codes and SMS. "We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update," Samsung told The Verge. "We recommend all Galaxy S III customers to download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service." Samsung's Belgian unit confirmed via Twitter that it is testing the patch for the Galaxy S II, although the manufacturer has not yet commented on other devices with TouchWiz integration. Samsung introduced TouchWiz in 2008. The customizable UI boasts specially designed widgets enabling users to personalize their mobile experience, enabling one-touch access to their favorite applications and features. Samsung relies on TouchWiz to help differentiate its smartphones from other devices running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system. AT&T launches voice-enabled U-verse remote app for iOS AT&T (NYSE:T) is rolling out a new voice-enabled remote control application optimized for its U-verse digital cable service, enabling subscribers to manage their viewing experience via Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and iPad. Available as a free download from Apple's App Store, the U-verse Easy Remote App features voice remote control capabilities for changing channels as well as playing and recording programs. U-verse customers can choose the program they wish to watch by speaking the title or channel number into their iOS device, or call for actions like "pause," "rewind" or "fast-forward." The app also boasts VoiceOver screen reader software that reads aloud TV show and channel information as viewers scroll through the programming guide, as well as support for gesture commands and one-touch access to closed captioning. According to AT&T, the U-verse Easy Remote App leverages its U-verse Enabled platform, which allows customers to connect their iPhone or iPad to their TV receiver over their in-home Wi-Fi network. The operator explains that because U-verse is 100 percent IPTV-based, customers with a high-speed Internet account can connect their apps to any U-verse receiver in the home through channel 9301, sidestepping special equipment like connected receivers or TV sets. Consumers must subscribe to both U-verse TV and U-verse High-Speed Internet to access the Easy Remote app. AT&T adds that the Easy Remote app is based on its Watson speech recognition technology and uses AT&T's Speech API, which implements advanced natural language processing to recognize and understand spoken words. Watson technology also powers AT&T services like mobile voice directory search with YPMobile, voicemail to text and the AT&T Translator app for iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android. Writing on the operator's Innovation Space blog this spring, AT&T Senior Executive Vice President of Technology and Network Operations John Donovan said AT&T Labs researchers have been working on Watson services for years, adding the company retains more than 600 patents in the area of speech recognition. The operator opened Watson APIs to third-party developers in July, with an emphasis on seven areas: Web search, local business search, question and answer, voicemail to text, SMS, U-verse electronic programming guides and a dictation API for general speech recognition implementation. Google slashes Android app prices as Play storefront tops 25B downloads Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced that consumers have now downloaded more than 25 billion Android applications from its Play storefront, commemorating the milestone by cutting pricing on selected apps and games. Over the next five days, Google will offer Android titles from developers including Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio Entertainment, runtastic and Full Fat at a discounted price of 25 cents. "We'll also be offering some special collections like 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines, all at special prices," adds Google Director of Digital Content Jamie Rosenberg on the Android Official Blog. Google Play (formerly Android Market) launched in October 2008 and now boasts more than 675,000 Android apps in all. The storefront sells premium Android apps in 132 international markets and offers free apps in 190 countries. Despite Google Play's growth, the store has been less lucrative for developers than Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store for iOS or the Amazon Appstore for Android. For every $1 generated by the App Store, Amazon Appstore drives an average of $0.89 per user, while Google Play earns developers just $0.23 per user, according to data published earlier this year by app store analytics firm Flurry. Both Apple and Amazon tout significant retail experience and seamless purchase mechanisms, while Google's strengths are its search tools and advertising technologies. Mobile privacy fears spawn App Trust Project Morgan Reed started out his recent keynote at the MoDevTablet conference in Arlington, Va., by explaining that, as the executive director for the Association of Competitive Technology, "I work for you." That didn't mean, however, he was going to be anything but blunt about how developers should be thinking about the way they collect and manage customer information. "Privacy is not a checkmark," he told the crowd of smartphone and tablet developers who attended the three-day event. "It's something that has to be very upfront and clear about everything you do in your business." Reed used MoDevTablet to officially announce The App Trust Project, an initiative the ACT hopes will address growing concerns about the degree of openness or "transparency" developers demonstrate about how consumer data is used. "Our goal is to design transparency and notification systems that are meaningful to your customers, not just to lawyers," the call for participation says. "We have been working for months with a group of developer on simplified privacy notifications, and we're continuing to identify new ideas and new areas to tackle."
