Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google, in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. While Instagram still commands the lion's share of the mobile photo market, is there room for new apps that capitalize on aspects of the photo app ecosystem that are either underserved or don't yet exist? RIM adds 2M new BlackBerry subscribers  | | Click here for a video from RIM showing off BlackBerry 10. | Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) shares were up today after the company announced it added 2 million more subscribers to its BlackBerry service, countering expectations that the company would report an overall decline in its customer base. During the company's Blackberry Jam Americas developer conference in San Jose, Calif., RIM disclosed that it now has 80 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide, up from its previous count of 78 million. The figure represents a bright spot for the troubled BlackBerry maker, which has seen its global smartphone market share tumble from 11.7 percent a year ago to 5.2 percent in the second quarter, according to Gartner. Most analysts believe RIM's gains have occurred mainly in emerging markets in Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere, while its business in North America and Europe has fallen. RIM's stock was up around 1 percent in trading today to around $6.60 per share. The company is scheduled to report quarterly earnings Thursday. During its developer conference, RIM offered additional information on its BlackBerry 10 operating system, which it plans to release in the first quarter of next year. The company showed off the platform's user interface, BlackBerry Flow, which allows users to scroll seamlessly between apps. BlackBerry Peek allows users to glance at another application without leaving the one a user is currently running. And BlackBerry Hub combines users' various inboxes, messages and notifications. RIM also sought to counter concerns that BlackBerry doesn't offer an ecosystem that can compete with those from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) or Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). The company said that Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and foursquare would offer native BlackBerry 10 applications when the platform launches, and that RIM is planning to sell movies, music and TV shows through its App World storefront starting next month. (See related story here.) Further, RIM's marketing chief Frank Boulben told Bloomberg that the company has so far handed out 6,000 prototype BB10 phones to developers to encourage them to support the platform. Boulben also gave some hints about how RIM will roll out BB10. He said the company will conduct a "progressive reveal" of the platform to business executives and technology press before a splashy launch event early next year. RIM plans to offer a handful of BB10 models with both touchscreens and Qwerty keyboards, and Boulben said RIM expects to be selling BB10 phones in roughly two dozen markets by the end of the first quarter. He said some carriers will begin testing the phones next month, though he didn't provide specifics. Despite continued concerns that RIM's new products won't be able to make a dent in a market dominated by Apple and Google, or compete with the likes of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8, RIM executives continued to maintain a positive outlook. "I think we have a clear shot at being the No. 3 mobile ecosystem in the world," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said, according to AllThingsD. "We're working hard. We're not sleeping much." T-Mobile COO: We lost our way after AT&T merger announcement LAS VEGAS--T-Mobile USA made shareholders a priority over customers in the months following AT&T's (NYSE:T) March 2011 announcement that it planned to purchase the company for $39 billion, a top T-Mobile executive said. And that shift in priorities caused the company to lose its way, according to T-Mobile COO Jim Alling, adding that the firm is now working hard to rekindle its previous passion for putting the customer first. "Every single customer matters. That is most important thing we have to rekindle," Alling said during his keynote address at the Competitive Carriers Association conference here. "And we are on our way," he added. Alling, of course, was referring to AT&T's planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile. The company later withdrew its bid in December 2011 after facing intense opposition from both the Department of Justice and the FCC. In the months following AT&T's announced acquisition of T-Mobile, the operator saw its churn climb and its subscriber base falter as customers fled the operator in favor of its competitors. Until recently Alling was the acting interim CEO of T-Mobile, and during his keynote he joked about his temporary stint at CEO, calling it an "interesting summer job." T-Mobile last week named John Legere, former CEO of Global Crossing, as the new CEO of the company, with Alling returning to his role as COO. Alling also talked about T-Mobile's support for new spectrum auctions and data roaming, both of which are issues critical to CCA members. CCA blasts AT&T spectrum purchases, urges regulators to consolidate review The Competitive Carriers Association again urged the FCC to combine AT&T Mobility's (NYSE:T) various spectrum purchases into one comprehensive transaction that the agency could more effectively review. AT&T, for its part, staunchly argued against such a move, contending it would "introduce delay that is contrary to the public interest." "Allowing the largest carriers to obtain unlimited amounts of spectrum on the secondary market raises serious competitive concerns," said CCA President and CEO Steven Berry. "The only way for the FCC to truly see the devastating consequences of further spectrum aggregation is by consolidating the proposed applications. On their own, AT&T's proposed license acquisitions may not seem significant, but when added together, it totals to a significant amount of spectrum." In the group's filing, CCA pointed to more than a dozen different transactions in which AT&T is working to acquire 700 MHz, AWS and WCS spectrum. Specifically, AT&T is looking to acquire: - 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum from NextWave Wireless, Comcast and Horizon Wi-Com;
- 700 MHz spectrum from 700 MHz L.L.C., Cavalier Wireless, Ponderosa Telephone Co., David L. Miller, Comsouth Cellular, Farmers Telephone Company, CenturyTel Broadband Wireless and McBride Spectrum Partners;
- And AWS spectrum from CenturyTel Broadband Wireless and Cavalier Wireless.
"Viewed in isolation, each individual application might appear relatively unlikely to harm competition, but each transaction in which AT&T increases its overall spectrum holdings to the competitive disadvantage of other carriers is part of a larger wave of consolidation, and the Commission must take a holistic look at the impact of this ongoing spectrum aggregation on competition and consumers," CCA argued. Not surprisingly, AT&T in its counter filings said the FCC should not take a comprehensive look at its individual spectrum purchases. "AT&T's transactions are independent of one another and involve different parties and different geographic areas. The Commission routinely denies consolidation of transactions that are not contingent on each other, and it should follow that precedent here," AT&T wrote, noting that its spectrum purchases would benefit the public by allowing the carrier to bolster its 700 MHz network. AT&T said the extra spectrum would in some places allow it to deploy LTE in a 10x10 MHz configuration instead of a slower 5x5 MHz configuration. If the FCC does consolidate its review of AT&T's various spectrum purchases, CCA said the agency should impose two stipulations on AT&T: the carrier should provide "seamless interoperability" across the Lower 700 MHz band and should ensure the availability of data roaming "on reasonable terms and conditions." AT&T pushed against those stipulations, arguing the FCC should handle 700 MHz interoperability in a separate proceeding. The FCC has had a 700 MHz interoperability proceeding open since March. The dust-up between CCA and AT&T is notable in light of AT&T's failed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Regulators withheld approval of the deal over concerns it would stifle competition in the market. However, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) recently won federal approval of its $3.9 billion purchase of AWS spectrum from a group of cable companies. Further clouding the issue is the FCC's plan to explore rules that determine the agency's so-called spectrum-screen, which it uses when reviewing spectrum transactions. If a carrier acquires too much spectrum and violates the screen, the deal is more closely scrutinized. Currently, the screen is different for each proposed transaction. It's unclear if AT&T's proposed spectrum transactions will be affected by the FCC's spectrum-screen proceeding. Regional operators uncertain about longevity of unlimited data LAS VEGAS--The CEOs of some of the smaller U.S. wireless operators told attendees at the Competitive Carriers Association gathering here that unlimited data may not be sustainable for the long-term. But they added that the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the wireless industry should not be underestimated. During a keynote roundtable discussion featuring the CEOs of C Spire, Cellcom, Atlantic Tele-Network, Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) and Immix Wireless, the executives spoke about the struggles they have competing in what they consider a "monopolistic" environment where the two largest Tier 1 operators, AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), dominate the market. When asked about unlimited data pricing and whether it is sustainable, Cellcom President and CEO Pat Riordan said that his company does not offer unlimited data and he does not think it's sustainable. "There comes a point where there is so much demand and if you are going to make it one price it is not sustainable," Riordan said. Hu Meena, president and CEO of C Spire Wireless, noted that his company does offer unlimited data but admitted that it will be challenging to maintain that pricing. However, he implored the attendees at the event to not "underestimate the ingenuity and engineering prowess" of the wireless industry, hinting that there may be ways to offer unlimited data for a longer time using techniques such as Wi-Fi offloading, small cells and more. Clearwire President and CEO Erik Prusch said that his company currently offers unlimited data and he thinks it is sustainable for his company because it has an abundance of spectrum. He also noted that customers find unlimited data appealing because they don't have to monitor their data usage. While unlimited data is appealing to consumers and a differentiator for small operators, Michael Prior, president and CEO of Atlantic Tele-Network, said that he believes that the business model for unlimited data is flawed because the majority of users are not heavy data users and therefore they are paying for unlimited data and not using it. "The average customer is losing out," he said. "They are paying for unlimited and not using it." Last month NPD's Connected Intelligence group released a report indicating that most people use less than 2 GB of data per month with their smartphones and that unlimited data plans aren't necessary. Specifically, the firm said that just 11 percent of T-Mobile customers use more than 3 GB of data per month vs. 4 percent for AT&T and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and 3 percent for Verizon. NPD noted that T-Mobile's users tend to be younger and more likely to view video and stream music. Texas Instruments turns investment away from wireless Texas Instruments is shifting its chip business away from smartphones and tablets to more industrial segments such as the automotive. The company has faced increasing competition from companies like Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and has also lost ground to smartphone makers such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung, which have been developing their own chips. TI has already started to expand sales of its OMAP platform beyond smartphones to industrial users. The shift in focus will put TI in the running with Freescale, another chip-maker that moved away from smartphones three years ago. TI's Senior Vice President for Embedded Processing Greg Delagi told investors of the move during an investor meeting yesterday. Delagi said that the company's research and development profile for OMAP "needs to look different." However, he also noted that OMAP's growth in the embedded product market will be slower than the wireless business but he declined to provide specifics on how this shift will impact TI's financials. Delagi said that TI expects its embedded processor and wireless chip business to generate gross margins in the range of 55 percent to 60 percent and operating margins of about 30 percent. In July, TI warned that its third-quarter revenue would be weaker than usual for this time of year as global economic uncertainties cause customers to be more cautious.
