Today's Top News

1. Accedo acquires fellow TV app innovator Cloverleaf

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Sweden's Accedo announced that it has acquired New York City-based CloverLeaf Digital, in a match of companies working to enable next-generation TV applications.

Both Accedo, which helped pioneer the concept of an app store for the advanced TV applications sector, have long been working with IPTV and cable TV companies.

Lawrence Brickman, the managing partner at CloverLeaf, who also is a former executive of Cablevision Systems and Insight Communications, said the deal will better position CloverLeaf to expand internationally with Accedo's help, while also strengthening its capabilities for existing North American customers. CloverLeaf will become Accedo's New York office, headed up by Brickman.

While giants like Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) are working on advanced TV applications for the service provider giants like AT&T (NYSE: T), it is good to see two smaller players teaming up to grow and better serve their own base of smaller service providers, helping to ensure the customers of those service providers will not be left behind as TV application innovations continue.

2. Social TV platform zeebox debuts in U.S.

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

U.K.-based social TV juggernaut zeebox is make its much-ballyhooed U.S. debut today, with help from Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), NBCUniversal, HBO and Cinemax. The universal, cross-channel TV viewing companion application is now available for use by U.S. customers via Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, Android, and the Web.

In addition to making zeebox available to their customers, Comcast and NBCUniversal also are backing zeebox with investments and promotional support.

Developed by former EMI executive Ernesto Schmitt and former BBC iPlayer CTO Anthony Rose, zeebox is a cloud-based social discovery platform that recognizes the context of what its users are watching and enhances the viewing experience with relevant content, ability to purchase products they see on TV and other experiences from across the Web, TV programmers, social networks and advertisers. The company's OpenBox API allows content owners and creators to quickly enhance their own content with greater depth of experiences for viewers.

HBO said it is bringing popular programming such as Boardwalk Empire and True Blood to zeebox, while sister network Cinemax also is including some of its own original programming. The social TV start-up has done its own consumer research, which it said shows that up to 70 percent of U.S. television viewers are interested in the social TV features promised by zeebox.

TV service providers and content owners are becoming more interested in enabling social TV experience, though the models for doing so remain immature and highly fragmented. In addition to being available on a variety and devices and via the Web, zeebox seeks to address some of that fragmentation by integrating with social networks like Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) and Twitter.

This week's replacement ref fiasco on Monday Night Football was a reminder that TV viewers are ready and willing to immediately flock to social media to discuss something they just viewed on TV. In a sense, zeebox, is one of the tools that can help the TV service and content communities harness and leverage those inclinations.

3. Mediacom to deploy TiVo whole-home DVR in 2013

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) has announced that cable TV operator Mediacom will be deploying TiVo's whole home product suite starting early next year, offering further proof that the DVR pioneer is shifting away from its legacy of court battles with service providers and into a new era of partnerships with them.

TiVo Premiere S DVR

The TiVo whole-home solution consists of the TiVo Premiere Q 4-tuner gateway DVR, TiVo Mini IP set-top box client and companion applications for iOS and Android devices. Mediacom also intends to offer the 6-tuner, DOCSIS 3.0-capable Pace XG1 gateway with the TiVo experience when it becomes available. TiVo will be the primary software provider for Mediacom's whole-home solution, and as in other TiVo deployments, the offering combines linear cable television with on-demand and Internet video content through the TiVo interface.

As its patent disputes with some of the larger service providers have been settled, TiVo has started gaining more service provider deployment commitments, particularly with smaller and independent service providers (Mediacom is the eighth-largest cable TV operator). Though a recent deployment with Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) was delayed as Charter began rethinking its set-top box strategy, these new customer engagements are likely to stick, as long as TiVo can continue to evolve its platforms into the new forms, such as cloud-based offerings, in which service providers are interested in using them.

4. CBS programming lands on Cablevision Optimum on-demand

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Optimum has added an array of CBS (NYSE: CBS) network shows to its free on-demand TV offering, an announcement that comes just after the cable TV operators signed a new retransmission consent deal with the broadcaster. Cablevision now offers shows from all four of the major TV networks as part of its online offering.

As much as the cable TV operators do not want to bow to the content industry in retransmission negotiations, newly-signed contracts will often immediately translate to the ability to expand programming availability for viewers who are coming to expect that they should not have to have their eyes glued to their living room TVs and only during primetime hours to watch their favorite shows.

Episodes of a more than a dozen shows now will be available for free on demand viewing the day after they first air on CBS. Those TV shows include Big Bang Theory, CSI, NCIS, Elementary, Big Brother, Two and a Half Men, and several other series.

The launch also includes a Fall Preview video showing highlights from upcoming new and returning CBS fall series. All titles are available to customers with Broadcast Basic service and above and a digital set-top box, and can be accessed from the Free On Demand menu on channel 502 or through the Optimum TV user interface menu.

5. Dish Network's dishNET broadband readies nationwide push

By Dan O'Shea Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Starting next Monday, satellite TV operator Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) will expand availability of its dishNET broadband satellite Internet service nationwide. Positioned as a solution to answer rural broadband needs and provide broadband coverage to other under-served market segments with "4G-level" speed--up to 10 Mbps for downloads--the service starts at $39.99 per month, and features a $10 monthly discount when bundled with Dish TV packages.

Dish CEO Joseph Clayton is unveiling dishNET today at the flagship Cowboy Maloney's Electric City retail store in Jackson, Miss., the historic retail launch site of digital satellite TV and satellite radio services.

In announcing the offering, Dish noted that the Federal Communications Commission last month reported 19 million Americans lack access to high-speed Internet, including 14.5 million who live in rural regions, indicating that almost 24 percent of rural residents lack broadband access.

However, the rural broadband market opportunity also has turned into an abyss for some operators. Service providers such as the now-defunct Rocky Mountain Broadband have come up with ambitious plans to use wireless technologies such as WiMAX to address the market, but for various reasons, they haven't paid off. The successful satellite TV giant may be in a better position to address the market need, while also having the patience to hang in if acceptance is slow to start.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Comcast expands WiFi to North, Central California

Cable TV operators continue to be aggressive with WiFi, as Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) today announced that its Xfinity WiFi service is now available in California for no additional charge to Xfinity Internet residential customers or Comcast Business Class Internet customers.

The offering covers the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Fresno, Monterey, Santa Maria and Chico, among many other cities and towns in Northern and Central California, with wireless Internet service.

Comcast has installed and activated a few thousand Xfinity WiFi hotspots throughout California, and the company said it will continue to install additional hotspots in California throughout the year. Prior to this announcement, most of Comcast's WiFi presence was in the New England and mid-Atlantic regions. The company recently expanded it New England WiFi coverage.

Even as cable TV companies have worked to enhance WiFi availability for their core residential customers, they have had their eyes on other prizes, expanding availability to business customers as well. The Cable WiFi cooperative roaming agreement will enhance the value of their WiFi coverage zones, and if they end up—as rumors and reports suggest—offering hybrid WiFi/cellular services in the future, the expanded coverage will come in very handy.
