Register Today! | | The best new iOS, Android apps of Sept. 2012 Mobile applications were big coming into September, and they're getting even bigger as we prepare to exit the month--literally. As you've undoubtedly heard by now, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) released its new iPhone 5 last week, expanding the iconic smartphone's touchscreen half an inch to four inches--needless to say, a larger screen means larger apps, and everyone from Facebook to Flipboard is rolling out iOS updates designed to maximize the increased real estate. The larger iPhone screen isn't the only big opportunity awaiting developers as they dig into Apple's new iOS 6. According to a new survey conducted by Appcelerator and IDC, 36 percent of developers are most excited to capitalize on Apple's new homegrown Maps service--in fact, Apple has said it will turn to its developer partners to plug in the platform's many gaps and inconsistencies. Twenty-one percent of iOS developers told Appcelerator and IDC they're most looking forward to leveraging Apple's enhanced Siri voice-activated software, and 15 percent are most excited by the possibilities of Passbook, which collects users' movie tickets, transit passes, retailer loyalty cards and related documentation. Target, Starbucks, American Express, Fandango, Major League Baseball, American Airlines and United Airlines are among the major brands who've already committed to Passbook integration. While it will be fascinating to see how the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 reshape mobile software development moving forward, that doesn't mean developers were resting on their laurels in the weeks leading up to Apple's launch. In fact, September yielded some of the most intriguing and innovative App Store (and Google [NASDAQ:GOOG] Play) entries in recent memory. Click here for the best new apps of the month--and brace yourself for the even bigger, bolder apps still to come.--Jason Read more about: iOS, Android back to top | | | Sponsor: Mobility Tech Conference & Expo FierceLive! Report: Google expanding Street View to mobile Web maps Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is bringing its Street View technology to its maps application for the mobile Web, offering consumers additional functionality not present in rival Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new, much-maligned Maps platform for iOS. Street View presents panoramic images of roadways across the globe, enabling users to view photos of homes, businesses and landmarks from a sidewalk-level perspective. The New York Times reports Google will introduce Street View for the mobile Web within the next two weeks. Street View was a component of Google Maps services pre-installed on past Apple iOS devices, but with competitive tensions between the two mobile giants mounting, Apple dumped preloaded Google services like Maps and YouTube from its new iOS 6, rolling out its own Maps effort developed in-house. Consumers have since identified dozens of Apple Maps inaccuracies including missing roads, misplaced landmarks and mislabeled businesses. The inaccuracies have prompted some users to stop using the service to access Google Maps data via their iPhone or iPad's Safari browser. While Google issued a native YouTube app for iOS earlier this month, the status of its efforts to build a native Maps app is unclear. Earlier this week, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company has not taken any steps to submit a native mapping solution to Apple's App Store, but he said the two companies are in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." Schmidt added that any decision on Google Maps' return to iOS or approval of a native Google Maps app is in Apple's hands: "We have not done anything yet," he said. "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call." The New York Times reports Google is at work on a Maps app for iOS, although it is unlikely to surface for at least several months. Sources said Google was blindsided by Apple's move to end their mapping relationship and did not begin work on a native Maps app until after Apple publicly announced its own mapping service this June. In addition, Google is rumored to be releasing a Google Maps with 3D imagery comparable to Apple's, but its own 3D technology exists separate from its Google Maps database as part of the Google Earth service, and combining the two will take some time. Apple maintains that its Maps platform is a work in progress. "We are continuously improving it, and as Maps is a cloud-based solution, the more people use it, the better it will get," an Apple spokesperson said last week. "We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better." Apple also acknowledged the absence of key features like transit information and said it is working with developer partners to incorporate that data. Fiksu: iPhone 5 anticipation triggered decline in iOS app downloads Daily downloads from Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store dropped more than 7 percent in August, a decline credited to mounting consumer anticipation for the new iPhone 5 and its revamped iOS 6 operating system, according to mobile user acquisition platform Fiksu. | | Click here to view the charts from the Fiksu study. | The Fiksu App Store Competitive Index, which measures the average aggregate daily download volume of the top 200 free U.S. iPhone apps, reports that App Store downloads fell to 4.05 million per day in August, down from 4.37 million in July--a 7.3 percent decline. Fiksu's Cost per Loyal User Index, which measures the cost of acquiring a loyal user for brands who proactively market their apps, decreased by close to 13 percent to $1.34, down from $1.54 the previous month. "August was like the calm before the storm for app marketers," said Fiksu CEO Micah Adler. "Similar to the period preceding the iPhone 4S launch in 2011, we saw users once again holding off on downloading apps in the weeks before the much-anticipated iPhone 5 launch. App marketers also took the gas off their advertising spending during August, awaiting the availability of iOS 6 in September and the chance to promote updated apps. The combined effect made for a slow month overall ahead of what we expect to be a busy Q4." The Fiksu platform is designed to help brands more cost-effectively market their iOS and Android applications, leveraging predictive algorithms to optimize advertising campaigns in real time. The firm has accumulated more than 42.5 billion app actions like launches, registrations, in-app purchases and real-time bidding requests. Apple launched the iPhone 5 late last week, selling 5 million units in the smartphone's first weekend at retail. In addition, more than 100 million iOS device owners have updated to iOS 6. AT&T, Twilio team on Web-based cloud applications suite for business AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is partnering with Twilio to launch Advanced Communications Suite, a new Web portal that offers enterprise and small business customers a host of voice and SMS-enabled applications for interacting with employees, partners, suppliers and consumers. Powered by Twilio's cloud communications services and API platform, Advanced Communications Suite sells completed applications to non-technical users, as well as voice, SMS and client components for more technically advanced customers. Pre-built ACS apps include appointment reminder services, polling/surveying data collection tools, business continuity solutions and geo-targeted messaging. According to AT&T, customers first choose a package within the ACS platform--from there, they may subscribe to apps they want by using "credits" rather than dollar amounts, a move the operator said will simplify the shopping experience. AT&T stated that apps within the ACS service are designed to run across virtually any wireless network. The carrier added it is currently looking at integrating video capabilities into some ACS apps, enabling customers to roll out videoconferencing and related services. "The most exciting part about ACS is not just the cool pre-built apps now available to AT&T's SMB and enterprise customers, but the fact the number of apps offered within ACS will continue to grow, providing potentially interesting business opportunities for developers working on the Twilio API," states Twilio Developer Evangelist Rob Spectre. "Further, AT&T customers using ACS get the identical Twilio API, meaning the wealth of helper libraries, hackpacks and other tools in the Twilio ecosystem just work. Regardless of where your bill comes from, the code you write to boost your communications with Twilio is exactly the same." As of June 2012, more than 100,000 developers are building applications on the Twilio cloud platform, up from about 30,000 a year earlier. The startup has raised $34 million in venture financing. The AT&T deal represents Twilio's first reseller partnership. Google rolls out Play services platform to Android developers Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is launching its Play services platform, enabling third-party Android developers to integrate other Google products into their applications. First announced this summer at Google's annual I/O developer conference, Google Play has a services component that runs on the Android device and a thin client library that developers package with their app. The Google Play services component is delivered as an APK via the Google Play storefront, ensuring that updates are not dependent on carrier or OEM system image upgrades. Google notes that newer Android devices will have Google Play services as part of their system image, but updates are still pushed through the Google Play store regardless of the device's vintage. The first iteration of the Google Play services client library includes Google+ social networking sign-in capabilities and +1 APIs, as well as OAuth 2.0 functionality. "OAuth 2.0 is a good choice for the job, offering the promise of strong security minus passwords," explains Google Developer Advocate Tim Bray. "Typically, when you want your Android app to use a Google account to access something, you have to pick which account on the device to use, then you have to generate an OAuth 2.0 token, then you have to use it in your HTTP-based dialogue with the resource provider. These tasks are largely automated for you if you're using a recent release of the Google APIs Client Library for Java." Google said the Play services launch should take about a week, adding "Please wait for us to post that the rollout is complete before launching any apps on the store which use Google Play services." Devices running versions prior to Android 2.2 or lacking the store app are not supported. To download the Google Play services SDK, click here. Google Play (formerly Android Market) launched in October 2008 and now boasts more than 675,000 Android apps in all. The storefront sells premium Android apps in 132 international markets and offers free apps in 190 countries. As of this week, consumers have downloaded more than 25 billion Android apps from Google Play. Forecast: Firefox OS will power just 1% of smartphones shipped in 2013 Mozilla's forthcoming Firefox mobile operating system will power just 1 percent of all smartphones shipped in 2013, according to a new forecast issued by Strategy Analytics. Firefox OS (formerly Boot to Gecko) promises a new phone architecture that relies entirely on the Web to enable HTML5 applications with complete access to core device APIs. Telefónica is scheduled to begin selling Firefox-powered smartphones in Brazil in early 2013 through its Vivo unit; the devices will be priced in the same range as feature phones. But as Strategy Analytics notes, the entry-level smartphone segment is currently dominated by Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android in almost every international region, posing major headaches for Firefox OS moving forward. "To succeed, Firefox OS will need to address at least three main challenges: They are low brand awareness among smartphone consumers worldwide, a limited retail presence in the influential United States market, and a relatively modest ecosystem of supporting apps and services," said Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston. That doesn't mean Firefox OS is dead in the water, Mawston told TechCrunch. "It took Android just two years from commercial launch to overtake Symbian and go from new entrant to established global leader, so things can change extremely fast in the smartphone industry," he said, adding that Android launched commercially in the fourth quarter of 2008 and claimed the worldwide market share lead just two years later. Firefox OS also could make headway as manufacturers seek to diversify their device portfolios away from Android, which remains the target of a patent war spearheaded by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Last week, ZTE said it is developing Firefox smartphones slated to launch in the first quarter of next year. "We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android," said ZTE Director of Corporate Branding & Communications David Dai Shu. "It's all part of our wider plans to create a better balance of products using various operating systems. We won't just rely on Android or [Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT)] Windows." In addition to Telefónica, Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Telecom Italia and Telenor also have announced their support for the Mozilla platform. "Firefox Mobile OS can help us drive an HTML5-based platform for creating lower-cost smartphone options for prepaid, postpaid and wholesale customers," Sprint Product Chief and Executive Vice President Fared Adib said in July.
