Instagram success paves way for photo, video app growth
Facebook's $715 million acquisition of photo manipulation app Instagram in April caused a fury among app developers specializing in photo apps. A month later, Facebook scooped up the development team behind Lightbox, another photo editing app that allows Android devices users to take and share photos across multiple social media platforms. And Google, in an effort to differentiate itself, recently acquired Nik Software, which makes the iOS photo sharing application Snapseed. While Instagram still commands the lion's share of the mobile photo market, is there room for new apps that capitalize on aspects of the photo app ecosystem that are either underserved or don't yet exist? 1. Apple CEO Cook apologizes for Maps, suggests alternatives Bing, Waze

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has issued a public apology for the company's new Maps platform, admitting "We fell short" on meeting customer expectations and suggesting that consumers consider alternative mapping technologies while Apple strives to improve the service.

Apple launched Maps last week in conjunction with its new iOS 6 mobile operating system revamp. Developed in-house, Apple Maps replaces Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps, which had been a fixture of the iOS ecosystem since the first iPhone hit retail in mid-2007. But consumers have been harshly critical of Apple Maps, identifying dozens of inaccuracies including missing roads, misplaced landmarks and mislabeled businesses--some have even stopped using the service in favor of accessing Google Maps data via their iPhone or iPad's Safari browser.

"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook writes in a letter posted to Apple's website. "We wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up… Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard."

Cook adds that despite public outcry, more than 100 million iOS devices are using Apple Maps, with consumers already searching for close to 500 million locations. "The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you," Cook notes.

Cook suggests that while Apple works to improve Maps, iOS device owners should consider downloading native mapping applications like Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing, Waze or MapQuest, or "use Google or Nokia (NYSE:NOK) maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their Web app."

The status of a native Google Maps app for iOS is unknown. Earlier this week, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company has not taken any steps to submit a native solution to Apple's App Store but added the two companies are in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." Schmidt said that any decision on Google Maps' return to iOS or approval of a native app is in Apple's hands. "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours," he said. "But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

The New York Times reports Google is at work on a Maps app for iOS, although it is unlikely to surface for at least several months. Sources said Google was blindsided by Apple's move to end their mapping relationship and did not begin work on a native Maps app until after Apple publicly announced its own mapping service this June. In addition, Google is rumored to be readying a Google Maps with 3D imagery comparable to Apple's, but its own 3D technology exists separate from its Google Maps database as part of the Google Earth service, and combining the two will take some time.

2. Facebook unwraps m-commerce ambitions with Gifts platform

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is rolling out Gifts, a new service enabling users to purchase and send real-world items to their social network contacts.

Facebook Gifts

Facebook Gifts allows users to send real-world items to friends.

Launching on Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and the desktop, with a version optimized for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS coming within the next few weeks, Facebook Gifts builds on Karma, the mobile gifting platform acquired by the social networking giant in May. Facebook Gifts leverages birthday reminders and timeline events like engagement and wedding announcements to prompt users to purchase presents from more than 100 retail partners including Starbucks, 1-800-Flowers, Gund and Magnolia Bakery; all items are recommended based on the recipient's Facebook profile.

After the gift is selected, senders attach a card and mail the item directly to the recipient's address, choosing whether to post the gift to their friend's timeline or send it privately. The recipient may 'unwrap' a virtual preview of the item before it arrives on their doorstep, and he or she can also choose the color, size or flavor or exchange the product for something of equal value.

To complete a Facebook Gifts transaction, senders bill their purchase to a new or existing credit card saved to their Facebook account. Speaking to TechCrunch, Facebook Head of Gifts Lee Linden declined to divulge how much revenue the company claims on each transaction, explaining the terms vary by product and partner.

Facebook Gifts represents the social network's latest move to monetize its mobile platform. Earlier this week, Facebook and digital commerce partner Bango rolled out a new mobile Web billing service enabling consumers to purchase in-app goods and bill the transaction to their monthly wireless bill. Facebook is also trialing mobile advertisements across selected third-party iOS and Android applications, introducing banner and interstitial ads that direct consumers to mobile websites or app stores based on their profile and social media activities.

Facebook reported net losses of $157 million in the quarter ending June 30, its first as a public company, and vowed to right the ship with the introduction of new and improved mobile experiences. Facebook now boasts 955 million monthly active users worldwide, and 59 percent of that audience accesses the platform via mobile device. In addition, the number of Facebook users who accessed the site exclusively via mobile increased to 102 million in the second quarter, a 23 percent quarter-over-quarter leap.

3. Report: Amazon taking on Square, PayPal Here with m-payments reader

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Amazon is reportedly working on a mobile payments reader that would pit the digital commerce giant against services like Square and PayPal Here.

Citing both a tipster and an industry source, TechCrunch reports Amazon is pitching the m-commerce product to smaller retail chains, promising card processing fees as low as 1.9 percent. In comparison, Square offers merchants the choice between a 2.75 percent per-transaction fee or a flat $275 monthly charge, with no processing fee or additional costs, while PayPal Here charges businesses a flat rate of 2.7 percent per credit card or PayPal transaction--the new GrouponPayments, unveiled earlier this month, claims 1.8 percent plus $0.15 of each MasterCard, Visa and Discover transaction, and 3 percent/$0.15 of each American Express transaction.

Although an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the TechCrunch report, a mobile payments offering does appear to fit within the company's business model. Its Amazon Payments platform enables checkout and payments processing services for third-party sellers, and earlier this week, the company launched Amazon Lending, which supplies loans to retail partners who offer products via the Amazon platform.

With Walmart and Target stores no longer selling Amazon's Kindle e-readers and tablets, some onlookers have also speculated Amazon may open its own brick-and-mortar locations where shoppers can sample and purchase Kindle devices and other products. A proprietary mobile payments platform would enable Amazon to roll out in-store transaction services independent of traditional point-of-sale service providers.

Both Square and PayPal Here present formidable challenges, however. As of June 2012, more than 2 million businesses and individuals across the U.S. are using the Square service, up from 1 million just six months earlier--this month, the startup said it is now processing more than $8 billion in payments on an annualized basis, compared to $1 billion just a year ago. In addition, more than 300,000 merchants in the U.S. and Hong Kong have signed up for PayPal Here since the service launched this past March, with PayPal on pace to handle a combined $10 billion in payment transactions this year across all of its mobile initiatives.

4. Nokia extends Navteq map data to BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen vehicles

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) announced new partnerships with BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Hyundai to extend its Navteq mapping platform to the automakers' in-vehicle navigation systems.

Nokia will supply Navteq services including maps, routing information, driver alerts and speed limit guidance, tailoring packages for each partner. For example, BMW 7-series models will include Eco Pro Route, which leverages Navteq data to suggest routes that reduce fuel consumption by avoiding congestion and steep hills, while Nokia will provide Hyundai with technical support and customized marketing programs to increase navigation usage.

Nokia also trumpeted new agreements with consumer electronics manufacturer Pioneer, which will integrate Navteq location and commerce data into its navigation systems, as well as satellite navigation firm Garmin, which will tap Navteq transit and pedestrian content for its new Urban Guidance feature, introduced last week in Garmin's Navigon turn-by-turn apps for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone.

Nokia acquired Navteq for $8.1 billion in 2007. The device maker believes location data will play an increasingly critical role in all mobile communications moving forward and contends that its core Navteq assets--including turn-by-turn guidance information spanning 110 countries--put the company in a position to pose a legitimate challenge to Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), the top dog in location-enabled mobile services.

"For location to be meaningful, you need a map and a map platform--either you go in and spend multiple years creating that asset or you acquire that asset," said Nokia's Executive Vice President of Location and Commerce Michael Halbherr during a recent Nokia media event in Chicago. "Over the years we've built this asset, and that brings us into a very strong position. It's not something you can catch up to very quickly."

5. Bank of America spurns NFC for QR codes with new mobile payments pilot

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Bank of America is teaming with Paydiant for a new mobile payments pilot program that forgoes Near Field Communications technology in favor of QR code-based transactions.

The trial, launched across five merchant locations near Bank of America's Charlotte, N.C. corporate headquarters, enables smartphone-equipped shoppers to complete purchases by scanning a QR code displayed at the point of sale--Paydiant co-founder Chris Gardner tells Reuters that one restaurant participating in the trial is using codes printed on receipts, enabling diners to pay at their table and leave at their discretion. The Paydiant application completes the purchase by debiting Bank of America account information stored in the cloud.

Bank of America kicked off the trial last week and said it will run for three months. For now, the pilot is limited to Bank of America employees and is optimized for smartphones running Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android.

Bank of America rolled out an NFC-based mobile payments trial in New York City in mid-2010. Bank of America spokesperson Tara Burke declined to comment on whether the company is still considering using NFC, she but said it continues to monitor the segment. Apple recently launched its iPhone 5 without NFC support, prompting many onlookers to question whether the contactless technology will ever gain significant traction as a mobile payments option.

Paydiant offers cloud-based, white-label mobile payment solutions to banks, retailers and processors. All payment card numbers and cardholder data is stored in its PCI-compliant, SAS70-certified data center. Paydiant has raised $19.6 million in venture funding.
