T-Mobile sells towers to Crown Castle for $2.4B T-Mobile USA said it well the rights to 7,200 of its towers to Crown Castle for $2.4 billion. The deal is the culmination of months of speculation over a sale of the carrier's towers. In the past few months Crown Castle had emerged as the most likely bidder for the towers. T-Mobile said the sale will give it additional funds toward its ongoing $4 billion network modernization project. Under the terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter, Crown will have the exclusive right to lease and operate the T-Mobile towers for a weighted average term of around 28 years. Crown noted that 83 percent of the towers are located in the top 100 U.S. markets and 72 percent are located in the top 50 markets. The nation's No. 4 carrier has been looking to sell its towers as a way to raise funds since AT&T (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom aborted their plans late last year for AT&T to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion. "T-Mobile USA is working aggressively to make our 4G network stronger, faster and more dependable for consumers, and this transaction will support our ongoing $4 billion network modernization initiative that is the cornerstone of this effort as we work tirelessly to continue to deliver our amazing 4G services nationwide," T-Mobile CEO John Legere said in a statement. Crown Castle CEO Ben Moreland said in a statement that the deal will increase Crown's tower count by approximately 33 percent, and that Crown will hold around 30,000 towers when the deal is closed. Crown Castle said it expects to fund the transaction with cash on hand and debt financing. T-Mobile is working to deploy LTE network technology by next year. Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks are the vendors for T-Mobile's $4 billion network upgrade project. The carrier plans to deploy LTE on its 1700 MHz AWS spectrum and refarm its 1900 MHz PCS spectrum for HSPA+ service. RIM ships 7.4M BlackBerrys, earnings please Wall Street BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) announced better-than-expected financials, sending the company's stock up slightly in after-hours trading immediately following the release of its quarterly report. The company also said it shipped 7.4 million BlackBerry smartphones in its fiscal second quarter and 130,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets. The figures were down sharply from a year ago when it shipped 13.2 million smartphones and 500,000 PlayBooks, as well as down from the fiscal first quarter when it had 7.8 million smartphone and 260,000 PlayBook shipments. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins noted on the company's earnings conference call that "the entire company is energized and excited" for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the first quarter of 2013. He said he and other RIM executives have met with dozens of carriers in 16 countries to sell them on BB10. He said RIM's teams are working "night and day" to meet the expectations RIM and its customers have for the new platform. Heins said that as part of the company's strategic review he has been meeting with many unnamed organizations to talk about potential partnership and licensing opportunities of BB10 and other BlackBerry technologies. Heins did not provide any details on the timeline for completion of the process but that RIM's board is taking the review seriously. The company's results are notable considering the black cloud that continues to hang over RIM. The company has suffered from anemic sales in North America and Europe (though it has enjoyed modest success in markets in Asian, the Middle East and elsewhere) and it recently delayed the release of its revamped BlackBerry 10 operating system until the first quarter of next year. RIM is counting on its BB10 platform to rekindle interest in BlackBerry products, though investors worry that the Canadian smartphone vendor won't be able to compete against the likes of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android smartphones and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 gadgets. As for its financials, RIM reported revenue for the second quarter of $2.9 billion, up 2 percent from the previous quarter but down 31 percent from the same quarter last year. Sales outside of the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada made up 58 percent of revenue in the quarter. RIM's net loss for the quarter was $235 million, down from $329 million than in the year-ago period. The net loss and drop in revenue were less than some investors had feared, and the situation sent RIM's shares up around 2 percent in after-hours trading to $7.14. "Encouraging financial results from RIM--looks like they can tread water until BlackBerry 10 next year," Tweeted Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart. Looking ahead, RIM said it expects continued pressure due to "the increasing competitive environment, lower handset volumes, increased marketing expense associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and some impact from pressure by customers to reduce RIM's monthly infrastructure access fees." RIM said it also plans to continue to invest in targeted marketing and sales programs--likely including price cuts--to push sales of legacy BlackBerry 7 handheld devices before BB10 launches. The company said it expects to report an operating loss in its fiscal third quarter as it completes its cost cutting program. The program is designed to save RIM $1 billion in the current fiscal year. As part of the program, RIM plans to cut 5,000 jobs. During RIM's Blackberry Jam Americas developer conference earlier this week in San Jose, Calif., Heins and other RIM executives showed off a few of RIM's BlackBerry 10 features. The platform will offer BlackBerry Flow, which allows users to scroll seamlessly between apps; BlackBerry Peek, which allows users to glance at another application without leaving the one a user is currently running; and BlackBerry Hub, which combines various notifications and messages into one inbox. And as part of the company's efforts to bolster its BlackBerry 10 ecosystem, RIM said Facebook, Twitter and other popular social networking apps have promised to build BlackBerry 10 apps. Earlier this week RIM's marketing chief Frank Boulben gave Bloomberg some hints about how RIM will roll out BB10. He said the company will conduct a "progressive reveal" of the platform to business executives and technology press before a splashy launch event early next year. RIM plans to offer a handful of BB10 models with both touchscreens and Qwerty keyboards, and Boulben said RIM expects to be selling BB10 phones in roughly two dozen markets by the end of the first quarter. He said some carriers will begin testing the phones next month, though he didn't provide specifics. In other RIM news, CrackBerry posted what it said are pictures of RIM's planned BlackBerry 10 phones, the L Series and N series devices. One gadget sports a Qwerty keyboard and the other is a full touchscreen device. FCC gives details for 2014 auction of broadcast spectrum for mobile broadband WASHINGTON--The FCC voted to begin setting rules that will govern voluntary incentive auctions of broadcast TV spectrum for mobile broadband use. The FCC voted 5-0 to begin the march toward the auctions and opened the proposed rules for public comment, a process that is expected to draw heavy comments from wireless carriers and broadcasters. The final rules are expected in 2013. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said that the incentive auctions will be the first of their kind in the world. He called the proposed rules a "strong, thoughtful, thorough and pathbreaking" effort. The auctions, which CTIA and the wireless industry have been advocating for years, were authorized in legislation Congress passed and President Obama signed in February. The auctions are expected to take place in 2014 and will be the first major auction of spectrum since the 700 MHz auction in 2008. The incentive auctions are a major piece of the FCC's goal of freeing up 300 MHz of spectrum by 2015 and 500 MHz by 2020 to meet increasing mobile data demands; the FCC's national broadband plan called up for up 120 MHz of broadcast spectrum to be auctioned. The rulemaking seeks comment on plans for the auction of broadcast spectrum as well as rules for how wireless carriers will bid on the spectrum. Additionally, the proceeding outlines specifics on how remaining broadcasters will be moved off the spectrum, a process often referred to as "repacking." Broadcasters are expected to have significant input on the plan. Under the FCC's proposed rules, broadcasters will submit bids to relinquish their 6 MHz pieces of spectrum in a reverse auction where the FCC will pay them. The FCC's band plan for the broadcast spectrum carriers would use calls for 5 MHz blocks. The process is voluntary for broadcasters, but many worry that broadcasters might not give up their spectrum based to their previous resistance to the auctions. After broadcasters give up their spectrum, it will be "repacked" so that broadcasters that do not give up their spectrum can stay on the air. Then the FCC will conduct a traditional "forward" auction in which carriers will bid for the freed spectrum. The FCC anticipates that there will be 6 MHz guardbands to separate spectrum blocks used by carriers, and that the "white space" between the blocks will be open for unlicensed use. "Since spectrum is a finite resource, we're pleased the Commission has begun the process of establishing the rules that will fulfill the goals of the recently adopted, bipartisan spectrum legislation," said CTIA President and CEO Steve Largent. "While spectrum fuels the wireless industry's 'virtuous cycle' of innovation and competition, its impact on the nation's economy is also significant. Analysts estimate that bringing 500 MHz of spectrum to market will increase U.S. GDP by $166 billion, add at least 350,000 new U.S. jobs, generate an additional $23.4 billion in government revenues and result in a $13.1 billion increase in wireless applications and content sales." In the legislation passed in February, Congress said that $7 billion raised from the auction should be used to help construct a nationwide, interoperable broadband network for public safety, meaning the FCC will try and design an auction that raises more money than that. Republican FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell urged "regulatory humility and restraints" for what he said was the most complex undertaking the FCC has started since he came to the FCC. "It's like moving from 2-Dimensional chess to 3-Dimensional chess and perhaps 3-Dimensional chess while blindfolded," he said. McDowell said the FCC should be mindful not to impose spectrum caps that might prohibit certain carriers--likely a reference to AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ)--from participating in the auctions. Rumor Mill: MetroPCS eyeing Dish, T-Mobile and Sprint as potential suitors MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) is once again shopping around for a potential merger partner and talking with T-Mobile USA, Dish Network and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), according to DealReporter. The report, which cites an unnamed source close to the matter, said that MetroPCS' conversations with some of the potential suitors have been ongoing, while others were just "off and on." None of the parties involved would comment on the report. The source said that any MetroPCS deal would consist of both stock and cash. However, the source also cautioned that there is still no assurance that a deal will actually happen as the conversations are not at the negotiation stage as of yet. MetroPCS has long been considered an appealing acquisition target because it has a healthy balance sheet and there are considerable synergies with the potential suitors. Earlier this month, Goldman Sachs analyst Jason Armstrong hinted that Sprint might purchase MetroPCS because of Sprint's rising stock price. A Sprint merger with MetroPCS would be less technically complicated than one with T-Mobile, since T-Mobile's network is based on GSM and HSPA+ technology and MetroPCS is a CDMA carrier like Sprint. Sprint was reportedly close to finalizing a deal with MetroPCS earlier this year but that deal was killed by Sprint's board; Sprint has never confirmed or discussed any of the reports about the MetroPCS deal. A MetroPCS deal with Dish, on the other hand, would give Dish an existing wireless network to bundle with its wireless spectrum. Dish currently owns 40 MHz of S-band spectrum--specifically from 2000-2020 MHz and 2180-2200 MHz. Dish hopes to launch an LTE Advanced network with its spectrum by 2016, but is awaiting rules from the FCC on its spectrum as well as word on whether the FCC will shift its holdings at 2000-2020 MHz up 5 MHz to 2005-2025 MHz. Apple CEO Cook apologizes for Maps, suggests alternatives Bing, Waze Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has issued a public apology for the company's new Maps platform, admitting "We fell short" on meeting customer expectations and suggesting that consumers consider alternative mapping technologies while Apple strives to improve the service. Apple launched Maps last week in conjunction with its new iOS 6 mobile operating system revamp. Developed in-house, Apple Maps replaces Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps, which had been a fixture of the iOS ecosystem since the first iPhone hit retail in mid-2007. But consumers have been harshly critical of Apple Maps, identifying dozens of inaccuracies including missing roads, misplaced landmarks and mislabeled businesses--some have even stopped using the service in favor of accessing Google Maps data via their iPhone or iPad's Safari browser. "We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook writes in a letter posted to Apple's website. "We wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up… Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard." Cook adds that despite public outcry, more than 100 million iOS devices are using Apple Maps, with consumers already searching for close to 500 million locations. "The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you," Cook notes. Cook suggests that while Apple works to improve Maps, iOS device owners should consider downloading native mapping applications like Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing, Waze or MapQuest, or "use Google or Nokia (NYSE:NOK) maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their Web app." The status of a native Google Maps app for iOS is unknown. Earlier this week, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company has not taken any steps to submit a native solution to Apple's App Store but added the two companies are in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." Schmidt said that any decision on Google Maps' return to iOS or approval of a native app is in Apple's hands. "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours," he said. "But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call." The New York Times reports Google is at work on a Maps app for iOS, although it is unlikely to surface for at least several months. Sources said Google was blindsided by Apple's move to end their mapping relationship and did not begin work on a native Maps app until after Apple publicly announced its own mapping service this June. In addition, Google is rumored to be readying a Google Maps with 3D imagery comparable to Apple's, but its own 3D technology exists separate from its Google Maps database as part of the Google Earth service, and combining the two will take some time.
