<p>Bravo to NBC News for doing separate interviews with President Obama (Savannah Guthrie) and Governor Romney (Brian Williams) on their education policies and philosophies.</p>
<p>There have been precious few interviews with the presidential candidates as substantive, deep, interesting, and far reaching as these on ANY topics all campaign long.</p>
<p>And what’s additionally great about these interviews is that they well illustrate a reality of Obama and Romney that has been largely masked in this superficial campaign: both these guys are policy wonks who can talk fluidly about many areas of public policy, including education.</p>

<li>I reluctantly accept the reality that Bill Clinton is a huge factor in this presidential race and has a bond with the American people I never will.</li>
<li>I know voters have no idea what programs I would pursue as president starting in January and/but I have no plans to be any more specific before Election Day.</li>
<li>I resent all the criticism I get during challenging periods, and often am goaded into defensiveness.</li>
<li>I am going to make it through the entire four-year cycle of my presidential campaign without firing anyone of any significance, or even shaking up responsibilities.</li>
<li>I let my campaign constantly try to drive the news cycle by taking something my opponent said and brutally wrenching it from context — but find it outrageous when the other side does that to me.</li>
<li>I care less about super PAC spending than I used to.</li>
<li>I wish more political reporters were like Dan Balz.</li>
<li>I have a lot better chance to get the deficit under control than my opponent does if the voters choose me in November.</li>
<li>I would rather spend time with my wife and kids than do anything else.</li>
<li>Except maybe play around on my iPad.</li>

<p>The consensus result of the highly unscientific survey I did of various sharpies after Mitt Romney’s speech at the Bill Clinton confab: better, more genuine performance than usual; funny opening joke (referencing 42); presidential demeanor; and/but still a bit stiff; failure to drive a newsy message, and not good enough to win with.</p>
<p>Continuing my inability to escape talking to people who think the election is (all but) over — the Sheraton hallways are filled with folks deeply skeptical that a Romney comeback is possible.</p>

<p>My “Morning Joe” colloquy with David Axelrod in which he suggests the time for details is later:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: David, Social Security came up last night on “60 Minutes.” Let me ask you, in a second term, what is the President proposing to do to reform Social Security, save it for future generations, and will it involve lower benefits for anyone or higher taxes for anyone?</p>
<p><strong>AXELROD</strong>: Well, I think, you know, there too, Mark, the approach has to be a balanced one. We’ve had this, we’ve had discussions in the past and the question is, can you raise the cap? Right now, Social Security cuts off at a lower point. Can you raise the cap so people paying a little more, the upper incomes are paying a little more into the program and do you adjust the growth of the program? That’s a discussion worth having. But, again, we have to approach it in a balanced way. You can’t, you know, we’re not going to cut our way to prosperity. We’re not going to cut our way to more secure entitlement programs — Social Security and Medicare. We have to have a balance.</p>
<p><strong>HALPERIN</strong>: What’s his proposal?</p>
<p><strong>AXELROD</strong>: Mark, I’ll tell you what. When you get elected to the United States Senate, we’ll sit at that table. We’ll have — this is not the time. We’re not going to have that discussion right now unless the Congress wants to sit at a table and say, OK, we’re ready to move on a balanced approach to this. The reality of Social Security is this is a much less imminent problem than Medicare and so this is not, you know. Medicare, we’ve extended the life of Medicare by close to a decade through the changes that we’ve made and Governor Romney wants to repeal. But Social Security is a more distant problem, one that needs a solution, but it isn’t as pressing as the Medicare issue.</p></blockquote>
<p>So the President’s position on Social Security seems to be the same as Mitt Romney’s on tax deduction changes — there should be no real details or debate to inform voters before the election.</p>
