Facebook halts mobile ad trials in third-party iOS, Android apps Three months after Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) began trialing mobile advertisements across selected third-party iOS and Android applications, the social networking giant is slamming the brakes on the initiative. "While the results we have seen and the feedback from partners has been positive, our focus is on scaling ads in mobile news feed before ads off of Facebook," a Facebook spokesperson told Mashable. "We have learned a lot from this test that will be useful in the future." Sources told All Things D that Facebook also has halted plans to run ads across publisher partners' mobile sites, explaining that publishers remain concerned that Facebook is not yet ready to deliver external mobile ads capable of generating significant value for the social network or its partners. That belief is driven at least in part by the relatively low rates Facebook commands for ads across its own platform. One publisher said that while rival ad networks like Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) have gained traction by offering publishers a guaranteed revenue threshold regardless of ad performance, Facebook has not yet proposed similar terms, instead discussing a "generous" revenue split. In mid-September, Facebook began testing in-app banner and interstitial ads directing consumers to mobile sites or app stores based on the user's profile and social media activities. Reports indicated Facebook synced its anonymous user IDs with several mobile ad exchanges--when a Facebook user visited an app or site where an exchange partner has placements, the exchange instantly transmitted the user ID back to Facebook to determine whether an advertiser had bid on inventory targeting the consumer's particular demographic profile. If so, Facebook paid the ad exchange some portion of the bid, and the ad was displayed to the user. "Showing mobile ads outside of Facebook is another great way for people to see relevant ads and discover new apps," Facebook said at that time, noting the mobile ad rollout represented a "small test" and declining to identify which or how many advertisers and publishers were participating in the trial. Facebook also declined to respond to questions regarding whether the trial was intended as a precursor to a full-fledged mobile ad network. In recent months, Facebook has also introduced new mobile ad units designed to drive iOS and Android app installs by targeting consumers based on the apps and games they already access on their smartphones. Developers select their intended audience demographic, budget and method of payment, and Facebook inserts ads for their apps directly into targeted users' mobile news feeds. Earlier this week, Facebook overhauled the program on iOS, enabling iOS 6 device users to initiate downloads directly from Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store by clicking a dialog box, avoiding disruptions to the Facebook experience. Facebook now touts more than 1 billion users worldwide, with roughly 600 million accessing its services via mobile. As of the third quarter of 2012, mobile initiatives generate 14 percent of the company's total advertising revenues. Forecast: Windows Phone shipments in 2017 will match iOS shipments in 2012 The number of Windows Phone-powered devices shipping worldwide in 2017 will match the number of iOS units shipped by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in 2012, according to a new Analysys Mason forecast. Although Analysys Mason believes Windows Phone will grow faster than any other smartphone operating system over the next five years, growing from 11 million units in 2011 to 136 million units by 2017, the Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) platform will still account for only 9 percent of global smartphone shipments at the end of the forecast period, behind iOS at 23 percent. Analysys Mason adds that Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android will account for 58 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide by the end of 2013, but its growth will remain stagnant for the remainder of the forecast period in the absence of other platforms from which it can capture additional market share. "Having a third significant OS player like Windows in the smartphone market would benefit mobile operators because it would reduce Apple's and Google's control over the market," said Ronan de Renesse, principal analyst for Analysys Mason's mobile broadband and devices research program. "It would also encourage subscribers to move from one OS to another, as well as improve operators' negotiating position in smartphone retail." Analysys Mason anticipates that total smartphone connections will grow nearly threefold in the next five years, reaching 3.4 billion in 2017. Smartphone shipments will leap from 700 million in 2012 (translating to 41.2 percent of total handset shipments) to 1.37 billion by the end of 2017 (70 percent of total shipments). The firm also believes that smartphone upgrades will drive three out of every four smartphone purchases by 2017, compared to less than half of all purchases in 2012. "This will create a significant strategy shift for stakeholders," de Renesse said. "Operators will have to increase the value of smartphone contracts by offering early handset upgrades and larger data allowances to retain customers, and handset vendors will have to develop stronger app and content ecosystems (as Apple has done) in order to increase loyalty." Rhapsody inks joint billing deal with AT&T, launches iPad app Rhapsody announced a joint billing agreement with AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), enabling subscribers to add its on-demand digital music services to their monthly wireless bill. Rhapsody previously signed a similar deal with Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ). Rhapsody offers unlimited, ad-free streaming access to more than 16 million tracks alongside artist interviews, editorial reviews and playlist tools. Subscribers can choose between two premium options: Rhapsody Premier, priced at $9.99 per month, supports listening on one device, while Premier Plus, priced at $14.99 per month, allows access on three different devices. Rhapsody supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry platforms, as well as most MP3 players, PC, Mac, home audio systems, TiVo set-top boxes and Vizio TVs. The AT&T billing agreement follows days after Rhapsody rolled out a new application optimized for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and new iPad mini. The free app offers tablet owners access to the complete Rhapsody library, spotlighting new releases as well as the most popular songs and performers across more than 600 genres. Subscribers can also access their playlists and libraries, build new playlists and download favorite tracks for offline listening. Rhapsody reports that mobile devices accounted for 51 percent of all tracks played in 2012, up from 27 percent a year ago. Fifty-six percent of all Rhapsody subscribers now access the service via mobile, compared to 38 percent in 2011; in addition, 42 percent of customers listen exclusively on mobile devices. Nokia pushes Portico software update to AT&T Lumia smartphones Nokia (NYSE:NOK) is releasing a new software update optimized for its Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920 and 820 smartphones, first rolling out via AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) in the U.S. and Rogers in Canada. Highlights of the update, codenamed "Portico," include improvements designed to eliminate issues causing photos snapped with Lumia 920 devices to appear fuzzy. Earlier this week, Engadget obtained two sets of identical images snapped with two Lumia 920 handsets--one with the existing firmware, the other running the new update--and noted dramatic differences between the two. The Portico upgrade also touts Messaging enhancements enabling users to add multiple recipients at the same time when sending a text. Lumia phones now automatically save unsent text messages as drafts, and users may also edit received text messages before forwarding them. Additional enhancements include more efficient and reliable Bluetooth connectivity and improved battery management. "In most cases, your phone will alert you that a software update is available," writes Nokia Conversations editor Jason Harris. "To accept the update, you will only need to follow a few simple prompts. If you'd like to manually check to see the update is available for your Lumia 820 or Lumia 920, go to Settings → Phone Update → Check For Updates… The process can take a while (about 30 minutes), so please be patient." Nokia adds that the Portico update will roll out to Lumia smartphones in other international markets beginning in Feb. 2013. Twitter promotes Ali Rowghani to COO, Mike Gupta named CFO Twitter is shuffling its executive ranks, promoting Ali Rowghani from chief financial officer to chief operating officer and naming Mike Gupta to fill the vacated CFO seat. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo--who served as COO prior to taking over the top spot in Oct. 2010--confirmed the appointments Wednesday evening via tweet. Rowghani joined Twitter in 2010 after close to a decade at Disney's Pixar, serving as the animation unit's CFO for roughly half of that time. All Things D reports that during his Twitter stint, Rowghani assumed greater operational responsibilities than the average CFO, most notably helping spearhead the expansion of the microblogging platform's premium advertising efforts. Gupta arrived at Twitter just last month, signing on as vice president of corporate finance and treasurer after a year as treasurer at beleaguered social gaming firm Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA). Prior to joining the Zynga team, Gupta spent eight years at Yahoo, where he played a key role in finalizing search and online deals with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). Gupta is one of several high-profile Twitter executive hires in 2012: This summer, the company named Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) veteran Richard Alfonsi vice president of global online sales, and SAY Media alum Michael Sippey joined as vice president of consumer products. Twitter also brought aboard two new vice presidents of engineering: Chris Fry (hired from Salesforce.com) and Adam Messinger (poached from Oracle). The Twitter ranks now include more than 1,500 staffers in all. Twitter also is saying goodbye to Vice President of Growth Othman Laraki, who announced his resignation Wednesday, shortly after the firm said that monthly active users now top 200 million worldwide. Laraki did not disclose his future plans. WhatsApp promotion cuts iPhone app price to free Cross-platform messaging service WhatsApp is slashing the price of its Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS application from 99 cents to free as part of holiday promotion. WhatsApp announced the discount via Twitter but did not disclose how long the offer will remain available. WhatsApp enables users to share text messages, voice notes, photos and videos with contacts across the globe, without international messaging fees; in addition to iOS, the platform is optimized for Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, serving a reported 100 million daily active users across more than 100 international markets and 750 mobile networks. Last month, advisory firm Analysys Mason called WhatsApp "the first large-scale cross-platform messaging app," noting that more than 45 percent of all smartphone owners now use some form of instant messaging or over-the-top messaging app in addition to or instead of traditional SMS.
