A/B testing begins rolling into mobile app market A/B testing is a concept that has been popularized within marketing departments as a way of rationalizing decisions around advertising. And the approach is quickly making its way into the world of mobile apps. Earlier this month Amazon launched the beta version of an SDK designed to assist developers with A/B testing, which is available free of charge. Other developers, like Concrete Software, an Eden Prairie, Minn.-based developer that created the game Wordplosion, are turning to A/B testing to fine-tune their apps and decide which parameters work best. Ericsson to take $1.2B charge in Q4 related to ST-Ericsson venture Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) said it will take a $1.2 billion charge in the fourth quarter related to its money-losing chipset joint venture with STMicroelectronics, ST-Ericsson, as it explores future options for the company. The write-down comes less than two weeks after STMicroelectronics said it will sell off its stake in ST-Ericsson, which STMicro expects to complete during the third quarter of 2013. In a statement Ericsson said the charge is related to writing down its assets to reflect Ericsson's best guess of how much its share of ST-Ericsson is worth as well as additional charges related to strategic options for the joint venture. Ericsson reiterated its belief that its modem technology, which it originally contributed to the JV, "has a strategic value for the wireless industry." The vendor said it will push ST-Ericsson to release its LTE modems to the market. However, Ericsson ruled out buying STMicro's share of the venture. The Swedish vendor said it will not speculate on the timing or nature of strategic options for ST-Ericsson. "We will pursue and look into all strategic options we have for the assets," Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg told Bloomberg Television. "We will not exclude anything but of course our prime focus is to get a good solution and that is not the best solution to shut it down." Analysts think that ST-Ericsson's modem business might be sold to a competitor. "Two thousand jobs are at risk whatever the scenario," Jerome Ramel, an analyst at Exane BNP Paribas, told Reuters. In October, Ericsson and STMicro confirmed that they had hired an outside advisor, which reports have identified as the bank JP Morgan, to advise them on possible options for ST-Ericsson, including a sale. In the third quarter ST-Ericsson posted an adjusted operating loss of $148 million on revenue of $359 million. In April, ST-Ericsson said it would cut 1,700 jobs and transfer the development of its standalone applications processor business to STMicro. ST-Ericsson said at the time it would still focus on chipsets for smartphones and tablets--specifically the integration of baseband and applications processor platforms. The company sells an integrated chipset product called NovaThor. RIM's cash, BlackBerry subscriber numbers in focus ahead of earnings Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) will report its last quarterly earnings before the launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform after the market closes today, and financial analysts will be looking for hints that it has momentum and enough cash on hand to not only get past the launch but make it a success. When RIM reports its fiscal third-quarter results, analysts will be looking at RIM's cash balance as well as possible BlackBerry subscriber growth. The company may also divulge details about the support it has received so far from carriers for the new platform, on which it is staking its future. So far this week Rogers Wireless in Canada and the four main operators in the United Kingdom have indicated their support for BB10. Still, the company is expected to report financial losses amid weaker sales. Revenue is expected to fall to $2.7 billion, down 49 percent from its $5.3 billion in the year-ago period, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. The focus will be on whether RIM has the resources, momentum and moxie to make an impact with BlackBerry 10. RIM plans to hold simultaneous events in New York, London, Dubai and other cities on Jan. 30 to launch the platform. In order to market the platform, RIM will need to burn through cash, which could worry analysts. The company had about $2.3 billion in cash on hand at the end of its fiscal second quarter. "Cash is king heading into the BB10 product launch...and a [subscriber] base for future upgrades is the next most important factor," Kris Thompson, an analyst at National Bank of Canada, wrote in a research note to clients this week, according to the Wall Street Journal. In addition to cash, the focus will be on RIM's BlackBerry subscriber base. RIM revealed in late September that it had added 2 million more subscribers to its BlackBerry service, which boosted its shares and gave analysts hope that RIM could make a comeback, since many had expected the firm's subscriber base to decline in advance of the BB10 launch. Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, told the AP that he expects subscriber growth to be flat this quarter and that it would be a negative sign if RIM lost subscribers. "It's one of the reasons while people still have a lot of hope in that platform," he said. "They still have 80 million users. That's a big number." BlackBerry 10 is a full redesign of RIM's existing BlackBerry operating system. The new platform features a new user interface, BlackBerry Flow, which allows users to scroll seamlessly between apps. BlackBerry Peek allows users to glance at another application without leaving the one a user is currently running. And BlackBerry Hub combines users' various inboxes, messages and notifications. Analysts have praised early versions of the platform that they have seen, but RIM has not revealed all of the details of the software. The company has said more than 50 operators worldwide have been testing the platform and the new smartphones it will run. Still, RIM faces an uphill climb in regaining market share and mindshare, especially with a brand new platform. RIM saw its global smartphone market share decline to 5.3 percent in the third quarter, according to research firm Gartner, down from 11 percent in the year-ago period. The challenge will be to convert existing BlackBerry customers to the new platform as well as attract non-BlackBerry users with the new hardware. "Any time a company comes closer to a product launch or revitalization there is enthusiasm in front of that," Gillis said. "The problem is execution, in terms of acceptance in the market place, is front of them." Samsung, Apple forge ahead with new operations in Texas Samsung Electronics said it will proceed with a $3.9 billion investment to expand its chipset production facility in Austin, Texas. According to Reuters, the investment will be used to expand system-chip production lines. Samsung manufactures many of the chips that go into Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) products like the iPhone, though Apple designs the silicon in-house. The investment is not exactly a surprise though. Reuters reported in August that Samsung was looking to finalize the investment into expanded chip production in Texas. The Austin facility reached its current full production level in December 2011 and Reuters had reported then that nearly all of the non-memory output at the 1.6 million-square-foot plant is dedicated to Apple chips. (Samsung also produces NAND flash memory chips in Austin.) According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) led the smartphone application processor market in both unit and revenue terms in the first half of 2011. Samsung, MediaTek, Broadcom and Texas Instruments, in that order, took the rest of the top five rankings. Meanwhile, according to a Wired report, Apple is breaking ground in Austin on a new 39-acre campus that will eventually house the company's America's Operations Center. The report noted that Apple already has an operations center in Austin, which employs about 3,500 hardware engineers, support staff and operations employees. However, the new campus will add another 1 million square feet of office space and within 10 years could bring in another 3,600 jobs for the company. "The company requires an operational center to centralize various functions, such as accounting, human resources and finance," Apple wrote in a plan for the $287 million project, filed with city planners, the report said. Forecast: Windows Phone shipments in 2017 will match iOS shipments in 2012 The number of Windows Phone-powered devices shipping worldwide in 2017 will match the number of iOS units shipped by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in 2012, according to a new Analysys Mason forecast. Although Analysys Mason believes Windows Phone will grow faster than any other smartphone operating system over the next five years, growing from 11 million units in 2011 to 136 million units by 2017, the Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) platform will still account for only 9 percent of global smartphone shipments at the end of the forecast period, behind iOS at 23 percent. Analysys Mason adds that Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android will account for 58 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide by the end of 2013, but its growth will remain stagnant for the remainder of the forecast period in the absence of other platforms from which it can capture additional market share. "Having a third significant OS player like Windows in the smartphone market would benefit mobile operators because it would reduce Apple's and Google's control over the market," said Ronan de Renesse, principal analyst for Analysys Mason's mobile broadband and devices research program. "It would also encourage subscribers to move from one OS to another, as well as improve operators' negotiating position in smartphone retail." Analysys Mason anticipates that total smartphone connections will grow nearly threefold in the next five years, reaching 3.4 billion in 2017. Smartphone shipments will leap from 700 million in 2012 (translating to 41.2 percent of total handset shipments) to 1.37 billion by the end of 2017 (70 percent of total shipments). The firm also believes that smartphone upgrades will drive three out of every four smartphone purchases by 2017, compared to less than half of all purchases in 2012. "This will create a significant strategy shift for stakeholders," de Renesse said. "Operators will have to increase the value of smartphone contracts by offering early handset upgrades and larger data allowances to retain customers, and handset vendors will have to develop stronger app and content ecosystems (as Apple has done) in order to increase loyalty." AT&T, Boingo Wireless will help WBA foster Wi-Fi roaming AT&T (NYSE:T), China Mobile and hotspot aggregator Boingo Wireless are among companies signing onto an initiative aimed at creating technical and commercial frameworks to advance Wi-Fi roaming across different service providers' networks. The Interoperability Compliancy Program (ICP) is being introduced by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), which hopes to reduce fragmentation in the way devices connect to and roam onto Wi-Fi networks. The ICP aims to align guidelines for operators regarding security, data offload, device authentication, network implementation, network selection, charging models and billing mechanisms. The ICP also will outline guidelines for operators with different support levels. "These range from simple integration requirements for roaming partners, to delivering support for the latest in session security, to more complex charging models and billing mechanisms required for the implementation of Next Generation Hotspots (NGH)," said the WBA. Other companies confirming their participation in the program include the United Kingdom's BT, Korea Telecom, Japan's NTT DoCoMo, Hong Kong's PCCW, Canada's Shaw Communications, the Philippines' Smart Communications and Thailand's True. "The ICP helps players across the Wi-Fi ecosystem work together to deliver a more simplified roaming experience. By encouraging our members to go that extra mile to expedite interoperability, consumers worldwide will benefit from a far superior connectivity experience wherever they are," said WBA CEO Shrikant Shenwai. In parallel with the launch of the ICP, the WBA released its Wi-Fi Roaming Guidelines, a guide to help operators develop a Wi-Fi roaming business based on the WBA's Wireless Roaming Intermediary Exchange (WRIX).The WBA said it also is offering service providers a "Wi-Fi Roaming Compliancy Check," which can be used promote their compliancy and roaming capabilities. Despite endorsements, Sony's Xperia smartphones struggle to break through Sony Mobile Communications has been around for less than a year as a business, but it has already scored some major endorsements. Daniel Craig's James Bond sports Sony's Xperia T smartphone in "Skyfall," while Andrew Garfield's title character in "The Amazing Spider-Man" uses an Xperia X10 Mini Pro. Despite the high-profile endorsements though, Sony Mobile's smartphones have yet to break through, much as the former Sony Ericsson struggled. Still, the company is not giving up, and plans to boost smartphone sales 51 percent to 34 million units in the year ending March 31. The company is accelerating smartphone development and working to integrate other elements from Sony's electronics and media businesses. According to ABI Research, Sony was the No. 8 handset maker worldwide in the third quarter, behind the likes of Huawei and TCL. Meanwhile, Sony is reportedly planning a 5-inch 1080p phone codenamed Yuga, and may unveil it at the Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress.
