Social media integration is critical, yet time-consuming for developers Social media integration is quickly becoming a critical part of the app experience as Facebook and Twitter increase their presence on mobile devices. According to a research study published by Nielsen and NM Incite last month, the use of social media mobile apps grew 63 percent in 2012 compared with the same period the previous year. However, having to manually write the code that will authenticate users via third-party services, sync friend and profile data and share it with those services can be a time-consuming task. A San Francisco-based startup, Singly, wants to change that and last month it released an SDK into open beta that promises to accelerate the process in a matter of hours. Next week in Las Vegas tens of thousands of technology and mobile executives, professionals and enthusiasts will gather for the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show. As in recent years, the wireless industry will have a significant presence at the show, but from what I'm hearing from analysts and insiders there may be less of a bang at this show than in years past. There will certainly still be plenty of gadget unveilings and network demonstrations, but the nature of the show seems to be evolving. I think the industry should expect less of a hardware-centric show and one more focused on the somewhat amorphous term of "consumer experience." Handset makers, chipset firms, network vendors and carriers are all trying to get their arms around, explain and promote the idea that their hardware and networks are more than feeds, speeds and specs, and that they actually enable experiences that are meaningful for the people who use them. | Click here for Fierce's complete coverage of this year's Consumer Electronics Show. | Granted, they have been trying to do this for years, with middling success, but a confluence of factors has me convinced this may be the year that CES actually focuses more on the consumer experience than actual consumer electronics. First, from a mobile device perspective, it looks like this show will be light on major announcements. Samsung Electronics is likely to focus on its TV business and other parts of its electronics empire--according to a December CNET report, we shouldn't expect a major announcement like the Galaxy S IV. And In the absence of major launches from established players like HTC, LG Electronics and Nokia (NYSE:NOK), Chinese vendors ZTE and Huawei appear poised to steal some of the spotlight. ZTE is expected to announce the 5-inch Grand S Android while Huawei will probably announce the massive 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. For its part, Sony Mobile Communications will probably unveil new Xperia Android phones. Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is obviously keeping its powder dry for its Jan. 30 unveiling of BlackBerry 10, and many companies appear to either be waiting for Mobile World Congress in late February to make major device announcements or are planning to host their own events to kickoff new products. If there are fewer device announcements at CES, what will fill the void?...Continued More Read more about: T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, consumer experience, Smartphones back to top | | Sponsor: Aricent FierceLive! HTC's Chou vows to improve marketing, innovation in 2013 HTC CEO Peter Chou laid much of the blame for the smartphone maker's woes in 2012 on the back of weak and poorly executed marketing. He said the company will revive its fortunes in 2013 by being more innovative, nimble and focused in its marketing efforts. | Chou | In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Chou said the company faced intense competition and failed to aggressively market its products. The company's flagship One series of products failed to ignite sales, with revenue falling for four consecutive quarters year-over-year as of the third quarter of 2012. HTC focused its marketing for that product line on the phones' camera and audio capabilities, with buzzwords like "amazing camera" and "authentic sound" to highlight image quality and sharing features and Beats audio technology. "The worst for HTC has probably passed. 2013 will not be too bad," Chou said. "Our competitors were too strong and very resourceful, pouring in lots of money into marketing," he added. "We haven't done enough on the marketing front." In November HTC named Benjamin Ho as its new CMO and he reports directly Chou. Previously, Ho served as vice president of business strategy and marketing at Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecommunications, and before that as vice president and CMO at Motorola Asia Pacific. HTC's Jason Mackenzie, who had served as president of global sales and marketing, will focus on HTC's global sales strategy. Former CMO John Wang left the company in December. HTC has been trying to fend off Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung at the high end and the likes of ZTE and Huawei at the low end of the market. HTC's global smartphone market share has declined from 10.3 percent in the third quarter of 2011 to 4 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to IDC. In the third quarter, HTC reported a 79 percent decline in profit and a 48 percent drop in revenue; profits declined to their lowest level in six years. "Although we don't have as much money to counter [Samsung and Apple], the most important thing is to have unique products that appeal to consumers," Chou said. HTC is set to unveil its preliminary results for the fourth quarter Monday, but it has already warned that its revenue and profit are expected to slide. HTC banked on a renewed focus on Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 to help propel sales in the fourth quarter. HTC typically refreshes its product line at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in February, and likely will do so again this year. Chou has said the company needs to cut down on bureaucracy and has focused on streamlining operations. "One thing I'd learned from last year is to act fast and be responsive to market changes," he said. "We are being more flexible now. We are constantly fine-tuning our sales plans and position in various markets," he added. For more: - see this WSJ article (sub. req.) Register Today! | 2. Analyst: Samsung expected to widen smartphone lead over Apple in 2013 Samsung Electronics is likely going to expand its lead over Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the global smartphone market this year, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. Samsung was the world's largest smartphone vendor 2012 largely on the strength of its Galaxy line of Android smartphones, and in particular its flagship Galaxy S III. Though Apple may have won back the top spot in the fourth quarter due to expected blockbuster sales of its iPhone 5, Samsung certainly will retain the crown for all of 2012. In 2013, that lead will widen, Strategy Analytics said. "We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multitier product portfolio," Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Reuters. The research firm expects global smartphone shipments to climb 27 percent to 875 million units this year, down from 41 percent growth in 2012, as developed markets and China see slower growth. The analyst firm thinks Samsung will ship 290 million smartphones this year, up 35 percent from a projected 215 million in 2012. Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics forecasts Apple's smartphone sales to reach 180 million this year, up 33 percent from 2012. If those figures pan out, Strategy Analytics expects Samsung to capture 33 percent of the 2013 global smartphone market, up from last year's estimated 31 percent, while Apple will grab 21 percent, up marginally from last year's 20 percent. In the race between the two firms, Samsung benefits from being able to approach the low-, mid- and high-end segments of the market. Although Apple does this by cutting the price of its older models as it introduces new iPhones, Samsung has a much broader portfolio and thus has bigger shipment numbers. Some analysts think Apple will introduce a cheaper "iPhone Mini" this year to go after cost-conscious consumers, though many others doubt that. In the United States, for example, prepaid carriers like Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) Virgin Mobile brand and Cricket provider Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP) offer unsubsidized versions of the iPhone paired with cheaper rate plans. "We think Apple will have to launch an 'iPhone Mini' at some point over the next three years to address the hundreds of millions of prepaid users worldwide that cannot afford the current iPhone," Mawston said. "The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year." Huawei's 2012 profits to jump 10% Huawei, the world's second largest network gear vendor after Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), expects to post at least a 10 percent jump in 2012 net profit. The figure is a reversal from the 53 percent decline in profit Huawei recorded in 2011. In a memo posted on the company's website, acting CEO Guo Ping told employees that revenue is expected to exceed $35 billion for 2012 and net profit will hit $2.4 billion, both up more than 10 percent year-over-year. Huawei had posted net profit of $1.8 billion for 2011, down from $3.9 billion in the year-ago period. Overall revenue rose 11.7 percent to $32.3 billion in 2011. Huawei was the sixth-largest handset maker in the world in the third quarter of 2012, according to ABI Research. The company is making inroads in handsets in Western markets, including the United States, where its network infrastructure efforts have been largely stymied. The biggest black eye for Huawei came in October when a U.S. government report said Huawei and ZTE pose a security risk to the United States because their equipment could be used for espionage. The report, from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, recommended the U.S. block acquisitions and mergers involving Huawei and ZTE and also recommended that the U.S. government and U.S. companies avoid using equipment from the two Chinese companies. Huawei and ZTE pushed back aggressively against the report's conclusions, and have repeatedly said they do not pose a security threat and have no ties to the Chinese military or government. The Chinese government has also denied the claims and has suggested that the report could set back relations between the United States and China. Despite that difficulty, Guo said in 2013 the company should be laser-focused on continuing stable growth in its business units. "We should devote our limited energy to specific business objectives, and avoid the impulse to expand business blindly," he wrote. "Managers who expand business blindly must be held accountable." Guo wrote that in the past, rapid growth and strong execution was what the market saw in Huawei. Now, he said, the company needs to "ensure reasonable profits to support our continuous strategic investment." Google to stop using patents as weapons as part of FTC settlement As part of its settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) agreed to stop seeking sales bans on products that infringe on the standards-essential patents it owns. "We are especially glad to see that Google will live up to its commitments to license its standard-essential patents, which will ensure that companies willing to license these patents can compete in the market for wireless devices," FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a statement. "This decision strengthens the standard-setting process that is at the heart of innovation in today's technology markets." The settlement between Google and the FTC is the result of a 20-month antitrust investigation by the FTC into Google's business practices. The FTC concluded Google was not harming the Internet search market through its practices. Part of the investigation revolved around Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility, and Google's use of Motorola's patents. In essence, the FTC found Google guilty of abusing its patents for wireless standards, which are supposed to be licensed at reasonable royalty rates to others. As part of the settlement, Google agreed to license its standards patents on FRAND, or fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory, terms. The settlement could have a significant impact on the ongoing patent battles between Google and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Microsoft, for its part, blasted the FTC's agreement as "weak" and "unusual." In a company blog post, Microsoft's vice president and deputy general counsel, Dave Heiner, wrote that Google did not live up to its promises to license standards patents on FRAND terms and that the FTC agreement contains numerous loopholes for Google. After acquiring Motorola, the search giant pared down Motorola's handset manufacturing business and cut more than 4,000 jobs in the process. Meanwhile, Google has put up for sale Motorola's 1.1 million-square-foot headquarters in Libertyville, Ill. No sale price has been set, according to the Chicago Tribune, but the report noted that the campus could fetch $60 million. Google said last year it will move Motorola's headquarters to the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago this year. Windows Phone fell 0.6 percentage points to 3.0 percent, and Symbian slipped 0.2 percentage points to account for 0.5 percent of all smartphones nationwide.
