1. Time Warner Cable to stream 300 cable networks through Roku devices

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) said Monday that subscribers who buy streaming video devices from Roku will soon be able to watch 300 cable networks without using a cable set-top.

The nation's second largest cable MSO said it will launch its TWC TV app on Roku's Internet video set-tops. While Time Warner Cable said in December that subscribers who download versions of the TWC TV app for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and iPhone would be able to access its video-on-demand library, Roku users won't be able to watch cable VOD content.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt has embraced the idea of allowing subscribers to access cable programming through connected TVs and devices such as Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox 360. "If somebody wants to use the interface that comes with one device or another, that's fine. We're going to continue to have ours. If there's a better one--as long as they [subscribers] buy video from us--I don't care," Britt told analysts during the company's second-quarter earnings call in August.

Roku, whose competitors include Boxee, Apple TV and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) TV, markets a line of over-the-top video set-tops that cost as low as $50. It has also developed a small "streaming stick" device that can stream Internet video programming to any TV containing an HDMI port.

Supporting connected TV devices could allow Time Warner Cable to reduce capital spending, since it may be able to deploy fewer cable set-tops in subscriber homes. Britt predicted at the The Cable Show convention last May in Boston that cable set-tops would eventually become extinct and be replaced by connected TVs and other IP-connected devices.

Time Warner Cable and Roku announced the launch of the TWC TV app on Roku devices Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

2. AT&T takes on Comcast, Verizon with multiplatform U-verse Screen Pack

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AT&T (NYSE: T) launched the U-verse Screen Pack service on Monday, which lets cable subscribers who pay an extra $5 monthly watch movies and TV shows on TVs, tablets and smartphones.

Screen Pack could help AT&T compete against Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) $7.99 monthly Streampix product, which offers its Xfinity subscribers the ability to watch movies and TV shows on Web and mobile platforms. It also gives AT&T a service that could take on the viewdini video portal that Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) debuted in June.

AT&T is distributing more than 1,500 titles from Sony, MGM and other studios, an AT&T spokeswoman told FierceCable. The telco plans to add additional TV shows and movies to the service, she added.

AT&T said it is running a free preview of Screen Pack through Jan. 13. U-verse TV subscribers can order the service on channel 9910.

The Screen Pack announcement was made Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. AT&T also took the wraps off two other U-verse apps at the convention. Its Pix & Flix app lets subscribers "throw" photos that are stored on mobile devices to TV screens and view Facebook photos on their TVs. And AT&T said its new Twonky Beam app allows subscribers to send Internet video clips they view on mobile devices to U-verse set-tops.

3. Dish Network launches 'Explorer' remote control app for iPad

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) said it plans to launch an app for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad on Monday which will allow subscribers to control its Hopper multiroom DVR, and receive recommendations for programs based on real-time trends.

Its Explorer app incorporates Thurz ratings, which pick the hottest live sporting events, and deliver real-time sports stats. Dish said the app suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers by relying on data collected from social networks and viewing data collected from set-tops in Dish subscriber homes. It also allows subscribers to log into Facebook and Twitter, and track posts related to the programs they are watching.

The app could help Dish compete against DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and other pay TV providers that have developed similar apps for the iPad, iPhone and mobile devices that run Google's Android platform. Dish said the Explorer app connects to the Hopper via a WiFi connection.

4. Cox, Cisco to unveil new 'second screen experience' at CES

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Top executives from Cox Communications and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) said they plan to unveil a new "second screen experience" late Monday during an event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The move follows the launch in December of a new version of Cox's Trio interactive program guide which suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers based on their viewing habits.

"It's all about how Cox is making video personal. We're going to show the personal recommendations we launched recently, but will also reveal a second screen experience that no one has seen before and will be available to Cox customers this year," Cox spokesman Todd Smith told FierceCable Monday.

Cox president Pat Esser and Cisco president John Chambers will unveil the new product during a press event in Las Vegas that has been scheduled for 4:45 p.m., Cox said.

In December, Cox said it partnered with Cisco to develop the new version of the Trio guide, which incorporates a recommendation engine from ThinkAnalytics.

Cox rival Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) launched a new Explorer remote control app for the iPad on Monday. In addition to working with Cox to develop similar second-screen apps, Cisco may be able to help Cox deliver cable programming to connected TVs and other devices without using a set-top. Kip Compton, CTO of Cisco's Video and Collaboration Group, told FierceCable last year that the company's $5 billion acquisition of NDS would give it software that Cisco's cable customers could use to deliver content to connected TVs.

"We're living in this duality right now where service providers want to deliver to the consumers' devices, which may be smart or connected TVs, as well as tablets, PCs, mobile phones and so forth, but still have large installed bases of set-top boxes that they also need to bring into that service mix. So NDS's software solutions enable us to help service providers deliver content and services to set-tops they already have, set-tops they may buy as well as this class of devices that consumers may buy--either the connected TV or something else," Compton said.

5. YuMe, Civolution challenge advanced cable advertising with connected TV ad deals

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

YuMe said it struck deals with Buick, Discover Boating and Mindshare that deliver interactive advertising to viewers watching programming on connected TVs from Samsung, LG and other consumer electronics manufacturers.

The Redwood City, Calif.-based company is challenging advanced cable advertising platforms with its advertising network. YuMe unveiled a new "Click-to-Ngage" interactive ad unit on Monday which lets viewers watching traditional 30-second commercials access long-form videos from sponsors. Its ad units are similar to the telescopic VOD ads that Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), AT&T (NYSE: T) and other pay TV providers have been pitching media buyers.

"As the living room fast becomes the hub of household digital entertainment, connected TV is poised to emerge as the center of that digital ecosystem that will enhance the way consumers interact with brands," Telisa Yancy, director of advertising at American Family Insurance, said in YuMe's announcement on Monday.

YuMe faces increased competition in the connected TV advertising sector from automatic content recognition (ACR) technology provider Civolution and DG, a New York-based ad network. DG and Civolution said Monday that they completed the integration of Civolution's SyncNow ACR Platform and DG's MediaMind ad serving platform, which will allows advertisers to place ads on connected TVs, tablet computers and other IP-connected devices that are synchronized to programming running on a TV. The companies are demonstrating the product at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
