MetroPCS' Q4 subscriber losses surprise analysts MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) reported that it lost around 93,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, bringing its total subscriber loses for 2012 to around 460,000. The prepaid carrier's fourth-quarter declines were far greater than analysts had expected, and the news sent MetroPCS' shares down around 2 percent to $9.50 per share. "Today's pre-announced Q4 2012 subscriber results are well below our expectation of a gain of 63,000 and consensus expectations of 50,000 adds," said Craig Moffett, analyst at Bernstein Research, according to Investor's Business Daily. "The results from MetroPCS suggest that prepaid [growth] may be rapidly deteriorating and competitive intensity is rising." The results are particularly worrying for MetroPCS, which is hoping to close a merger with Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA. The companies expect the transaction to close sometime this year. However, Moffett noted that MetroPCS' subscriber loses likely won't affect DT's plans since T-Mobile USA is in need of the additional spectrum that MetroPCS owns in the U.S. market. Nonetheless, some analysts said MetroPCS' fourth-quarter results highlight the carrier's precarious position in the hotly competitive U.S. wireless market. "This is the first time [Metro] PCS has lost subscribers on a net basis in Q4, which is typically its second strongest quarter behind Q1, and marks the company's third consecutive quarter of net subscriber losses," noted UBS analyst John Hodulik, according to Investor's Business Daily. "We believe this underscores the urgency with which the company pursued merger partners before reaching a deal with T-Mobile in October." In the fourth quarter, MetroPCS reported gross additions of 866,000 subscribers, a 29 percent decrease over the fourth quarter of 2011. The company ended the fourth quarter of 2012 with around 8.9 million subscribers, notably down from the 9.3 million customers MetroPCS ended with in 2011. However, the carrier did show some bright spots. MetroPCS reported 2.2 million 4G LTE subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter, which it said was an increase of 117 percent from the third quarter of 2012. And MetroPCS' churn shrank to 3.6 percent in the period, down slightly from the 3.7 percent it reported in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012. MetroPCS' fourth-quarter results are preliminary; the carrier is scheduled to post full fourth-quarter results Feb. 18. Under MetroPCS' proposed deal with T-Mobile, which still requires regulatory approval, Deutsche Telekom will hold 74 percent of the merged business and will pay MetroPCS shareholders $1.5 billion in cash. The transaction will combine T-Mobile's spectrum with MetroPCS' spectrum, and it will allow T-Mobile to offer a broader and deeper LTE network. A combined T-Mobile and MetroPCS will still sit behind Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) as the nation's No. 4 carrier by subscribers. Verizon brings shared data to business accounts Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) announced that it will offer shared data to its business users, thereby expanding the addressable market for the shared data push the carrier launched last year with consumers. Verizon's Share Everything Plan for Small Business gives companies up to 25 lines of service. The plan provides unlimited talking and messaging and a shareable allowance of 30 GB ($225), 40 GB ($300) and 50 GB ($375). Users must also pay the monthly per-line access fee, which costs $40 for smartphones and $10 for tablets. Verizon said new and existing customers can move to the plans, and the carrier said the plans would simplify businesses' wireless expenses. For businesses with more than 25 lines, Verizon announced its Nationwide for Business Talk and Talk & Text share plans. The plans allow businesses of any size to create their own shareable data allowances via a single account. Under these plans, shareable data starts at $30 for 2 GB per smartphone or tablet and $50 for 5 GB per Jetpack or USB modem. A larger $80 for 10 GB package is also available for heavy data users. Basic phones can share data starting at $20 for 300 MB per device. For its part, an AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) spokeswoman said the carrier does not currently offer shared data for businesses and declined to comment on whether it would do so in the future. Verizon's shared data plans for business are relatively similar to the pricing options it offers consumers. For consumers, Verizon charges between $50 for 1 GB of shared data and $100 for 10 GB of shared data, with device costs ranging from $40 for smartphones to $10 for tablets. Verizon and AT&T overhauled their data pricing strategies last year to allow families and other groups of users to share data, as they do with minutes, with the goal of simplifying customer billing and increasing data revenues. Verizon said in October that more than 13 percent of its customer base had opted for the new shared data plans, higher than it expected. Regional wireless carrier C Spire Wireless jointed the two carriers in November with its own shared data services. However, Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile currently offer unlimited data services to smartphone users, arguing that shared data is too complex and unnecessary. Sprint As You Go unlimited prepaid launching Jan. 25, without speed throttling Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) confirmed that it will launch a Sprint-branded prepaid service Jan. 25 that will offer unlimited talk, text and data on feature phones and smartphones. The carrier also said it will not throttle or otherwise limit the data usage on its new prepaid plans. | | Samsung Victory | Further, the carrier said that one of the two phones it is offering through the service, the Android-powered Samsung Victory, will connect to the carrier's LTE network. The blog Android Police earlier this week reported that Sprint would launch its Sprint As You Go prepaid brand later this month. Sprint As You Go will offer two plans: a $70 per month plan for smartphones that includes unlimited voice, texting and data, and a $50 per month plan for feature phones that includes unlimited voice, texting and data. The plans will support 1xRTT data roaming but not EV-DO data roaming, and they won't support premium Sprint features like smartphone Wi-Fi hotspots and Sprint Navigation. Sprint will sell four phones for the service, two feature phones and two smartphones. The two smartphones will be the LG Optimus Elite for $150 and the Samsung Victory for $250. The LTE-capable Samsung Victory will give users in Sprint's LTE coverage area prepaid access to the carrier's high-speed LTE network. "This is essentially a retail initiative for Sprint-branded stores only, created for customers who have an affinity for the Sprint brand and have indicated they want a no-contract option," explained Sprint spokeswoman Jayne Wallace. "As for our prepaid brands, this actually allows us to strengthen the focus on our primary prepaid sales channels." Sprint currently offers prepaid service though its Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Assurance Wireless brands. Wallace said Sprint As You Go will not be a brand on the same level as Boost or Virgin; instead, it will be an offering available only through Sprint stores for those customers who want a prepaid option. She said Sprint As You Go will not be sold through Sprint's indirect or resale distribution channels. That Sprint won't throttle the speeds of its Sprint As You Go offering is notable. Starting this year, both Boost and Virgin will throttle the data speeds of customers who exceed 2.5 GB of data usage per month. Sprint has long offered unlimited, unthrottled data to its postpaid subscribers under its Simply Everything plans, a strategy that sets Sprint apart from AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and other carriers that have taken a tiered approach to data pricing. In the third quarter Sprint added a net total of 19,000 prepaid customers. However, that included net additions of 459,000 prepaid Sprint platform customers, and was offset by net losses of 440,000 prepaid Nextel platform customers. Sprint is shutting down the Nextel iDEN network this year and expects to continue to lose Nextel customers as it does so, though the company is working to migrate those subscribers to its CDMA network. Clearwire investor Crest to urge FCC to block Sprint/Clearwire deal Crest Financial, a minority investor in Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR), said it will ask the FCC to halt both Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) proposed $2.2 billion acquisition of Clearwire as well as Softbank's $20.1 billion deal to acquire 70 percent of Sprint. Crest, which owns around 8.3 percent of the non-Sprint shares in Clearwire, said it plans to file a formal complaint with the FCC before the Jan. 28 comment deadline on the two deals. "Crest is optimistic that the FCC will take a close look at the transaction," David Schumacher, Crest's general counsel, said on a conference call with reporters, according to Bloomberg. "By artificially pushing down the price of Clearwire spectrum, Sprint and Clearwire threaten to devalue future government auctions of spectrum." Sprint last month made a $2.97 per share offer to buy the 49 percent of Clearwire's shares it did not already own. Crest subsequently filed a lawsuit to block the deal, arguing it undervalues Clearwire's spectrum. Clearwire declined comment, according to Bloomberg. Sprint declined to comment on the specifics of Crest's claims, but has called the firm's lawsuit "baseless and without merit," according to the Wall Street Journal. Sprint's proposed acquisition of Clearwire is contingent on the Softbank deal closing, and the companies expect both deals to close by mid-2013. Sprint is Clearwire's largest shareholder and by far its largest wholesale customer. Sprint's acquisition of Clearwire, if approved, would give Sprint complete control over Clearwire's TD-LTE network deployment, set for next year. Clearwire commands around 160 MHz of spectrum in the top 100 markets, and Sprint said its Network Vision network architecture would allow it to efficiently deploy TD-LTE. Rumor Mill: T-Mobile brings unlimited data to prepaid T-Mobile USA reportedly will launch an unlimited talk, text and data option for prepaid customers this week, replacing an existing plan that has a 5 GB data cap. According to the blog TmoNews, the $70 Unlimited no-contract plan will launch on Jan. 9. The comparable existing $70 prepaid plan offers unlimited talk and text but limits users to 5 GB. TmoNews quoted an unreleased T-Mobile document that says the new plan is "perfect for video chat, streaming music/movies/TV and playing online games." The plan could be announced by T-Mobile USA at a major two-hour press conference the company has scheduled during the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas. The meeting, slated for Jan. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Las Vegas, is also expected to address the operator's efforts to acquire no-contract carrier MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) and T-Mobile's ongoing network modernization initiative, which will include the rollout of LTE over AWS 1.7/2.1 GHz frequencies this year. On Sept. 5, 2012, T-Mobile reversed gears, switching from promoting tiered data plans to offering Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plans for its postpaid customers. T-Mobile is not the only carrier taking a fresh look at unlimited prepaid service. Last week, Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) confirmed it will launch a Sprint-branded prepaid service Jan. 25 that will offer unlimited talk, text and data on feature phones and smartphones. The carrier also said it will not throttle or otherwise limit the data usage on its new prepaid plan, even though later this month Sprint's existing Boost Mobile sub-brand will begin throttling the data speeds of customers who exceed 2.5 GB of data usage per month. Sprint's Virgin Mobile USA sub-brand initiated a similar throttling effort last year. Sprint has long offered unlimited, unthrottled data to its postpaid subscribers under its Simply Everything plans T-Mobile USA last month confirmed to FierceWireless that it is testing a new prepaid brand, GoSmart Mobile, in "select markets." According to TmoNews, GoSmart Mobile would charge $45 for unlimited voice, texting and "high-speed" Web service, which would be limited to "3G" service, meaning it probably would not cover T-Mobile's 4G-branded HSPA+ service or its impending LTE rollout. The two leading U.S. mobile operators have eliminated unlimited plans from their current lineups, though they each have grandfathered in customers who signed up for unlimited plans previously. During the recent holidays, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) launched a double data promotion that will increase the data allotment on its $80 prepaid smartphone plan from 1 GB per month to 2 GB. The promotion is only available to new customers who purchase 3G CDMA smartphones (it doesn't cover LTE phones) and runs through Jan. 31. The companies said that the new IoE development platform uses Qualcomm's Gobi chipset for 3G modem technologies and will allow developers to accelerate development and decrease time-to-market for connected devices on AT&T's network. Some of the vertical markets the companies are targeting with the new platform include tracking, industrial controls and healthcare.
