Register Now! | | At CES 2013, innovation isn't coming from smartphone makers LA S VEGAS--The annual Consumer Electronics Show here is typically used by the world's gadget makers to show off their latest and greatest hardware innovations. This is the place you'll see giant TVs, car stereos that could seriously damage your hearing and smartphones that will set the tone for the next 12 months. But at this year's CES, there isn't much new in the world of smartphones. To be clear, there are a number of new smartphones that have landed. Sony Mobile Communications promises "experiences beyond the ordinary" with its new Xperia Z Android smartphone. Huawei is pushing the limits of smartphone gigantism with its new Ascend Mate, which sports a 6.1-inch screen. And China's TCL hopes to invade the U.S. market with its new line of Alcatel One Touch phones (which are apparently so advanced that one company PR representative needed help unlocking the device's home screen). But these devices offer virtually nothing new to the industry beyond negligible improvements in specifications. | | Click here for Fierce's complete coverage of this year's Consumer Electronics Show. | Further, none of the industry's major players is showing off new hardware at this year's show. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is MIA as usual, Nokia (NASDAQ:AAPL) is pushing its existing Windows Phone devices and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is holding its news for its big Jan. 30 unveiling of BlackBerry 10. Indeed, Samsung Electronics--the world's largest smartphone maker--devoted just a few minutes to its smartphones and tablets during his press conference here, despite the fact that its Galaxy Note II phablet and Galaxy S III smartphone played large roles in powering the firm's expected $8.3 billion in quarterly profit. CES attendees, it seems, are more interested in refrigerators that can run Evernote and other apps. In the void left by the world's smartphone makers, there is a surprisingly active market for smartphone accessories. I'm not talking about the seemingly endless parade of smartphone cases (seriously, the world does not need this many case-makers). I'm talking about new, potentially disruptive business models built around electronic sidekicks for smartphones. Verizon Wireless gained 2.1M net adds during Q4 The fourth quarter of 2012 was "the best fourth quarter in the history of Verizon Wireless," said Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) CEO Lowell McAdam, who credited the wireless operator's Share Everything plan for luring 2.1 million net additions to the carrier during the quarter, 30 percent of which were new to Verizon. Share Everything, the operator's oft-controversial data-sharing price package, has worked out even better than the company hoped. "It's a big hit from the customers' perspective as well as ours," said McAdam, who made his comments during the 2013 Citi Global Internet, Media & Communications Conference in Las Vegas. Though Verizon is not slated to announce its fourth-quarter earnings until Jan. 22, McAdam released a few pertinent metrics related to the wireless business. He said 85 percent of devices sold during 2012's final three-month period were smartphones, the latest generation of which are all LTE-enabled. "So we've seen our percent of LTE in our base go from 16 percent to 23 percent in one quarter," said McAdam. Verizon is rolling out a new brand campaign called "Powerful Answers," so McAdam intends to highlight new technology solutions during his keynote at the 2013 International CES event on Tuesday. Reviewing notes from his CES keynote from two years ago, McAdam said, "It strikes me how dramatically the network has changed over these last two years." Wireless, for example, had less than 1 Mbps of throughput, but that is now up to 10-15 Mbps. Cloud technology was only a vision two years ago, but now it is reality. "The power of the network has really changed dramatically, if not exponentially," he added. During his CES keynote, McAdam will host Roger Goodell, NFL commissioner, and Paul Mascarenas, CTO at Ford, and discuss how communications technology innovations are changing their businesses. Regarding technology advances, McAdam mentioned location-based advertising, which has become a touchy subject among privacy advocates. "We will be able to tell with LTE, your location within a store, so that a retailer can tell you five feet ahead of you on the left, and here's a coupon for it, is something you've bought in the past." McAdam was asked about comments he made to the Wall Street Journal regarding Verizon's long-standing desire to acquire Vodafone's 45 percent interest in Verizon Wireless. "We've always been ready" to buy out Vodafone's stake, he replied. "I don't feel any great urgency to [do] anything preemptive here." "We're very focused on expanding the business right now," he added. Another topic addressed was unlimited wireless data pricing, which has become a differentiator for wireless operators such as Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile USA. In addition, smaller players such as MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) and Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP) have long been aggressive on pricing. But McAdam said Verizon will not get sucked into competing on low tariffs. "That's not our sweet spot," he said, noting Verizon prefers to focuses more on premium postpaid customers. He also predicted that rival operators will not be able to sustain their unlimited data packages, largely due to the impact of video consumption in a wireless environment. McAdam said the U.S. mobile market can continue to thrive and referenced Japanese operator Softbank's pending $20.1 billion deal for 70 percent of Sprint. "Softbank could go to any country in the world and make an investment," he said. "They came to the U.S." McAdam said having three or four strong carriers "is far better than two strong carriers and bunch of weak carriers that are having a hard time meeting their capital demands." Verizon's chief executive was also interviewed by Reuters today, where he discussed T-Mobile's plan to eliminate subsidies on wireless devices. McAdam said he is open to that idea, but he added buyers prefer paying less up front for a device, even if that means they will have to pay higher service fees during a long-term wireless contract. Register Today! | 2. Qualcomm's Jacobs unveils new Snapdragon chips, touts connected vision LAS VEGAS--Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) CEO Paul Jacobs announced a new line of the company's flagship Snapdragon chipsets and, in highlighting how he envisions them being used in smartphones and tablets, also noted how Qualcomm hopes to enable the next generation of mobile experiences. | | Jacobs | In a keynote address here Monday night to kick off the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, Jacobs introduced the Snapdragon 600 and 800 chipset lines, which he said will both deliver better performance than the existing Snapdragon S4 Pro processors. The introduction of the new chipsets was a rebuttal of sorts to Nvidia, which on Sunday announced the Tegra 4, its latest silicon. Jacobs said the 600 series will be aimed at high-end devices and will deliver up to 40 percent better performance than the Snapdragon S4 Pro processor at lower power. The new processor sports a new Krait 300 quad-core CPU with speeds up to 1.9GHz, and is sampling now. Jacobs said the product is expected to be available in commercial devices by the second quarter. However, Jacobs spent much of his time talking up the 800, which is geared for "premium" mobile computing experiences. The chip will deliver up to 75 percent better performance than the S4 Pro, has a Krait quad-core configuration with speeds of up to 2.3 GHz per core. The chip also integrates 802.11ac Wi-Fi, LTE modem technology and also supports LTE Advanced for carrier aggregation. Further, Jacobs said the 800 will support the capture, playback and display of Ultra HD video with four times the pixels of 1080p video. Jacobs called the 800 the "most advanced wireless processor ever built," in contrast to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang who called the Tegra 4 the "fastest mobile application processor in the world today." Unlike the Tegra 4, which uses a standalone LTE baseband chipset, the 800 integrates LTE into a single chip. Qualcomm said 800 processors are currently sampling and should be available in commercial devices by mid-year 2013. Qualcomm said that it already has 50 design wins between the 600 and 800 chipset lines. During his keynote, Jacobs called upon film director Guillermo Del Toro to demonstrate how Ultra HD video can be displayed using a device running the 800 chipset. The director played a particularly gruesome clip from his 2002 film Blade II and also showed a trailer for his upcoming movie Pacific Rim. Jacobs, whose address was called "Born Mobile," took over a keynote slot that for a dozen years had been reserved for Microsoft; Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer delivered the company's final CES keynote appearance last year. Interestingly though, Jacobs welcomed Ballmer onstage during his keynote to talk about the companies' partnership for Windows 8 RT devices and Windows Phone. The Qualcomm chief also talked about how Qualcomm is working to help wireless carriers deal with a potential 1000x increase in network traffic. Much of Qualcomm's work involves the deployment of small cells. In August Qualcomm acquired Israeli small cell firm DesignArt Networks. The chipset giant hopes to use the acquisition to bolster its position as a key provider of chipset and network architecture products for heterogeneous networks, or HetNets, which rely in part on small cells. Jacobs also touted the firm's Vuforia augmented reality platform. He said that more than 40,000 developers from more than 130 countries have registered for the platform, and that there are more than 2,500 apps for Vuforia, with 1,500 coming in the last six months. Jacobs introduced the Sesame Workshop (and Big Bird) to demonstrate how augmented reality can be used to help children improve their vocabulary. The keynote was topped off with an appearance from actress Alice Eve, who will star in the upcoming film Star Trek: Into Darkness. Qualcomm is partnering with Paramount, the studio behind the film, for a special app tied to the movie that makes use of Gimbal, Qualcomm's locational context-aware application enhancement platform. Jacobs, an avowed Star Trek fan, tried to get Eve to spill details about the film, but the actress stayed mostly mum. The keynote ended with a performance by the band Maroon 5. AT&T sold a record 10M smartphones in Q4 AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) reported it sold a record 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, another indication that Tier 1 postpaid carriers enjoyed strong sales and subscriber activations during the period--likely at the expense of prepaid carriers. AT&T said the 10 million figure bested its previous record of 9.4 million, which AT&T achieved in the fourth quarter of 2011. AT&T said its fourth-quarter 2012 sales included its best-ever quarterly sales of Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. Interestingly, the carrier did not indicate how well Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone devices performed during the quarter; AT&T has been a major Windows Phone supporter. According to Reuters, AT&T's figures suggest AT&T sold 26.7 million smartphones in 2012, higher than the 26 million it had previously given as its expectation, a figure that was itself higher than an earlier projection of 25 million. The announcement from AT&T is not exactly a surprise. At an investor conference in early December, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said the company was on track to sell a record number of smartphones in the fourth quarter. At the time, he said that in the first two months of the fourth quarter the carrier had sold 6.4 million smartphones, more than the 6.1 million it sold in all of the third quarter. In a statement, de la Vega noted that smartphone customers produce average revenues twice those of non-smartphone subscribers. He also said that during the fourth quarter the company averaged more than 110,000 smartphone sales per day. Those smartphone sales will likely boost AT&T's revenue for the fourth quarter, but they could depress the carrier's wireless operating margins, since AT&T will likely incur higher subsidy costs. De la Vega told the Wall Street Journal that the company is watching T-Mobile USA's decision to drop device subsidies from its plans this year. He said AT&T could make a similar move if it proves popular, but he said the company is not too concerned. "Our research says that they [customers] don't like paying upfront for the phone," he said. "There didn't seem to be the appetite for that kind of plan." AT&T's announcement about its smartphone sales comes a day after rival Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) gave some clues about its fourth-quarter numbers. Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam said at an investor conference that the carrier notched 2.1 million net subscriber additions during the period, 30 percent of which were new to Verizon. McAdam further said that smartphones made up 87 percent of Verizon's device sales in the fourth quarter. Separately, prepaid carrier MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) reported that it lost around 93,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, bringing its total subscriber loses for 2012 to around 460,000. "These numbers suggest that regional prepaid carriers are having a tough time retaining customers as national carriers roll out competitive plans at the same time that prepaid growth is beginning to slow," New Street Telecom analyst Jonathan Chaplin wrote in a research note. AT&T will go live with Digital Life home automation service in March LAS VEGAS--AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) will launch its Digital Life home automation service in eight markets in March with plans to expand the service to 50 markets nationwide by year-end. The company will handle all aspects of the service from selling it at AT&T retail stores to providing customer service, billing and installation. During AT&T's annual Developer Summit held here in conjunction with the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, Glenn Lurie, president of emerging enterprises and partnerships at AT&T, said that AT&T's Digital Life product will use the company's wireless network and will allow subscribers to customize the service and have flexible price plans. However, he did not provide specifics on that pricing. Lurie said that AT&T will have Digital Life centers in Atlanta and Dallas that will manage the product. The company is actively looking for developers to make applications for Digital Life to help make the product more robust. Lurie and his team first unveiled the Digital Life concept in New Orleans last May when they outfitted a stately New Orleans Garden District home with home automation services. Members of the media that toured the home saw demonstrations of how various home appliances, window shades, table lamps, door locks, security cameras and even coffee pots can be outfitted with wireless sensors and then be controlled via an app on the homeowners' iPad or smartphone. Lurie noted that the existing home security market is due for a "facelift" and that fewer than 1 percent of households in the U.S. have home automation services. "The market needs competition to drive innovation in the space. The market is underpenetrated," Lurie said. "People want more features and more value," he said, adding that most of the current services are targeted at the very "high-end" of the market. Lurie also said that 60 percent of the market is currently handled by more than 1,000 home security companies and the market leader has just six million customers. Cisco is a key partner in AT&T's Digital Life initiative and created the digital controller for the service. Cisco CEO John Chambers joined Lurie and AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega on the stage at the developer summit to talk about Digital Life. Chambers called the initiative a "market transition opportunity" for AT&T and said that the two companies have been working on this for the past two years. He also said that Digital Life's goal is to be able to scale and go global with the service. Other partners involved in AT&T's Digital Life initiative include Honeywell, Jasco, Yale, Aeon Labs, ServiceLive, Linear, Sercom and Asurion. Sprint to launch HTC, Samsung Windows Phones by the summer LAS VEGAS--Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) confirmed that it will launch LTE smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8 by the summer. Sprint said it will launch devices made by HTC and Samsung Electronics, though it did not mention specific models. Sprint said in mid-November that it would launch Windows Phones this year. Separately, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) promised it would sell the Samsung Ativ Odyssey Windows Phone 8 smartphone. The gadget will join the Windows Phone 8X by HTC and the Nokia Lumia 822 in Verizon's Windows Phone 8 portfolio. Sprint touted the fact that it will pair its Windows Phone 8 devices with its unlimited smartphone data plans, which remain a key point of differentiation between Sprint and Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T). Those carriers, along with T-Mobile USA, launched Windows Phone 8 devices in the fourth quarter. "Sprint has had a strong relationship with Microsoft for many years so we are excited to reinforce our commitment to the Windows 8 platform by sharing the details and timing for our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones," said Fared Adib, Sprint's senior vice president of product development and operations. "These smartphones combine a robust new operating platform with the benefit of Sprint's unlimited data plans. There is no doubt these phones will quickly become an extension of your PC experience right in the palm of your hand." The timing of Sprint summer launch could indicate that Sprint wants to expand its LTE network more before launching the devices. Sprint expects to cover 250 million POPs with LTE by year-end. Sprint has launched only one Windows Phone to date, the HTC Arrive, which Sprint has said was one of its most-returned phones in recent history. U.S. Cellular (NYSE:USM) has also voiced support for Windows Phone 8, but has not said when it will launch Microsoft devices. For Microsoft, getting additional carrier support will be crucial to building Windows Phone's market share. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in November that Windows Phone 8 will rapidly capture more market share as it builds on its relatively small user base. "With the work we have done with Nokia (NYSE:NOK), HTC, Samsung and others ... there is now an opportunity to create really a strong third participant in the smartphone market," Ballmer said at the time. "We're still relatively small ... I expect the volumes on Windows Phone to really ramp quickly." Ballmer has said Microsoft will put its marketing muscle behind Windows 8, its Surface tablet and Windows Phone 8 for the biggest marketing push in the company's history. In addition to its own marketing, Microsoft had solid carrier support this holiday season: AT&T, T-Mobile and, perhaps most importantly, Verizon, all backed Microsoft's push to gain market share with marketing of their own. According to research firm IDC, Microsoft captured just 2 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter, in contrast with Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, which captured 75 percent, and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, which garnered 14.9 percent. There were 3.6 million Microsoft smartphone shipments in the third quarter, according to IDC, up from 1.5 million in the third quarter of 2011. Dish's Ergen still sorting out wireless options, but doesn't want to sell spectrum LAS VEGAS--Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH) Chairman Charlie Ergen said it will probably be months before the company finalizes its plan for how to proceed with its wireless network as it works through regulatory and technical hurdles. Still, he said that he does not want to sell the company's 40 MHz of AWS-4 spectrum, which the FCC approved last month for terrestrial mobile broadband use. "We don't want to sell the spectrum," Ergen told Reuters on the sidelines of the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show here. "We'd prefer to be in the wireless broadband business and make a difference to consumers." Dish has indicated it would like to partner with another carrier to build its proposed LTE Advanced network, but has not made a firm commitment to that idea.
