iOS piracy won't end with Hackulous, Installous shutdown
When an application is pirated, developers often do not know how bad the damage is. The nature of mobile app piracy is that those who perpetuate it do so in a way that makes it particularly challenging to track and evaluate whether they are losing business or merely attracting interest from early adopters. This issue came to a head again earlier this month when Hackulous, a longtime hub for piracy within the iOS community, abruptly announced it was discontinuing operations. Further, Hackulous was not merely an online discussion forum but a service that included its own app, Installous, that could transfer cracked apps to devices running iOS. It also maintained Apptrackr, a Web-based index of cracked apps. Experts say there will be plenty of others to take its place. Special Report Special Report.

Clarification: In the article "PTel ditches Sprint for T-Mobile, plans ad-subsidized wireless service" in yesterday's issue, the nature of PTel's pricing was misstated. The company did not disclose T-Mobile MVNO pricing or Sprint MVNO pricing.

1. T-Mobile days away from launching LTE in Las Vegas, Kansas City to be next

By Sue Marek Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

T-Mobile USA will launch its first LTE market in Las Vegas any day now. The operator originally planned to launch LTE in Las Vegas last week during the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show but that plan was delayed due to some last-minute tweaks that were needed on a few cell sites. During an interview at CES, T-Mobile USA EVP and CTO Neville Ray told FierceWireless that the Las Vegas market "is coming on real fast" and will likely launch very soon.

Ray added that T-Mobile's launch in Las Vegas will be followed quickly by a launch in Kansas City. He also hinted that the company's LTE market launches will follow a path similar to its 1900 MHz HSPA+ launches. With HSPA+ in the 1900 MHz band, T-Mobile launched Las Vegas first, followed by Kansas City; Baltimore; Houston and Washington, D.C.

The carrier has been deploying HSPA+ on its 1900 MHz PCS spectrum (which was previously reserved for slower speed GSM service) partially in order to supply HSPA speeds to iPhones. The iPhone does not support the AWS bands that T-Mobile uses for HSPA. T-Mobile now has 100 million POPs covered with HSPA+ on 1900 MHz, and has said 170 million will be covered by mid-2013 and 200 million covered by the end of 2013.

As for LTE, T-Mobile will cover 100 million people with its LTE network by the middle of this year, and expects to cover 200 million POPs by the end of 2013. The carrier will offer the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II as some of its first LTE devices.

In the interview, Ray also touted the company's launch of nationwide HD voice service. T-Mobile launched HD voice in the company's HSPA/UMTS footprint, which covers 200 million POPs. Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) currently offers HD voice on its LTE network. At the end of third quarter Sprint had 32 LTE markets live and 200 markets under construction.

2. Nokia Siemens touts LTE win at U.S. Cellular

By Tammy Parker Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Nokia Siemens Networks was a provider of radio access network (RAN) and mobile management entity (MME) equipment in 11 markets for U.S. Cellular's (NYSE:USM) second wave of LTE launches, which occurred in late 2012.

NSN is also providing evolved packet core (EPC) and home subscriber services for U.S. Cellular's LTE network, which is based on the 3GPP Release 9 standard. Installation of NSN's LTE core was included in nine separate markets. Further, the vendor is supplying network implementation services as well as hardware and software services.

U.S. Cellular and its spectrum bidding partner King Street Wireless initiated their first wave of LTE market launches during March 2012 using 700 MHz Lower A Block spectrum but have been reticent about identifying their network infrastructure suppliers.

Their March rollout of LTE included cities in Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. RAN equipment for those initial markets was supplied by NSN's rival Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), Ric Herald, head of NSN's sub-region customer business teams in North America, told FierceBroadbandWireless.

NSN's RAN equipment was subsequently installed in select cities in Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia, with the last of the markets being outfitted in late October 2012.

On Nov. 5 U.S. Cellular announced the rollout of LTE in more than 30 markets. A U.S. Cellular spokesman declined to name the RAN providers for that launch or confirm whether that launch included the 11 NSN RAN markets.

U.S. Cellular's older 2G and 3G networks were supplied primarily by Alcatel-Lucent (NASDAQ: ALU) and Ericsson, Herald said. Nokia (NYSE:NOK), prior to the formation of Nokia Siemens, also at one time supplied U.S. Cellular with GSM infrastructure, which is still being used in a particular market, he noted.

The U.S. Cellular LTE deal is notable for NSN, given that it was not a major vendor for the operator previously. Further, the contract helps validate NSN's laser focus on being a provider of mobile broadband equipment and related services primarily in North America, Japan and South Korea.

The pact with U.S. Cellular was the culmination of a three- or four-year sales process, Herald said. "We spent a lot of time working with senior management and convincing them. It's no secret that a year ago everyone was asking if we were going to survive. And we've demonstrated to the market that we're going to survive with what we've done," he said.

U.S. Cellular's full-year 2012 LTE coverage target was 15.4 million POPs. Its LTE network currently covers 58 percent of its customer base and will reach 87 percent by year's end.

"Nokia Siemens Networks launched 11 of our markets to help us meet this aggressive timeline and completed the deployment of the core network elements ahead of schedule," said Michael Irizarry, U.S. Cellular's CTO.

NSN claims to have 77 commercial references in place worldwide for the delivery of LTE and 206 W-CDMA radio customers, which the company said gives it more 3G and LTE contracts than any other network vendor.

In May T-Mobile USA named NSN and Ericsson as primary infrastructure vendors for its forthcoming LTE network. However, NSN is still smarting from missing out on LTE RAN contracts with AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), both of which selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as their primary LTE vendors. NSN is supplying IMS for Verizon's LTE network, however.

U.S. Cellular's partner King Street Wireless holds 700 MHz wireless spectrum in 27 states. Both companies are members of the Interoperability Alliance, which is pushing the FCC to mandate LTE interoperability in the Lower 700 MHz band.

3. AT&T's femtocell policy raises net neutrality concerns, group warns

By Mike Dano Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Interest group Public Knowledge is rallying against AT&T Mobility's (NYSE:T) femtocell terms of service, arguing the carrier's approach to tallying users' data consumption runs against the FCC's net neutrality provisions.

"AT&T has decided that the data from AT&T wireless microcells will not count against the data caps on AT&T DSL or U-verse home broadband connections," wrote Michael Weinberg in a Public Knowledge blog post. "This sets AT&T microcell data apart from every other type of data on those connections, including data from a Verizon or Sprint microcell. The message to AT&T DSL and U-verse consumers is clear: if your cell signal is weak and you are worried about your data cap, better get a phone from AT&T Wireless. Simply put, this is an abuse of data caps."

AT&T for years has offered a femtocell to customers who can't connect to the carrier's wireless network. AT&T's device, branded MicroCell, is essentially a mini base station that creates a tiny bubble of wireless service. Traffic from the device is routed through a user's wired Internet connection.

In his argument, Weinberg said that AT&T's approach toward its femtocell billing is the second major example of a large carrier prioritizing its own Internet traffic over other types of traffic. Comcast last year came under fire for removing its Xfinity video service from its data cap in some situations. The FCC is still reviewing that situation. Comcast, for its part, has denied its strategy runs afoul of net neutrality.

In a related situation, AT&T last year was criticized for expanding Apple's FaceTime video calling service only to subscribers of its Mobile Share shared data plans.

The FCC in 2010 passed net neutrality guidelines that essentially require telecom companies to treat all Internet communications in the same way. The guidelines have been challenged in court by various telecom companies, including Verizon, but have largely been upheld.

An AT&T Mobility representative did not immediately respond to questions about Public Knowledge's post.

4. Survey shows Samsung smartphone momentum at an all-time high

By Sue Marek Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Consumers who intend to purchase smartphones are closely eyeing Samsung smartphones, according to new research by 451 ChangeWave. In fact, the percentage of people planning to buy Samsung devices has increased from just 5 percent in September 2011 to 21 percent in December 2012. 451 ChangeWave's survey covers planned purchases that consumers will make during the next 90 days.

The company, which has been tracking smartphone buying intentions of consumers for the past four years, believes its latest research is significant for Samsung. The December survey found that while 50 percent of North Americans still plan on buying an Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone during the first of 2013, that number is down from 71 percent during the previous quarter.  Approximately 21 percent of consumers said they would purchase a Samsung device in the December survey.

451 ChangeWave notes that there is still strong consumer interest in Apple, and demand for Apple usually increases immediately following an iPhone release and then returns to a lower mark. However, in this latest survey that lower mark for the iPhone 5 is lower than previous iterations of the iPhone, indicating Samsung is making gains on Apple.

Specifically, 451 ChangeWave said that Apple has traditionally seen a steady increase in purchase intentions by consumers from 30 percent in the 2008/2009 time frame to 40 percent in the 2010/2011 time frame to 50 percent in 2012.  However, with the iPhone 5, consumer purchase intentions have dropped of more quickly than in the past.  For example, after the iPhone 5 was introduced there was a 19 point drop vs. 11 points after the iPhone 4S was introduced and 13 points after the iPhone 4 was introduced.

451 ChangeWave's results aren't surprising as many analyst firms have predicted that Samsung will expand its lead over Apple in the global smartphone market this year. In fact earlier this month,  Strategy Analytics predicted that Samsung will widen its lead as the world's largest smartphone vendor in 2013. "We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multitier product portfolio," Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Reuters in a Jan. 4 report.

5. BlackBerry Z10 phone rumored ahead of RIM's Jan. 30 event

By Mike Dano Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is reportedly planning to unveil the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone during its Jan. 30 press event, according to reports, and the company is also working to educate its carrier partners of the device's capabilities.

According to various media reports, RIM's Z10 smartphone is powered by Texas Instruments' OMAP 4470 dual-core chipset and features 2 GB of RAM, a 4.2-inch screen with a 1280x768 display and 16 GB of storage. The rumored specifications would put the device in the middle of the market's current crop of smartphones. Thus, it appears RIM is hoping to entice customers with the new features of its BlackBerry 10 operating system rather than high-end hardware capabilities.

According to reports, the device maker is also supplying its carrier partners with training materials in order to help them sell BlackBerry 10 devices. Specifically, RIM is reportedly boasting of "best in class HTML5 compatibility and performance" with its Web browser and support for around 70,000 BlackBerry 10 apps at launch.

RIM is hoping to revive its flagging fortunes with the launch of its BlackBerry 10 operating system early this year. The company plans to begin selling two BlackBerry 10 phones shortly after its Jan. 30 press event, a touchscreen phone and a phone with a Qwerty keyboard. The Z10 could be the touchscreen phone. This year RIM eventually plans to offer around a half-dozen BlackBerry 10 devices, hitting the high, mid and low ends of the market.

As for carrier support in the United States, AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) have all said they are committed to supporting BlackBerry 10, although it's unclear exactly when each of those carriers will begin selling RIM's new phones.

RIM captured 5.3 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2012, according to research firm Gartner, down from 11 percent in the year-ago period.

SPOTLIGHT ON... The mobile payment race is on, but it's unclear which vendors will succeed

The gold rush to win the mobile payment race has attracted a lot of different companies, but it's still unclear which ones will succeed at this multi-billion dollar industry. The ecosystem is currently divided into two camps: vendor-driven and user-driven initiatives. The vendor-driven approach includes companies such as Square and PayPal, which offer devices that attach to a vendor's phone to process credit and debit cards. The user-driven services include companies such as Isis and Google Wallet, which incorporate mobile payments as a part of an ecosystem. In this in-depth feature, Fierce Associate Editor Sandhya Raman evaluates both models. Feature
