Welcome to the TechSmith Learning Lounge!

Welcome to the third issue of our new quarterly education newsletter written by educators, industry experts and those on the ground in education.

As we head into what we like to call 'event season', we are excited that we will be attending so many education shows in the next few months and are hoping to meet as many of you in person as possible!

So if you are planning to attend an upcoming education show, look for us. We will probably be there!

This issue of the TechSmith Learning Lounge has a focus on education technology uses and the benefits they often have for students. Thank you to our guest authors who submitted the articles for this quarter.

We are always looking for guest authors. Whether the authors are educators, administrators, students, parents, or someone in the field of education, we would love to share your thoughts and ideas with our growing audience!

We are particularly looking for educators to share your opinions with us on the hot button topics in education today.

  • What keeps you up at night?
  • What do you think the most important thing that U.S. education needs?
  • How would you fix problems in schools if you were in charge?

If you would like to write for us, please email education@techsmith.com and let us know what you would like to write about. And feel free to invite others to guest write as well.

Enough from us. On to the educators.

Happy reading!

Differentiation Through Flipped Out Collaboration
Zach Cresswell, Upper Level High School Math Teacher

Zach Cresswell As I was about to enter my second year of teaching and first year teaching AP Calculus, I called my former teacher, coach, and mentor Steve Kelly to pick his brain about some aspects of the curriculum. (Steve is a National Board Certified math teacher from St. Louis, MI.) We met at a small bakery and over lunch we discussed some of my concerns regarding teaching an AP course so early in my career. As the conversation evolved, however, we began talking about the other courses that we would each be teaching this year. We also discussed some of the problems with mathematics education today (lack of depth of understanding, problem solving perseverance, opportunities to engage in higher level thinking, etc.). The intersection of these two veins of the conversation led to an idea.

Why not take a course, precalculus in our case, and collaborate to integrate everything we truly believed should be in the modern math classroom?

Flipped Professional Development
Kristin Daniels, Technology Integration Specialist

Kristen DanielsStillwater's model of professional development came out of many weeks of discussion about how we wanted to spend our time with teachers. We wanted to address the challenges of traditional PD: experience, time, and follow-through. We wanted to move away from demonstrating the basics of technology tools and towards helping teachers reach more meaningful levels of technology integration by using technology in ways that transform learning in the classroom. We knew that in order to do this we had to spend our time with teachers talking about transformational practices and provide them with examples and ideas as well as support and encouragement along the way.

The Growing Acceptance of Online Education
Jordan Valley, Excel High School

For the past few decades, educational technology has had an increasingly important role in the classroom. But now, it seems as though that technology is establishing itself outside of the classroom, and it's taking the students with it.

Online education is the future. At least, that's what educators like Stanford Professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller seem to think. Ng and Koller joined together to launch the website Coursera in 2012. Coursera works with major colleges and universities across the nation to offer free, legitimate college courses to the public.

How screencasting has helped one student feel more prepared for college
Tiana Kadkhoda, Student

Tiana KadkhodaMilo of Croton, the early Olympian, was renowned for his legendary strength. Every day Milo would carry a calf on his back up a large mountain. As the calf matured into a full-grown bull, so did Milo's strength. Mathtrain.tv, a website that encourages kids to learn through teaching, was my calf. Starting with the first video I made while in sixth grade, as mathtrain.tv developed, I thrived.
