Pulp Paper Bike Helmet Posted: 15 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT Bobby Petersen, Tom Gottelier and Edward Thomas designed the Pulp Paper Helmet. It's made of recycled newspapers. Their helmet is meant for short term use and will survive only 6 hours in the rain. But once it starts to break down, you can just recycle it again. Link -via Unconsumption

When a policeman kept on farting in a police car, his colleagues were forced to roll down the window to escape the smell. But instead of fresh air, the waft of marijuana drifted in. Metro has the story: ‘All three officers’ suspicions were raised and they left the car to get some fresh air and find the cause of the cannabis smell. ‘Imagine the surprise on the faces of the occupants of the house further along the road when the officers, following their noses, found a cannabis factory with a crop worth £12,000.’ Seven people at the property in Leicester were arrested. Oh, and the cop who kept on farting? Metro explains: The officer with the wind problem had been on a high-protein diet after taking up body building. Link

Napkin Cartoons Posted: 14 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT John Matta draws cartoons on napkins daily. The results are simple and hilarious. In an interview about his work, Matta tells the story of how he got started: Two years ago I was eating at a Subway and watching a mother demand that the guy behind the counter give her free meat samples. She wanted to let her little boy taste them before ordering. If the child didn’t like the meat, he’d spit it out on the counter. If he liked the meat, he’d also spit it out on the counter, accompanied by an approving grunt. It was the most wonderful thing I’d ever witnessed. I felt I had to document the event so I drew it on a napkin. Then I started drawing more stuff on napkins. I kept showing them to my wife and finally she said, "You should really show these to other people besides me." So I set up a blog and began posting them. I Was Killed By A Shark In <i>Sharknado</i> Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT Ryan Budds is a comedian who recently moved to California. He won a contest at a small comedy club, and one of the prizes was a walk-on role in an Asylum film. Budds looked up what Asylum does, so he knew what to expect, but he didn't expect that they would give him a real job. I walked into The Asylum’s production office the next day and inquired about my prize, finding out that they had no idea of the agreement with the comedy club. One of the head honchos, David Latt, came out to talk to me (on rollerblades) and mentioned that he didn’t know about the contest but that he’d be happy to kill me off in their next film. We made plans to have me back on the big day, but I inquired further. “Hey, do you need an extra production assistant for that movie?” And they said, “Yep. You’re hired.” And that's how Budds came to be both infront of the camera and behind the scenes of the SyFy original movie Sharknado. Teenager Saves Kidnapped Little Girl Posted: 14 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT Temar Boggs of Gable Park Woods, Pennsylvania, heard that police and firefighters were frantically searching his neighborhood for a kidnapped 5-year old girl. He and his friends got on their bikes and joined in the search. During their search they encountered a driver behaving suspiciously: The car was on Gable Park and turned around when it got near the top of a hill toward Millersville Pike, where Boggs said several police officers were gathered with the kind of cart used to carry an injured football player off the field. The driver, an older white man, then began quickly turning onto and out of side streets connecting to Gable Park, Boggs said. The neighborhood is something of a maze; many of its streets are cul-de-sacs. Boggs got close enough to the car to see a little girl inside. Garcia was nearby. The driver looked at Boggs and Garcia, then stopped the car at Gable Park and Betz Farm Road and pushed the girl out of the car. The driver then drove off, Boggs said. Boggs said he didn't see where the car went. "She runs to my arms and said, 'I need to see my mommy,' " Boggs said. Boggs scooped the girl onto his shoulders and began riding the bike toward home, but then decided that wasn't safe, so he carried her and walked back while Garcia pedaled along, guiding the bike Boggs had been using. Send Pizza Posted: 14 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT Two-year-old Hazel is undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma at Children's Hospital in L.A. As a lark, her family helped her tape "Please Send Pizza" in her window. Yesterday, redditor ashortstorylong spotted the sign in the window of the hospital and took a picture. The picture made the front page and then went viral on social media. One thing led to another, and the fourth floor of the hospital received dozens of pizzas- enough pizzas for everyone! The hospital has issued a statement thanking donors, but says no more pizzas are needed. Link

Life-sized LIFE Posted: 14 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT The game of LIFE is about to get larger - much larger. Life-sized, in fact! The island of Yoron in Japan will host a life-size version of LIFE board game, where players will shuttle across the island in a bus to play along: As 2013 marks the 45th anniversary of the Game of Life in Japan, one island has decided to celebrate by turning the entire place into one big Game of Life board complete with spinners and play money. The life-sized Game of Life will be held from 20 July to 16 September on Yoron Island located just North of Okinawa. The impetus for this plan was the fact that the island is shaped like that hilly part of the game board where the spinner sits. Throughout these summer months, players will be given a map showing the game squares and an allotment of fake money like that used in the game. The players will then spin one of four wheels located around the island and proceed to that spot. At the end of the game, any play money left over can be converted into gift certificates. Link

Brewery Comes to the Rescue Posted: 14 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT The staff at Falmouth Aquarium in Cornwall, UK, began worrying about its animals when temperatures rose 3°C above normal and the marine creatures were showing signs of stress. They called on St. Austell Brewery for assistance. The aquarium's inhabitants, which include a lobster named Gary, only had a matter of time before they overheated and died according to marine biologist Chloe Kingston who works there. However, after an emergency call to the brewery, the oddly tried-and-tested method of using beer chilling equipment to cool the tanks has worked wonders. She said: "It's a massive relief, I was really worried when I realised our current chillers weren't coping. "So far the fish are just looking a bit grumpy but they wouldn't be able to stand long-term exposure to these temperatures – especially with the hot spell coming up. "What the St Austell Brewery has done is literally save our fish at the aquarium. The brewery has finished installing the equipment, which will be a permanent donation to the aquarium. When hot-dog cart owners are being threatened by closure by health inspectors, the Assembly Health Committee in California came up with the legal definition of a hot dog to help them out: The proposed change to state health laws spells it out: "'Hot dog' means a whole, cured, cooked sausage that is skinless or stuffed in a casing that may be known as a frankfurter, frank, furter, wiener, red hot, Vienna, bologna, garlic bologna or knockwurst and that may be served in a bun or roll." [...] The definition is needed so health departments can hold hot-dog vendors, who boil already cooked wieners, to a less-stringent sanitation standard than food stands that cook raw foods, such as bratwurst, said Justin Malan of the California Assn. of Environmental Health Administrators. Robot That Tears Down And Recycles Buildings Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT A new concept in robotics may improve the efficiency of building demolition and recycling. Swedish student designer Omer Haciomeroglu says that the robot called ERO is a smart recycling robot like Wall-E. The ERO can “efficiently disassemble concrete structures without any waste, dust or separation and enable reclaimed building materials to be reused for new prefabricated concrete buildings”. This is achieved using high-powered water jets to crack the concrete. The aggregate cement and water is then sucked up and separated. The water is recycled back into the system, while clean aggregate is packed and sent to concrete precast stations for reuse. The rebar can then be cleaned and cut on the spot to be reused. A fleet of ERO robots working together would be able to scan the surroundings and plan a route of action. Once they start working, the robots can “literally erase a building”. She writes: This piece, entitled Attached, is about the closeness that twins share during childhood. The little sweater sleeves grow into one another to emphasize this connection, and the piece (which is purely conceptual, rather than functional jewellery) actually physically attaches the wearers. The theme of my thesis work is about the unique bond that twins share, and depicts four “portraits” of me and my sister’s relationship at different stages in our lives so far.
