An Orchestra Built of Weapons

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Here's a great example of "beating swords into plowshares," or something close to it. Mexico City artist Pedro Reyes built a mechanized orchestra out of weapons! The project is titled Disarm.

The team acquired a variety of rifles, pistols, and shotguns seized from drug cartels by the Mexican army and used them to build the musical devices that are controlled by computers and can be pre-programmed to play music.

See more pictures, and a video of the orchestra in action, at Colossal. Link -via Digg

New York Pet Cemeteries Now Accept Human Remains

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 12:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Shawn Inglima/New York Daily News)

Even if you love your pets, it can be hard to spend eternity with them using conventional funeral arrangements. Kerry Vera, pictured above, has a solution: she wants her cremated remains fed to her dog as a means of doing so.

But if you live in the State of New York, you may not have to resort to such extreme measures. The state government now permits pet cemeteries to bury human remains:

The new rules resolve a two-year-old dispute that began when the state refused to allow the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in Westchester to accept the ashes of a former NYPD officer who wanted to spend his afterlife with his three Maltese pups.

The cop’s niece, upstate attorney Taylor York, took on her uncle’s cause and battled the state to allow the burial.

“People do get a sense of comfort from knowing they can lie for eternity with their beloved pet, that they can be loved and protected in the afterlife just as faithfully as when they were alive,” York said.

The Cosmoplanetary Messiah

Posted: 15 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Between the towns on Castellane and St. André in france, you can find an odd compound with statues that stand tall. There's one of Buddha at 72 feet and one of Jesus at 69 feet. But the tallest statue, called the Cosmoplanetary Messiah, is no longer there.

The messiah in question was Gilbert Bourdin who in 1969 founded the Aumism religion (considered by some to be a cult), which collages together the highlights of the world's religions. The walled city of Mandarom in France is the headquarters of Aumism, and there among the mosque, temple, and other clustered shrines of worship, the giant statue of Bourdin loomed until 2001. Unfortunately for the staggering statue, its builders hadn't acquired the appropriate permits, and after years of court battles it was ruled illegal.

Find out what happened to Bourdin, and his statue, at Atlas Obscura. Link

South Korean Government Workers Are Given Romance Training

Posted: 15 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT

How are you going to put on smooth moves that will impress a guy or gal? Well, don't look at me. I have no idea. But government employees in South Korea will get the chance to learn. The national government is moving large numbers of its workers to the interior of the country. Kim Hye Cheon, a professor urban engineering, explained how these workshops will help employees find love in their new homes:

The one-day lecture in Sejong was titled Romantic Strategies and Communication Skills and was a follow-up to a group blind date organised for single officials in June, said Kim Na Na, an official from the government department set up to smooth the Sejong transition who organised Tuesday's talk.

"The event is also a chance for singles to meet each other," Kim said. "Many unmarried employees have complained of difficulties in dating while living in Sejong."

During the group blind date in June, 30 participants played match-making games involving romantic questions, including favorite dating places, and shared their common emotions as Sejong-based workers, said Lee Jae Mok, a professional romance coach who led the meeting.

"They looked stiff and uncomfortable at first, but once they broke the ice, they really enjoyed themselves, putting aside public servants' typical formalities," Lee said. "More than half of them walked away with partners."

POLL: Should Neatorama offer its employees romance training?

  • Yes, it would improve company morale.
  • No, it should be harder, not easier, for you to reproduce.

The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary

Posted: 15 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT

In the Middle Ages, certain texts described a plant that grew lambs as fruit. Of course, it was said to grow far away, in uncivilized sections of Europe and Central Asia.

Medieval texts described two varieties of the Vegetable Lamb – the first produced little naked, newborn lambs inside its pods, and the other had a life-sized lamb, with bones, blood and flesh, attached by its belly button to a short plant stem. This stem was extremely flexible, so allowed the tethered lamb to graze on the vegetation around it. Once all the vegetation was eaten, or if the stem broke, the lamb would die.

The origin of the myth has been traced all the way back to 436, first mentioned as Adne Hasadeh (meaning ‘lords of the field’) in a Jewish text called Talmud Ierosolimitanum, or Jerusalem Talmund, by Rabbi Jochanan. Like wolves, hunters loved the Vegetable Lamb for its delicate flesh that tasted like fish and blood as sweet as honey. But it was impossible to separate it from its plant unless the stem has been severed. And it needed to be severed specifically with arrows or darts.

Variations on the legend call the fruit a human, tethered to the plant with a stem like an umbilical cord -primitive humans who would try to kill you. Read more about the vegetable lamb at Scientific American. Link -via Ed Yong

Cunning Plan Leaves Man Stranded on Ledge

Posted: 15 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

An unnamed man in Goosen's Close, Greater London, UK, arrived home late Thursday night and realized he was locked out of his home. That's when he should have called someone for help, but instead he hatched a ingenious scheme to get inside.

He decided the best course of action was to stack two wheelie bins on top of his car, climb them and get through his bathroom window.

The agile man managed to clamber up the two wheelie bins and got as far as the window ledge before realising he was too big to fit through the window.

His luck then got worse when his tower of wheelie bins collapsed leaving him stranded on the narrow ledge.

The story doesn't mention how long he was there before Sutton fire department was summoned. Firefighters managed to get the man down by ladder, and a smaller firefighter was able to fit through the window and unlock the door. Link -via Arbroath

Can A Hamster Drive A 15-Ton Truck?

Posted: 15 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

We've seen a hamster on a piano eating popcorn, but that's a far cry from one driving a dump truck with nothing more than a carrot to guide him. To be fair, he can't do too much damage as long as he has no control of the speed of the vehicle. Still, that's an impressive feat for a little critter like Charlie.

Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman on the series, posted this picture from the set of Breaking Bad on Instagram. No "spoiler," as all the cast members have been very good at not revealing upcoming details during the entire series. That, and the fact that Skyler is smiling, is a dead giveaway that this is just three actors having fun between scenes. Link -via Uproxx
