| The Slanted Trees of Slope Point Posted: 16 Sep 2013 04:00 AM PDT
Slope Point is the southernmost point of the southern island of New Zealand. The winds blow fiercely, but also consistently from the south. Consequently, trees there grow leaning toward the north. You can see more photos of them at the link.
| Posted: 16 Sep 2013 03:00 AM PDT Here's a great example of "beating swords into plowshares," or something close to it. Mexico City artist Pedro Reyes built a mechanized orchestra out of weapons! The project is titled Disarm.
See more pictures, and a video of the orchestra in action, at Colossal. Link -via Digg
| Natalie Sampson's Paint Roller Lamps Posted: 16 Sep 2013 02:00 AM PDT It's a lamp! But you may not believe it until you've seen it turned on. Natalie Sampson makes furniture and light fixtures from unexpected objects, such as paint rollers, pots and dish brushes. | ||||||||
| Posted: 16 Sep 2013 01:00 AM PDT Looking for a Halloween costume for your pooch that is less encumbering than most? Then consider this adorable Frankenstein dog hat by Etsy seller iheartneedlework -the shop also has fashioanable pet costumes for cats and guinea pigs. | ||||||||
| New York Pet Cemeteries Now Accept Human Remains Posted: 16 Sep 2013 12:00 AM PDT
Even if you love your pets, it can be hard to spend eternity with them using conventional funeral arrangements. Kerry Vera, pictured above, has a solution: she wants her cremated remains fed to her dog as a means of doing so. But if you live in the State of New York, you may not have to resort to such extreme measures. The state government now permits pet cemeteries to bury human remains:

| Marching Band Performs "The Fox" Posted: 15 Sep 2013 11:00 PM PDT What does the fox say? The Ohio University Marching 110 performed the Ylvis song "The Fox" at the game against Marshall Saturday. And why not? The song is on the Billboard Hot 100 due to its internet popularity. -via Daily Picks and Flicks | ||||||||

| Minimalist Posters of Great Mathematicians Posted: 15 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT Your kids don't like math? Maybe it's because math suffers from a bit of branding problem. That's where Hydrogene (previously on Neatorama) stepped in with this gorgeous set of minimalist posters of great mathematicians. Now that's hip! | ||||||||
| An 8-Bit Game of Thrones Video Game Posted: 15 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT While there are plenty of 8-bit game parodies of tv shows, this one goes beyond a trailer and you can actually download the game at the link. The game was created by comic artist Abel Alves and allows you to play through a number of storylines in the books/TV show. | ||||||||

| Posted: 15 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT Between the towns on Castellane and St. André in france, you can find an odd compound with statues that stand tall. There's one of Buddha at 72 feet and one of Jesus at 69 feet. But the tallest statue, called the Cosmoplanetary Messiah, is no longer there.
Find out what happened to Bourdin, and his statue, at Atlas Obscura. Link
| South Korean Government Workers Are Given Romance Training Posted: 15 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT How are you going to put on smooth moves that will impress a guy or gal? Well, don't look at me. I have no idea. But government employees in South Korea will get the chance to learn. The national government is moving large numbers of its workers to the interior of the country. Kim Hye Cheon, a professor urban engineering, explained how these workshops will help employees find love in their new homes:

| Blue Cheese Lollipops: Because Sometimes We Need Savory Sweets Posted: 15 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT Tailgates with blue cheese dressing and buffalo wings are great, but sometimes you need something a little more portable -like a blue chese lollipop. These wonderful concoctions were created by the fine folks at Lolliphile, the company who has also created absinthe, sriracha and maple bacon. | ||||||||
| Hand Lotion Bento and Many More Impressive Lunches Posted: 15 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT RocketNews 24 has a roundup of the best works of bento. Many make great use of nori, an edible seaweed that can be cut into precise shapes, including text. Content warning: one work is pretty gory. It bleeds when you cut it. | ||||||||
| Posted: 15 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT In the Middle Ages, certain texts described a plant that grew lambs as fruit. Of course, it was said to grow far away, in uncivilized sections of Europe and Central Asia.
Variations on the legend call the fruit a human, tethered to the plant with a stem like an umbilical cord -primitive humans who would try to kill you. Read more about the vegetable lamb at Scientific American. Link -via Ed Yong

He creates bas relief images of dreamy, ethereal scenes from those tropical islands and other beaches around the Pacific. You can see many more examples of his work at the link.

The story doesn't mention how long he was there before Sutton fire department was summoned. Firefighters managed to get the man down by ladder, and a smaller firefighter was able to fit through the window and unlock the door. Link -via Arbroath

| Can A Hamster Drive A 15-Ton Truck? Posted: 15 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT We've seen a hamster on a piano eating popcorn, but that's a far cry from one driving a dump truck with nothing more than a carrot to guide him. To be fair, he can't do too much damage as long as he has no control of the speed of the vehicle. Still, that's an impressive feat for a little critter like Charlie. | ||||||||
| Posted: 15 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman on the series, posted this picture from the set of Breaking Bad on Instagram. No "spoiler," as all the cast members have been very good at not revealing upcoming details during the entire series. That, and the fact that Skyler is smiling, is a dead giveaway that this is just three actors having fun between scenes. Link -via Uproxx | ||||||||
