Cisco is looking to put more definition around it, launching a new business unit to tackle some of the interesting challenges. Connecting everything to everything would simply produce an unmanageable flood of data. Cisco VP Guido Jouret, who will head the new unit, tells InformationWeek that intelligent data management is one key puzzle to be solved. It's important to prioritize by determining which devices can become more effective due to interconnectivity, and then create the necessary standards, algorithms and engineering designs to deliver that value. Security is often cited as a huge problem when, for example, industrial control systems are networked. Jouret argues that the Internet of Things, properly executed, could increase security rather than decrease it by distributing more intelligence to the edge of the network. Cisco pushed its new business unit at its first Internet of Things World Forum this week in Barcelona. How to upgrade from 10G Ethernet Ready for more bandwidth? Big data, video, mobile device proliferation--today's tech trends demand big pipes. The switch from 10G Ethernet to 40G or 100G requires attention to some very particular details, writes Jim Duffy at Network World. The most obvious is cabling--make sure your physical infrastructure is ready for higher throughput or bottlenecks will happen. Shaun Walsh, a VP at Emulex, notes that 100G is significantly different at the physical layer; while 40G Ethernet consists of four 10G "lanes", 100G is four 25G lanes, which requires a "a whole new generation of optics, cables, everything." Precise synchronization of the clocks on network switches is another requirement. A small difference can result in latency and packet loss even for 10G networks; the impact goes up by orders of magnitude at 40G. Intelligent load-balancing becomes more important as well. Network tools including monitoring and security will have to keep up with the increased flow, or, again, bottlenecks can occur. The result of missing critical details may be that you don't realize the full value of the upgrade. SDN's impact might be different, more profound, than you imagine Software-defined networking might flatten your network and make resource allocation a breeze. But it might do something more than that. And various experts and prognosticators have differing opinions of what. Arthur Cole rounds up some of these views on Enterprise Networking Planet. For example: SDNs are an opportunity to put APIs and services as close to the end user as possible, according to Vodaphone's Michael Burger. Performance and response times could benefit. On the other hand, a 'single-layer' resource pool raises security and reliability concerns. Tom Nolle of CIMI asks "Why couldn't you attack a resource pool by spoofing status messages that made the resource appear to be down, or make a single resource look available to everyone no matter what its state?" Nolle's point, detailed on his blog, is not that this resource approach is bad or good, but that "cooperation in a distributed [environment] doesn't come easy." Feds need to get it together with enterprise architecture Federal agencies are required to take an enterprise architecture approach to IT, combining strategic planning, business requirements and technology. But these plans need to be better formalized and shared in order to facilitate shared services across agencies, said Federal Chief Enterprise Architect Scott Bernard, speaking at a conference in D.C. last week. In fact, Bernard went on to note that the use of competing architectures perpetuates the type of silos that currently exist. The use of multiple email, accounting and help desk systems, for example, indicates that shared services--and the resulting efficiency--are not a priority for government agencies. Bernard cited a number of government initiatives that would benefit from sound enterprise architecture: the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative, the White House's digital strategy and the Office of Management and Budget's PortfolioStat review process. Is it intelligent to put business intelligence in the cloud? Business intelligence in the cloud--according to its fans, it's easier and faster to spin up than an in-house solution. Okay, the 'fans' cited by CloudPro include cloud BI vendors. Still, Gartner also predicts fast growth for BI Platform-as-a-Service over the next few years. But getting the benefits requires getting the right data together in the first place and a few other key considerations.
