Other National, Regional and Global Human Development Reports

International Business Times: UN Warns Peru: GDP Growth is Harming the Environment
Peru is a paradox. According to a report by the United Nations, the country's economy is growing fast and Peruvians have more money than ever. But they have insufficient health care and low education, and Peru's environment is suffering from all the development. According to the U.N. Development Program, the Andean country is highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change, and most of the activities that have generated its recent growth -- like mining or construction, both legally and illegally -- are deeply harmful to the environment.

Al Bawaba (Middle East): Can the Arab world actually escape the 9-5 employment framework?
According to statistics released this year by the United Nations Human Development Report for 2011, unemployment for youths (ages 15 to 24) is 22 percent in the United Arab Emirates, 23 percent in Lebanon, 46 percent in Saudi Arabia and 47 percent in Jordan. The figures are even more dismal when taking into account women, at least 70 percent of whom are eligible to work, but don't.

Africa Review: Will e-publishing help Africa discover the joy of reading?
Today, one of the countries to have turned the page on the past is Nigeria. This year's Human Development Report revealed that more than a quarter of the 170 million population are now online, heralding the dawn of a new publishing era. "The proliferation of smartphones across Africa, combined with the inevitable burst into e-commerce, means that we would be foolish to ignore what is about to happen with publishing in Africa," said Jeremy Weate, of Abuja-based Cassava Republic, publisher of fiction, non-fiction and children's books.

Human Development Index

Irish Times: Our dystopian view of Ireland
We believe that the 2013 UN Human Development Index that ranks countries in terms of wealth, health, education, happiness and safety puts Ireland in 35th place. The fact is we rank seventh. To complete this rather dystopian view of Ireland as a place to live, the majority also believe that the number of medical cards issued has decreased, that hospital waiting lists have increased and that the crime and murder rates have risen. Not true either.

The Hindu: New index to gauge development based on caste
The ongoing exercise of compiling the District Human Development Report (DHDR) for the 30 districts in the State will, for the first time, have a new index to measure development on the matrix of caste, with one case study from each district. This model looks at six dimensions under Composite Dalit Development Index: Inclusion (social and institutional), discrimination (perception, protest and resolution), freedom (social, political, economic and cultural), standard of living (land and non-agricultural sources of income), gender (pre and post-delivery care, reproductive health support) and access to basic facilities (education, housing and sanitation).

United Nations and Development Issues

Brookings Institute: Climate Change Negotiations in Warsaw Result in a Timeline for Agreement in 2015
Small steps toward an agreement on climate change in 2015 were made at the recent 19th Conference of Parties (COP19) talks in Warsaw, Poland over the past two weeks. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference was extremely tense, with emotions running high after the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the frustrations over slow-moving texts and the explosive new issues on the table such as "loss and damage."

Asharq Al-Awsat (Saudi Arabia): Arab Water Crisis to affect human development: UNDP report
The Arab world is facing an escalating water crisis that demands quick answers in order to avoid major humanitarian consequences, a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report warned this week. The report, entitled Water Governance in the Arab Region: Managing Scarcity and Securing the Future, revealed that out of a total of 22 countries, 15 regional states fall into the "water poor" category, while the situation in seven other states is described as "deteriorating."
