Game Of Thrones Advertising Fail

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 12:00 AM PDT

A note to those in charge of advertising for Game of Thrones- be careful where you place your billboard ads or you might not get a very kind reception from the people.

It seems someone dropped the ball when they decided to put up this billboard advertising season 4 of GoT with the slogan “All Men Must Die”, because the billboard is located right above the Santa Monica Pavilion, a building that provides residential care for the elderly.

I’m sure plenty of people will be watching when the show premieres in early April, but I doubt many of the viewers are going to be senior citizens with an advertising slogan like that!

Officially Licensed Klingon Beer

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 09:00 PM PDT

Scotty preferred scotch. If not that, then something green would do.

(Image: CBS Consumer Products)

But Klingons? Well actual bloodwine can kill a human who isn’t careful. So this officially licensed beer dubbed Warnog has been watered down for the sake of delicate human constitutions. It’s a product of the Tin Man Brewing Company in Evansville, Indiana. Hollywood Reporter’s Graeme McMillan describes it as a blend of “rye malt with a traditional clove character.” The beer will be officially unveiled and consumed starting on March 25 at the Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas.

Remember to drink responsibly. Don’t slip behind the helm of a starship after you’ve had a single drink.

Helpful Charts for Game of Thrones

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Despite George R.R. Martin’s bloodthirsty desire to depopulate Westeros, it can be hard to keep track of all of the characters in Game of Thrones. Who is related to whom? What are they trying to accomplish? You need charts to keep everything straight. Thankfully, Tom Phillips and Robin Edds of BuzzFeed are here to help. They made 12 charts that keep characters sorted and track the development of the story. You can view the rest here.

Graph TV

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT

How is your favorite TV show doing? The application Graph TV will show you in just a few seconds. See every episode, separated by season, graphed by its IMDb ratings. You can see here how the show Breaking Bad struggled at the beginning, then found its footing with fans. At the site, you can click on a dot and go to the IMDb page for that episode. The very highest-rated Breaking Bad episode is "Ozymandias," as fans would have guessed, with "Felina" in second place. I tried to stump the graphs, putting in older and older shows. Below is the graph for The Andy Griffith Show.

You can see how the show just ran out of stream when Don Knotts left and color was added, even though the Neilsen ratings remained high. The oldest TV show I could think of was The Amos ’n Andy Show -and it graphed, too! I guess IMDb fans take every show, as well as every movie, seriously. Check it out and see what your favorite series looks like. -via Laughing Squid

The Family Album Of Lucybelle Crater

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard spent the better part of the 50s and 60s putting together this apocalyptic family portrait series, using his own family members as the subjects in a creepy collection that was way ahead of its time.

His wife wore an old hag mask and played the role of Lucybelle Crater, while other friends and family members donned masks and played along, creating the kind of family portraits only the Manson family could love.

The entire Family Album of Lucybelle Crater was collected in book form in 1974, two years after Meatyard's death, and I can’t help but wonder how many people received the book as a gift or bought a copy on a recommendation, then found the whole thing too disturbing to keep in the house!

Playing Ping Pong with a Cat

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT

(vimeo link)

The title does not mean that someone is playing table tennis against a cat. Two people are playing, and they happen to have a cat. And you know how cats are, they want to be all up in the middle of everything, especially if it involves a moving object. This cat’s name is Oreo, and she thinks she should play, too. Or rather, she thinks she should catch the ball and declare herself the winner. After watching this, I’ve decided that unless you have serious points to score, playing “with a cat” might be the most fun way to play table tennis! -via Tastefully Offensive

60 Ways to Upcycle Old Sewing Machine Tables

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT

My grandmother owned a treadle-powered sewing machine. I think that it was a Singer. She once let me sew a few stitches with it. What a delight! It was like going back in time.

Those old treadle sewing machines didn't break easily. Even if electric sewing machines outpaced them, the foot-powered machines stayed in homes around the world. Many craftsmen have remade them into desks, tables, bars, bookshelves and more. Penny Carlson turned hers pictured above into an attractive parlor table

This is only 1 of 60 treadle sewing machines remade for modern uses. You can find the rest at Recyclart.

Could You Have Said It Better?

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Is this English? It should be, because the picture from Nothing To Do With Arbroath is labeled Camp Pendleton Dining Hall. The Sodexo Management at the bottom refers to the French multinational corporation that supplies meals for restaurants and institutions like schools, prisons, and military bases. Don’t you think they could have worded it better? Here's my quick attempt:

No take-out with sit-down meals. To go orders cannot be eaten here.

How would you have said the same thing more clearly?

Geekapella Presents - Robocop Theme 1987

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

What’s the one thing that was missing from both the original and the remake version of Robocop? Some will say wizards, others will say aliens, but a select few will claim that what both movies were sorely lacking is some good ol' fashioned a capella style singing.

They are the Andy Bernards of the world, the Burton Gusters, the Carlton Banks’s’s, and they are the target audience for Max and Sam’s Geekapella version of the Robocop Theme (1987).

The date’s there to remind you that this song is dedicated to the original movie, and the dancing in the video- well, that’s just there to remind everyone that Max and Sam really know how to get down!

Comparing March Madness Schools

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT

If you’re just barely following the NCAA National Basketball Tournament, I am glad to announce that Kentucky defeated #1 seed Wichita State last night to advance to the Sweet 16. But life is more than sports, and college is more than basketball. And there are other tournaments that compare the same schools by parameters other than basketball. This is important when your selecting a college.

MyLife set up a bracket to compare the 68 college towns represented in the NCAA bracket. The crunched with measurements like the school’s ability to fill an arena for a game, graduation rates, and number of restaurants and bars. Each matchup is explained, and one winner is crowned …but many nice college towns advanced far into the tournament.

Those towns may be nice places to live, but can you afford to go to school there? The Awl presents a tuition bracket, featuring the schools of the NCAA tournament. In each matchup, the school with the higher tuition advances, so the whole thing is already filled out. The winner has an annual tuition of $47,290! And I’m pretty sure these figures don’t count room and board, because my daughters have already gotten estimates from some of these schools. The differences between the 64 schools are startling.

The Thomson Reuters Company presents Metrics Mania. The point is to guess which schools have the most research impact on science and technology. We won’t have the winner until April 8 because this is a contest. Entries are closed, but you can follow the bracket as each round of winners is revealed. Each round looks at a different parameter. First and second rounds: which school in each matchup is cited more in scientific publications. In the third and fourth rounds, which school has the higher percentage of their studies cited. The fourth round will reveal which school has the highest normalized citation impact.

These might not be the best comparisons to decide which college to attend, but they give us quite a bit of information, at least about the schools under the spotlight in March.

Whodunit: The Burning Bungalow

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PDT

The following is a Whodunit by Hy Conrad featuring Jonah Bixby, a twelve-year-old crime solver and son of a police detective. Can you solve the crime?

(Image credit: Flickr user Howard Jefferson)

"Mom, please, I've never been inside a fire scene," Jonah whined.

"And you're not getting into this one," Carol said flatly. They were standing in front of a small bungalow on Beaverton's north side. The charred walls were still standing, but the fire had been intense enough to kill the home's single resident, a pretty, young waitress named Sarah Simmons who had lived there with her beloved cat. The arson investigator was here to determine if it was an accident or not, while Detective Bixby was on hand to oversee the removal of the body and preserve the scene, in case it proved to be homicide.

Jonah's mother joined the other investigators inside the bungalow, leaving him alone on the porch. "I tried to stop her, but she wouldn't listen," said a choked voice from behind him. Jonah turned to see a nervous little man with a thin, hawk-like face. He introduced himself as Billy Borenson, Sarah's neighbor.

"I just came home from the grocery store when I saw the fire." He pointed to his car, parked haphazardly in the driveway of the bungalow next door. "Her house was filled with flames. They were coming out the windows. I'm the one who called 911," he said, rather proudly. "I guess everyone else on the block was at work or something."

Jonah had no reason not to like Billy Borenson, but he didn't need a reason. The guy just seemed creepy. "What do you mean, you tried to stop her?"

"Oh, I mean Sarah. I would have gone in to save her, you know. But she came out just as I was about to. We stood on the lawn together, just waiting for the fire engines. And then I was dumb enough to ask about her cat, Mr. Tibbs. Before I could stop her, Sarah was running back in the house, calling for her cat."

"Why didn't you go in after her?" Jonah asked. He was a little irritated by the man's false boasts of bravery.

"That would've been suicide," Borenson said. "There were flames everywhere, even on the floor..." He stopped as he saw a younger man running up the driveway. "Uh-oh," he whispered to Jonah. "That's Sarah's boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend, I mean."

The man joined them on the porch, looking dazed. "What happened?" he asked, looking through the doorway and into the charred house. "I was here just an hour ago."

"I know," said Billy Borenson. "I could hear you and Sarah fighting from my house."

"What Sarah and I do is none of your business," the boyfriend snapped.

"Maybe," said Borenson. "But you were pretty mad. The firefighters think it might have been started by a cigarette in a trash can." Jonah's head was at about the same height as the boyfriend's chest, and he could easily see a pack of cigarettes stuffed into his shirt pocket.

"Really?" The boyfriend shrugged. "Where's Sarah?"

Neither Borenson nor Jonah had to answer that question, for just a second later two officers emerged through the doorway carrying a black plastic body bag. "Sarah!" the boyfriend shouted and almost dove at the bag.

"Please, sir, step back," said one of the officers. But Sarah's boyfriend stayed with them, calling out her name, all the way to the medical examiner's van.

Jonah looked back into the house. His mother and the arson investigator stood on the blackened remains of the living room rug. Right by their feet was a perfectly preserved piece of green carpet outlining the spot where Sarah's body had been lying.

Jonah wanted to go in and maybe have a look around. But he restrained himself. A few minutes later, Carol Bixby came out. "They think it's arson," she said simply. "So this is a murder scene."

"I know."

Carol recognized that tone of voice. "Okay, Jonah. What exactly do you know?"

WHOM DOES JONAH SUSPECT OF MURDER?

WHAT WAS THE CLUE?

Commuting Would Be Better If You Could Ride A Giant Cat To Work

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Morning commutes can be rough, especially when you're riding public transportation to work, but it would all be so much more enjoyable if you could ride a giant cat to work!

You'd finally be able to catch up on the sleep you've been missing, the cat would provide you with a bath if you didn't have time to take one before work, and if giant rats attack the city you're sitting pretty atop your own rodent devouring machine.

This pleasantly ridiculous Japanese commercial for Lotte's Fit gum, who claims chewing will put you in a good mood, but if you can ride a giant cat to work without being in a good mood you're either allergic to cats or you'd prefer to ride the puppy to work.

A Most Excellent Goldfish

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Redditor brovanz got a new goldfish that came with eyebrows that won't quit, and a marking on the mouth that can be interpreted as a frowning mouth or a lush mustache. You have to admit that's an impressive goldfish. Other redditors were quick to name him, and to draw him. Continue reading to see their work.

Someone suggested that the fish looked like the classic villain who tied a damsel to the railroad tracks. DOWNVOTE_TRAWL responded with this sketch.

Then Lee_Vee did it, too.

IDraw5minutesEarlier drew what I suppose would actually be five minutes later.

MostExaltedLoaf gave the fish a cigar and glasses.

When brovanz posted another picture, GhostDays responded by giving him a makeover. And then a monocle and a pipe.

FmMan3 thought the fish resembled Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters.

And the name? Suggestions include Kanye, Angry Steve, Adolf Fishler, and Mr. Grumpy Gills. But the overwhelming favorite was Groucho, so he is now Groucho.

Animal Sculptures Made Out Of Plastic Beach Litter

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Cleaning up the beach can be fun- if you’re planning to make an awesome sculpture out of the litter when you’re done! These colorful animal sculptures were created by French artist Gilles Cenazandotti, and each one is made from plastic litter and odd bits of trash the artist “recycled” from beaches.

He calls the series Future Bestiary, and the animals which star in the series don’t look trashy at all, in fact it’s crazy how much detail and expression Gilles is able to capture in a well put together pile of waste.

These sculptures are a great example of what can be done with a bunch of junk, a bit of creativity and a ton of glue, but it’s sad how much plastic trash he was able to find on his local beaches.

My Way Back Home

Posted: 24 Mar 2014 06:30 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Nicolas Foubert had been traveling the world for 19 months, but decided to go home to France in time to surprise his sister for her birthday. It was the perfect opportunity to record some travel footage. He sent the video to his sister just in time for his arrival, and then blended the footage of the reunion into the video of his journey. The result is both beautiful and touching.

So I looked it up. The distance from Guatemala City to Paris is 5,586 miles, but you can't get a direct flight, so it’s actually more. Maybe that’s why Foubert flew out of Mexico, or maybe it’s because he wanted to add some more awesome trip footage. Guatemala City to Mexico City is a 15-hour drive. Any way you look at it, it’s a long journey, but the payoff is awesome when your family misses you. -via Daily Picks and Flicks
