Come experience the heart and soul of Cuban Jazz on our "Jazzing in Cuba" excursion. Departing from Miami on October 30th, we will be traveling around Havana, Cuba for 5 days with the other jazz fans. Experiences include the world famous Tropicana Show, Palace of the Revolution, the Old Havana walking tour, a trip through Papa Hemmingway's farm, and opportunities to discover exclusive Cuban Jazz events for this trip only.

Jazz at Lincoln Center: Father of the Mambo: The Music of Cachao Lopez

Monday, Aug 4 , 6PM  

"Mambo," translated from Kikongo (the Creole language of Cuba), means "conversation with the gods." With Afro-Cuban rhythms and other notes from this divine conversation, Cuban bassist "Cachao" Lopez (and his brother) enlightened the jazz world and brought forth the mambo; Stay tune as Wendell Pierce hosts.

Musician and early jazz scholar Vince Giordano fell in love with twenties and thirties jazz at an early age and carries on the tradition performing with his band "The Nighthawks."  Vince discusses bringing this music to a broader audience and especially the importance of young people hearing jazz live.

Roots of Smooth: Toots Thielemans
Wednesday, Aug 6, 6PM
Born in Brussels, Belgium on April, 29 1922. He played accordion as a child and started playing harmonica as a hobby. Toots originated a new sound by whistling and playing the guitar in unison, which he did for commercials; the best known is "Old Spice," and in 1962 he composed "Bluesette" receiving several awards.

Eric Alexander

Eric Alexander started piano lessons at the age of six. He took up the clarinet at nine and switched to alto sax three years later. The tenor sax became his obsession at Indiana University Bloomington (1986-87). After transferring to William Paterson College in New Jersey he studied with Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others.
