Rainbow Colored Sheep Beneath a Rainbow

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 04:00 AM PDT

In his youth, photographer Gray Malin once heard of a Scottish shepherd who dyed the wool of his sheep in order to make them more visible at night and thus less easily stolen. This story rolled around in his head for years until it came into fruition as the "Dream Series."

Malin dyed a flock of sheep bright, vibrant colors. Then he photographed them as they moved around. The results are magical in appearance, as though these animals have become mysterious cryptids passing into our world only temporarily.

Mesmerizing Architectural Photography by Markus Studtmann

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Berlin-based photographer Markus Studtmann dissects and reconstructs architectural images to produce the hypnotic art pieces you see here. He calls his process "painting with light." Studtmann, in addition to being an accomplished artist/photographer, is also a psychologist with a PhD in psychology. Perhaps it gives him an edge in making photos that produce visceral reactions and demand attention.

According to his website, Studtmann "loves the process of finding the perfect composition and experimenting in the digital darkroom to the sound of good music and the smell of tasty coffee in the air." Sounds like my kind of guy! If you're a photography enthusiast, be sure to visit Studtmann's website and his 500px site

Turtle Recall by Adho1982

There's a mean little brain named Krang who came to Earth looking for freebies but found a way to take over the world. His brain was a mighty instrument of terror, but his body wasn't much to look at, so he built himself a tough guy suit so he could blend in with the Earthlings. He remained undetected for a while, setting his evil his plans into action, but Krang wasn't counting on four green Earthlings with shells on their backs foiling his mind games...

5 Biggest Video Game Bosses

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Sometimes, one of the coolest parts of a video game is when you finally reach the boss fight. Since the earliest years in gaming, video game bosses have truly evolved. Where once they were a pixel, slightly larger than you, now bosses can sometimes be larger than the screen. Just a massive beast who wants nothing more than to crush you like a bug under its thumb.

Luckily, over the years, the good guys have gotten considerably more talented, too, and often show these lumbering creatures who the REAL boss is. YouTube User Qubimaxima assembled this very cool video list of massive end bosses from recent video games. The best part is, he feels no need to exposition much over the bosses or why they are here. He just lets their massive size speak for itself.

(YouTube Link)

I will say, there is something incredibly gratifying about taking down some massive beast who wants nothing more to destroy you. But you don't have to be a game geek like me to appreciate the design of some of these bosses, or just marvel at their size.

A Morbid Look at 25 Writers Who Killed Themselves

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 10:00 PM PDT

Though it is a morbid subject most would rather just avoid, it would be almost foolhardy to ignore the number of famous writers and authors who have taken their own lives. What is the correlatiom between suicide and writing? Though I have some theories myself, they are simply that. Theories. But to deny the impact suicide has had on literature would be to deny a huge part of its history.

Over at The L Magazine there is a list of 25 famous authors who killed themselves, and I bet there are a few entries on the list you did not know. I am not pointing out this article to be unqiely morbid or to sadden anyone. It just seems to me that once we can recognize this epidemic facing writers, maybe we can me more aware on how we can potentially change that.

Enlightenment is the first step toards change.

I am not sure if that is true, as I just made it up. Regardless, this article will make you stop and maybe rethink just how much you THINK you want to be a writer. There are, in fact, several hazards hat go along with this field.

One of those being, apprently, suicide.

Long-Haired Dachshund Luxuriates Under Bathroom Faucet

This long-haired dachshund is apparently the unicorn of dogs: one that loves to bathe. This dog adorably mimics a human in the way she throws her head back and looks up to a shower head as the relaxing warm water rolls down. I've seen dogs who like to swim, but very few who like to bathe. If my dogs were that easy to get under a faucet, I wouldn't pay to have them groomed. -Via Tastefully Offensive

9 Clever Ways To Make Stuff Out Of Other Stuff

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Okay, I admit that wasn't the best title I've ever come up with, but short of calling these things "object hacks" I just didn't know how to perfectly describe making stuff out of stuff.

However, turning old useless stuff into shiny new stuff is totally fun, and a great way to show off your crafty side while being eco-friendly!

1. Chip bag hair bow-

You don't have to be a fashion expert to know that hair bows are always in style, and if you're out of chips and out of style then you're in luck! With a little crafty know-how and a mirror you've got one tasty hair accessory!

(Image Link)

2. Upcycled jeans tablet sleeve-

Losing an old pair of jeans is like losing a good friend, but you can turn that frown upside down by turning your old jeans into a snazzy denim tablet sleeve. It looks even cooler if your jeans are worn or covered in patches.

Tutorial Link

3. Playing card top hat-

Heading out to poker night but you don't have a thing to wear? Grab a deck of cards, some scissors and a stapler and you've got all you need to make a sweet playing card top hat that'll make your friends flush with envy!

Tutorial Link

Only the bravest souls attempt this master trainer level build- a brimmed Pokemon card hat simply oozing with swagger! Got game? This kid certainly does!

(Image Link)

4. Adorable Lego Storage container-

LEGO stuff is expensive! But why buy retail when you've got the makings of a you-tail upcycling in your kitchen?

With a clean plastic tub (the kind that usually hold pretzels or cheese puffs), some paint, some stencils and a little effort you've got a really cool LEGO container that's really affordable!

Tutorial Link

5. Plastic shopping bag dress-

Don't you hate it when you're out shopping and you suddenly lose every stitch of clothing you're wearing?

Make a skirt by stringing bags along a belt made of plastic bags, tie on over plastic bag bodice and you're ready for the bakery department ball!

(Image Link)

The plastic bag dress is kind of a free-for-all- sometimes it looks good, other times it looks really corny:

(Image Link)

6. Hair raising balloons-

Are you tired of having your thick, hot hair hanging on your neck? Employ a squadron of balloons to give that heavy hair a lift!

(Image Link)

Admit it- you wish you'd thought of this one when you were at Burning Man last year...

7. T-shirt dress-

You may have seen variations on this theme being done all wrong by trashy people all across the country, but the end result of this t-shirt dress tutorial actually looks pretty good!

(Image Link)

Take note People of Walmart- this is the only appropriate way to wear a t-shirt as a dress!

8. Plastic jug painter's buddy-

The plastic jug painter's buddy doesn't look all that great, but it's a great idea! They're a real life savor when your home improvement projects involve painting, and you can recycle them when you're done!

(Image Link)

Or, if you prefer your paintings on canvas a Pringle's can is the perfect size to hold all of your brushes, and with a few quick modifications nobody will be able to tell it used to house a snack stack!

Tutorial Link

9. Plastic bottle piggies-

It seems like there are always plastic bottles lying around our homes, and each week we throw them in the recycling bin without a second thought.

But what if you could upcycle them by turning them into cute little piggy planters, would you still toss them out?

These piggy planters add a touch of whimsy to your garden, they replace the plastic pots you normally buy from a garden store, and when they've outlived their usefulness you can toss them in the recycling bin.

Why buy new stuff when there's plenty of old stuff all around us that can be turned into new stuff? Be eco-friendly and crafty at the same time- reuse whenever possible!

Invasion of the Robot Cheerleaders

Leave it to Japan to give us a crew of adorable little robot cheerleaders! Or actually, they’d be more correctly called a drill team, since they don’t jump, but instead perform a dance of precision formations while their glowing pompons change colors. And they have a backstory: they are “elementary students full of energy and curiosity,” and are open to accepting new members.

Murata Manufacturing created the Murata Cheerleaders to show off the company’s gyro sensors, which keep the robots balanced, and communication technology, which keeps them dancing together. -via Geeks Are Sexy

12 Hilarious Reactions to iPhone Bendgate

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Seems a great many folks are not too impressed with the fact that you can just bend the new iPhone and it stays bent. In other words, once your new Iphone gets bent somehow in your pocket, you will then have a bent phone. Not just in theory, but in your actual pocket. Again, to reiterate. It does not bend back to the original shape.

This is a massive flaw that many internet sites and other competing companies have jumped on almost immediately, resulting in what will now be called "bendgate." The website Oddee thought it might be fun to gather some of the best iPhone 6 "bendgate" photos and assembled them all into one place for you. The abve photo Samsung quickly put out after the bend news leaked is just one of many spot on parodies of the new iPhone's unofficial bend feature.

I know those of you who rushed out and bought the phone that day must be upset. The rest of us who are still using our old phones think all this is hilarious. Sorry. Sometimes being poor pays off. The rich people run the beta tests on products for their first years, then when all the bugs are worked out, it is years later and the rest of us can finally afford it. Thanks for that!

Computer Users Sign Over First-Born Child in Exchange for Free Wi-Fi

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Wait--did you read the terms and conditions before you clicked to agree to them? If you had, you might have spotted this passage:

In using this service, you agree to relinquish your first born child to F-Secure, as and when the company requires it. In the event that no children are produced, your most beloved pet will be taken instead. The terms of this agreement stand for eternity.

Oops! Well, the upside is that you now have free Wi-Fi access from F-Secure, a computer security company. Also, you won't have to spend as much money on Christmas this year.

(Images: F-Secure)

To promote its services, F-Secure assembled a simple Wi-Fi hotspot, which is pictured above, from about $200 in parts. Company representatives took it to a busy shopping mall and convention center in London. In half an hour, they recorded 32 MB of data, such as passwords and private messages, from passersby who logged into their hotspot.

(Video Link)

They deleted the information, of course. But that didn't diminish their point: your electronic information isn't necessarily secure if you use free Wi-Fi.

Skateboard Sculpture by Hiroshi

This artist, who goes by the name Haroshi, fell in love with skateboarding at an early age, and is still active in the sport. He found a way to repurpose old skateboards, turning them into the glossy, colorful art pieces shown here. The skate decks are stacked, cut, shaven and polished to create both 3-D sculptures as well as wall pieces.

The series pictured here is entitled "Harvest." See more of Haroshi's works on his website, and keep up with him via social media on Facebook.

Archaeologists Discover Dungeon That May Have Held "Dracula"

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 06:00 AM PDT

  Excavation area at Tokat Castle

During a recent renovation of Tokat Castle in Turkey, archaeologists made a series of finds as they conducted excavation work. A team led by archaeologist İbrahim Çetin found two secret tunnels, a military shelter, storage rooms and two dungeons; they believe Vlad the Imapaler was held captive there in the early fifteenth century.

Prince Vlad, on whom Bram Stoker based the character of Dracula, is thought by the team to have been held in one of the newly discovered dungeons by the Ottoman Turks in the year 1442. The Ottoman empire took power in 1392 after conquering the city of Tokate.  Çetin said,

"The castle is completely surrounded by secret tunnels. It is very mysterious. It is hard to estimate in which room Dracula was kept, but he was around here."

Vlad the Impaler, as he came to be known posthumously, had the reputation while he was alive as being extremely cruel and sadistic. His favorite method of torture and execution was impalement, although he killed those he deemed enemies in almost every way possible. Methods of torture and execution  other than the impalement for which he was famous  included mutilation, amputation, burning, blinding, strangulation, scalping, skinning, exposure to wild animals and the elements and boiling alive. Reportedly in 1462, one of his enemies from Constantinople who was preparing to attack actually turned around and made a hasty retreat at the sight of 20,000 of Vlad's impaled corpses outside the capital city.

Restoration of Tokat Castle began in 2009 and is ongoing. Given the size of the area, it is likely that more discoveries will be made as the excavation continues.

9 TV and Movie Cliches We’ve Never Seen in Real Life

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website or at Facebook.

Okay, we all, every one of us, have been raised on television and the movies. And while a truly original movie or TV show is very rare, the reverse is true: cliches abound. There are dozens and dozens of movie and television cliches we have all seen and all now come to expect.

Now, let's take a movie and TV cliches we are all familiar with: the bad (disastrous) first date which leads to a future great relationship. I think we have all actually seen this cliche happen: a couple go out on their first date, do not hit it off, but later go out again and find they really like each other. This leads to an actual relationship.

Sure, this one is real life material. But what about the ones that only seem to happen in the movies or on TV? Below is a list of nine all-too-familiar TV and movie cliches we've all seen a million times, a majority of which we never see in real life!!!

1) The bad guy with perfect teeth.

Am I the only one that notices this one? It usually occurs in Westerns, i.e. there is an outlaw or a desperado, he is unshaven, grizzled, has gnarly, dirty features and a mean personality. But his teeth are always pearly white, as if he had just flossed and double-brushed with a Colgate or Crest. You see this routinely on Bonanza and other Westerns (it is much easier to discern in color).

2) The surprised two-timing lover scene.

Have you seen this one- a couple has a fight or disagreement, then the guy or the girl feels bad and decides to make amends and goes to surprise his or her counterpart at their apartment. Either the girl will answer, wearing a man's shirt, or the guy will answer shirtless, or a strange girl or guy will answer. They see the startled former lover -with a new lover- and hear them mutter, “I really wish you'd called first.” The crushed ex-lover runs or stumbles off, with no more illusions.

How about this: you're having an illicit affair or rendezvous, don't just open the door, try saying “Who is it?"

3) The gun butt knockout.

With every criminal, we are all accustomed to seeing them sneak up on the good guy and smash a gun butt on the back of their head and knock them out.

The truth is, a sharp gun butt smashing you on your skull can easily cause a concussion or more severe damage to the skull, maybe even fatal. And it will not routinely knock anyone unconscious. (The same goes for the bottle being smashed on the back of the skull- very dangerous and uncertain.)

4) The “I know it's you" to the psychotic.

How often have we seen the intrepid reporter or detective finally get clued in and figure out who the real criminal is. This is all fine and good, except he (or she) will often discover the truth when he/she is right on the killer psycho's home turf. So, instead of figuring it out, leaving and getting guns or reinforcements, the person accuses the criminal right to their face.

“Aha", says the hero/heroine, “So, it's you who killed the victims and murdered the women and strangled the babies!" The criminal then (obviously) grabs the character and ties them up, overpowers them, or whatever.

Can't they be a bit smart and say something like, “You know, i really don't know who did this nefarious crime, but I know for sure it wasn't you!" Then go and run for help.

5) The gang-up with large numbers on one one guy who beats them one-at-a-time.

How often have we seen this one: six or seven guys against one "good guy" in a fight, and they just line up and get beaten, one by one.

Why don't they just all gang up and overpower the good guy? This doesn't occur in every film or TV show, but it happens a lot.

6) The chick punching out a guy.

Okay, this one is not a long-accustomed one like all the previous ones. This one is entirely recent, like in the last few years. The chick punching a guy out.

It is almost explainable in good old very politically correct Hollywood that they just got sick of women being overpowered by guys in every film, so women now fight back. That sounds fair enough, women do not have to be complete 100% victims.

But now in almost any film of the past five years or so, a girl will fight a guy and punch him, much like John Wayne or even Bruce Lee, and knock him out. I’m not saying it couldn't ever happen, but has anyone ever seen this happen in real life?

7) The no-can-talk gag in the mouth.

Yes, yes, every gangster film, or movie with a nefarious criminal, has the scene where they capture their helpless and hapless victim and bound and gag them.

Okay, the bound part I understand, you can easily tie up someone and they will be fairly helpless. It's the additional gag, obviously to keep them from yelling for help, that is not workable. Almost always, a simple white rag or cloth is used, and is wrapped around the victim's gob, like a single ribbon on a present. But it is so easy to yell or scream or at least make loud noises with this ineffectual thing in your mouth. I’ve even seen some films where the villain just crumples up the rag and forces it into the victim's mouth.

Uh, duuuuuuhhh, spit it out!!!

8) The “He's coming to get you, so take some time off" to a cop or lawyer.

Now this one may not be seen so much in real life, simply because most of us are not well acquainted with murderers, killers, homicidal maniacs or perpetrators of other heinous crimes.

How many times have you seen this one? The cop (or the lawyer) has sent the killer to jail, but somehow, he's out now and has vowed revenge. Cut to the Captain's office (or the head lawyer's office) and the following dialogue inevitably takes place:

Captain: “He's coming to get you. look, you have some time off. Why not take a vacation?"

Cop: “Look Captain, if you think I’m going to run and hide from this guy, you're wrong!"

Captain: “You don't understand. This isn't an offer, it's an order.”

So the cop will be seen, lying on the couch in his apartment, listening to Mozart and drinking a beer, when a strange noise is heard. Said noise will inevitably be the vengeance-seeking perp. A scuffle ensues, and the killer is either killed or subdued by the cop.

9) Amnesia.

‘Nuf said (well, almost). This one may be the reverse of #7 on this list, a bit trite, a bit more of the old days.

The star gets a blow to the head and loses all recollection of their family, friends and job. Their memory is later restored, usually by a second (usually unintentional) blow to the head- and all is again well.

Has anyone ever seen an actual victim of amnesia in their life?
