The National Security Agency (News - Alert) (NSA), sometimes referred to as the No Such Agency for its comparative silence on the world stage, has taken on an increasing presence of late by accessing a variety of records, ostensibly in a bid to keep us all safer. But new documents recently leaked from the NSA itself, according to a report from eWeek, shows that there are some forms of encryption that are too tough for even the NSA to break, and that's a point that's likely going to encourage quite a few people across many different walks of life.
The eWeek report notes that many encryption programs around have either been broken or otherwise worked around by the NSA, but that the key word is “many,” as opposed to “all.” Those who still want privacy in communications, for good or ill, do still have options. The word came from the array of leaked documents surrounding the Edward Snowden affair, and revealed that some communications techniques were more prevalent than others when it came to monitoring. - Alert), for example, were “routinely” monitored, but two protocols — the TOR Onion routing system and the Zimmerman Real Time Protocol (ZRTP) — were both on the NSA's list when it came to things that couldn't quite be hacked just yet. Some reports note that that might have changed since the Snowden release, however.
Yet some protocols previously thought secure were only minor issues — if even issues at all — for the NSA; for instance, secure HTTP (HTTPS) proved little problem for the NSA to breach, and HTTPS was what many believed was going to secure the Web for some time to come.
