Can You Guess These Movies From Minimalist Drawings?

Posted: 16 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST

One doesn't have to be an artist to explore how minimalist drawings can be instantly effective in terms of communicating ideas. Playing a game of Pictionary presents one example after another of such efficient communication using nothing more than simple drawings.

Nick Barclay is a Sydney, Australia-based designer who frequently employs an elegant and artistic yet minimalist aesthetic to express far more complicated concepts, such as a series of sparse illustrations he made to signify various states of depression.

The images shown here are from Barclay's series of illustrations of popular films using only circles and colors as modes of expression. I've cropped the bottom of each poster that says what film each image represents. See if you can guess these movie titles, and then visit My Modern Met to see the answers as well as the full series of posters. Order prints and see Barclay's other work at his website.

A <i>Saturday Night Live</i> Tribute to Breaking Character

Posted: 16 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST

During the SNL 40th Anniversary Special, Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg sang about how often cast members get a case of the giggles on live TV. All of them did it, from the very first season in 1975, and continue to burst out laughing in the middle of sketches. But we love it when it happens. Jimmy Fallon was the worst, especially with Horatio Sanz. And Bill Hader. And everyone else. -via Uproxx

Snoopy's Shadow Doghouse

Posted: 16 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST

Here at Neatorama, we love the French street artist OakOak. He has a gift for placement. He can intuitively find images in ordinary life that most of us would never see without his help. For example, the shadow of a parking meter in Saint-Etienne, France forms Snoopy's doghouse. All OakOak had to do was add the famous dog himself.

What I Would Do If I Were Batman

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST

Chris Brennaman, like many people, has thought about how cool it would be to be Batman: Attractive millionaire by day, terrifying crime-fighting hero by night. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Except, I wouldn’t be awesome.

Not really. No one would be. If anyone were in fact Batman, that would mean we would have access to all the resources that make Batman, well, Batman. And having access to all that and opting to put on a cape and a cowl and patrol the cities at night in the most badass vehicles ever is probably the most irresponsible thing a person could do, especially if what that person wants to do is make real change.

What could the character do in the real world that would be more awesome than being Batman? A lot of stuff, if he weren’t so stuck in the rut of playing the hero and protecting his secret identity. Read about four major ways Bruce Wayne could be more effective than Batman at Forces of Geek.

Pregnant Mom Does "Thriller" Dance to Induce Labor

Bonnie Northsea, 32, of Gainesville, Florida is 40 weeks pregnant. It's time to induce labor. A friend suggested dancing. She decided to try the dance routine from Michael Jackson's famous music video "Thriller." So she put on the music and turned on a camera. It's been a few years since Northsea has done these particular moves. But as you can see, she's lost none of her dexterity.

22 Things You Might Not Know About <i>The Breakfast Club</i>

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST

The movie The Breakfast Club was released on February 15, 1985, 30 years ago today. Generation X related to the film and made it a hit. But there are probably a lot of facts about the movie's production that you don’t know. The cast could have been completely different.

8. Emilio Estevez was originally slated to play Bender, but Hughes couldn’t find anyone else who was right for the Andrew role, so Estevez ultimately switched and the Bender gig went to Judd Nelson.

9. Similarly, Molly Ringwald was first asked to play Allison, but she wanted the Claire (named "Cathy" in the first draft of the script) role. Hughes eventually let her have it.

10. Other actresses that could have played Claire? Robin Wright, Jodie Foster, and Laura Dern, who all auditioned for the part.

15. John Cusack was also considered for the role of Bender, as was Nicolas Cage.

But there’s more than casting facts about The Breakfast Club in a list of anniversary trivia at mental_floss.

30 Magnificent Animals That Could Become Extinct in Our Lifetime

Saiga Antelope | Source: Global Animal

The wonderfully odd creature pictured above is the critically endangered saiga antelope, native to the Eurasian Steppe region. The saiga's unusual nose filters out dust generated by the movement of its herd and warms the air it inhales in the cold winters of its habitat. Hunting and loss of habitat has caused a severe decrease of the saiga population by as much as 95% in the last 15 years.

The gharial, pictured below, is native to India and once inhabited most of its river systems. Now, with only an estimated 235 gharials left in the world, the species is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. This 350-pound, 20-foot long reptile is threatened due to loss of habitat and overfishing by humans.

Thundersnow Report

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

Remember the movie The Jerk when Steve Martin got excited about the new phone books? Jackie Mason’s line was “I wish I could get that excited about nothin’!” That’s the impression I got from this video. Storm Tracker Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel was reporting live in Plymouth, Massachusetts when he confirmed the storm was thundersnow. A true weather geek knows how rare that is, and to be reporting live at the scene excited him to no end. See the longer version of this weather report at The Weather Channel.

Massachusetts has had a huge amount of snow: Boston recorded over 45.5 inches of snowfall in February, the most in one month since at least 1872, when record-keeping began. They’ve received over 89 inches of snow this winter, another record. And more is on the way. The forecast for my corner of Kentucky calls for 6-12 inches tomorrow, the most snow since 1998. But unless the electricity goes out, I’ll be able to get to work. -via Uproxx

This Skeleton Couple Has Been Locked in an Embrace for 5,800 Years

(Photo: Greek Ministry of Culture)

Archaeologists in southern Greece uncovered the well-preserved skeletal remains of two people. DNA testing confirms that one is a man and the other a woman. According to Anastassia Papathanassiou, a member of the excavation team, they probably died in each other's arms. If so, it's a touching display of tragic love from a lost era, now frozen in time.

A Graveyard of Ships in the Desert

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST

The place called Mo'ynaq in Uzbekistan was once a thriving city, but now is little more than a ghost town. What’s really strange about Mo'ynaq is the fleet of abandoned and rusting boats. What are these boats doing sitting in the desert? The nearest shoreline is 150 kilometers away!

The secret is that Mo'ynaq used to be a port city on the Aral Sea. The water, diverted for irrigation by the Soviets, has receded to around 10% of its original size. As the fishing industry collapsed, residents of Mo'ynaq moved out, taking what was useful but leaving the scrapped fishing boats behind. The vanishing shoreline caused a host of problems for the people of Mo'ynaq. Read about what happened and see lots of pictures of the abandoned fleet at Kuriositas. -via the Presurfer

The Saturday Night Live retrospective article linked below highlights both skits and scandals from the past forty years. Some of the items in the article will be familiar not only to fans of the show, but to everyone who's kept up with entertainment news over the years. One example is the Ashlee Simpson lipsync snafu, which at the time was music news broadcast far and wide.

The video above shows the "More Cowbell" sketch with Christopher Walken, and below is the classic Chris Farley/Patrick Swayze Chippendales skit. Two more SNL moments that, if you've seen them, you likely never forgot them.

Zoo Bunny Balances on Front Legs

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

You’ve seen the cartoon trope of an animal that displays amazing tricks in order to avoid being eaten. That scenario played out in real life at a zoo in China. The zoo in Liuzhou, Guangxi, purchased five live rabbits from a vendor, intending to feed them to a giant python that requires live food. However, one of the bunnies, at only two months of age, walked around on its two front feet! The trick proved the rabbit to be more valuable alive than as feed, so it was put on display.

Zoo spokesman Xiong Shao said: "We thought that perhaps the rabbit had damaged its back legs, but when it isn't walking on its hind legs the two back legs seemed to work perfectly. It doesn't seem to be in any pain so there is no reason for it to walk like this, it can't be easy. We are completely baffled as it was too young really to have been taught any tricks, and whoever heard of teaching rabbits to walk on their front legs?"

The bunny has proved to be a very popular draw among zoo patrons. That’s one smart bunny.  -via Arbroath

Tired of people ignoring you while fooling around on their phones? Comedians Tripp and Tyler offer you their great invention: Present Spray. This handy gadget subtly draws their attention back into the conversation. Present Spray is ideal at home, the office, restaurants, and public restrooms.

I'm sympathetic to people who want to buy Present Spray. But sometimes there's a reason why people pay attention to their phones instead of you. That's why I occasionally think about carrying and distributing these cards at certain times:
