Halt Dirty, Dangerous Offshore Drilling

Dear Center Supporter, The Obama administration has just released its new five-year plan for offshore oil drilling and is now seeking public comment. Our comment? Stop offshore drilling. If this plan comes to pass, it will be a disaster for our climate. Tragedies like the Gulf's Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 put our coasts and sensitive wildlife at risk, and more drilling can do nothing but increase greenhouse gas emissions. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change and a catastrophic warming of greater than 2 degrees Celsius, we must keep that oil in the ground. Under best-case scenarios, where everything goes as industry plans, these sales will still be responsible for speeding us into climate crisis. And best-case scenarios aren't likely: Experts say there's a 75 percent chance of a large oil spill in Alaska's Chukchi Sea if companies are allowed to drill there. We can't let this happen.
