| | Caribbean Music from Colombia CD
|
El Mapurito BUDA-860124 $16.99
This CD features a collection of songs by three ensembles of Gaïteros recorded live on tour in Europe and Colombia. The music of the Gaïteros blends the Indian gaita flutes and the African alegre drums with versified Creole songs, sometimes sustained by an alto sax or a clarinet. Cumbia, porro, puya, faroto, and merengue are the result of the blending of the mystical melodies of Caribbean origin with African rhythms. Nature, humor, and erotic games are some of the many themes of these songs.

Saucejas BUDA-3788732 $16.99
Onstage, the seven women of the Saucejas ensemble embody the traditions inherited from the various regions of Latvia. In full voices, they sing resonant, expressive open-air songs, the very same that young maids sung in choruses to celebrate the beauty of nature, the arrival of spring, or the waning of summer. Powerful and beautiful, their voices unveil this little-known boreal heritage, unusual and worth discovering.

| Various Artists UNES-08101 $15.29 (10% discount from $16.99)
This album, compiled in 1996, features 17 love songs from the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music. Expressing many hues of this universal emotion, the musical performances range from solo voice to instrumental, and include traditional forms that have all but vanished, as well as those that have been influenced by modern technology.
Consider three tracks to illustrate: "Lam Sithandone" (track 1) is a courtship song performed in southern Laos. Lams feature one set of singers challenging another set and can last for hours; the excerpt on this recording is only the end of one lam. "Bar'ah" ("Dance of Youth," track 9) is a participatory dance popular among the young people of southern Oman. Although a traditional music style, this performance reflects the influence of television and electronic technology. From Greece, "Ali kaimeni mu kardia" ("My Poor Heart," track 11) documents a vocal tradition whose carriers have since passed away.

| New Orleans Brass Bands: Through the Streets of the City CD
|
Various Artists SF-40212 $16.99
For more than a century, the signature sound of New Orleans has been the brass band — at once a source of celebration, collective expression, and community pride. New Orleans Brass Bands: Through the Streets of the City , brings together for the first time in one recording three musical generations that represent three dominant styles of brass bands. The 15-track, newly recorded collection spans the full spectrum of New Orleans brass band music, both as it exists today and extending back through the tradition's history. Featured are the classic sound of the Liberty Brass Band, the modern-yet-traditional Treme Brass Band, and the funk, rap, and "bounce" influenced Hot 8 Brass Band. Together, they offer a dynamic portrait of this vibrant and distinctively American tradition.
This recording is the seventh release in the Smithsonian Folkways African American Legacy Series, co-presented with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Ensemble Alla Francesca BUDA-860261 $16.99
This twelfth installment in the Collection Musical Heritage of the Jews of France is dedicated to the religious and festival songs of the Jewish communities living in Northern France in the second half of the 13th century. During this troubled time, spanning the burning of the Talmud through the great expulsion of 1306, Jews shared much of their daily life and language with the Christians, as well as a common taste in literature, monuments, the sounds of cities and fairs, their joie-de-vivre, and popular music.

| Various Artists UNES-08054 $15.29
The Aka Pygmies are known as one of the oldest populations on the African continent, occupying parts of the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo. Music is a key element of the social and spiritual life of the community, and each person is introduced to musical practice at an early age with counting rhymes and singing games. Since the Aka lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle, music is usually only vocals, leading to a complex polyphonic system with rich harmonies from a chorus. Any accompanying instruments—small drums, iron blades, plant stalk whistles—are easy to carry, used for other daily purposes, or immediately discarded.
This recording was annotated, compiled, and produced by Simha Arom, who is considered a world expert on Central African music. In addition to this album, Arom's recordings are featured on more than a dozen other albums in the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music, including Greece: Vocal Monodies and Benin: Bariba and Somba Music.

Cameroon: Baka Pygmy Music CD
|
Various Artists UNES-08029 $15.29
The Baka people inhabit the rain forests of Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and Gabon. Outcast from neighboring societies due to their short stature and nomadic lifestyle, the Baka have retained their own language and ancient forms of cultural expression.
Baka music is similar to other pygmy ethnic groups' music around Africa, signified by polyphonic vocal choirs, with several melodies sung simultaneously, and polyrhythmic percussion. The "singing the song" is done by the women, while the men "march the song" (dance). The only musical accompaniment is percussion consisting of simple drums, rattles, and iron blades struck against each other.
This mid-1970s recording was made by Simha Arom and Phillipe Renaud. Arom, a noted expert on the music of central Africa, also co-wrote the liner notes. In addition to this album, Arom's recordings are featured on more than a dozen other albums in the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music, including Musical Sources and Symphony of Nature.
