The Surprisingly Complex Design of the Ziploc Bag

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Wei Tchou)

Technically speaking, Ziploc is a brand name. Whatever the brand, the design concept is the same: a bag that separates and reseals with a plastic zipper. Mechanically speaking, it's quite complex--more than you might think for a cheap, disposable product.

(Image: US Patent Office)

Danish inventor Borge Madsen developed the practical resealable bag in 1950. It's a zipper with tiny hooks. Outside runners help guide your fingers so that you align the two sections properly. Bruce Peterson decsribes the history and technology of the resealable bag in Wired:

The zipper features microscopic J-shaped grooves (“hooks”) and arrowhead-like stems that interlock. Look closely at a double zipper bag and you’ll see this line of tiny teeth on the upper row, toward the lips of the bag. Running your thumb and forefinger along the track clasps the hooks around the stems. The zipper clicks at about 50 decibels to let you know you’re doing it right. But misalignment due to your clumsiness can create gaps.

So to solve this, Ziploc added a row of Xs and opposing convex dimples that create a haptic interface to guide your fingers for proper alignment. “I liken it to walking on a sidewalk with holes,” says one Ziploc researcher who can’t give his name because parent company SC Johnson won’t let him. “Suddenly there’s a hole and you step down and then you step back up and then down into another hole. [It] creates the sensation of the teeth—the bomp-bomp-bomp-bomp.”

Man Walking Nearly Misses 15-Foot-High Flames Shooting from Manhole

A man walking down the street to get himself a burger in the borough of Solihull, West Midlands, England nearly became broiled meat himself from fifteen-foot-high flames shooting out of a manhole. Shiraz Nawaz heard buzzing a few feet behind him and turned around, only to see black smoke followed by flames shooting up from an open manhole.

The quick-witted Shiraz warned his destination restaurant nearby to evacuate and turn off their gas line. Firemen extinguished the flames, which were caused by fire in an underground electrical box. Shiraz said,

“I’ve never seen anything like it, and I have been in the building trade. The guy in the shop grabbed me a couple of burgers after everything, so I guess it had a happy ending.”

Let no flames, high water or other disaster stand between a man and his burger. All ended well, indeed.

Fruity Pebbles Ice Cream Cone

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 02:00 AM PDT

After making an ice cream cone out of Rice Krispie treats, it occurred to Nick Chipman of DudeFoods that he could make something similar with Fruity Pebbles, the colorful Flintstones-themed cereal. He used a Rice Krispie treat recipe, but substituted Fruity Pebbles for Rice Krispies. So with butter, marshmallows, and a big heap of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, he made a complete meal that fits in one hand.

I wonder what other cereals would work well with this approach. Maybe big biscuit Shredded Wheat or Urkel-os.

Oreo Trick Shots

How many way can you dunk an Oreo into a glass of milk? The sky is the limit! Peter Bamforth has a steady hand, an understanding of basic physics, and a seemingly unlimited supply of Oreo cookies. This video has some very impressive shots, but you have to wonder how many outtakes there are. That’s gotta be a lot of crumbled cookies and spilled milk, but a viral video is nothing to cry over. -via Time

College Student Grills Bacon in the Middle of Class

Tyler S. Brain, a student at Mississippi State University, spotted another student in a lecture hall cooking bacon on an electric grill in the middle of class. In fact, he was in the front row!

The professor is, quite rightly, unperturbed. While at Starfleet Academy, Captain Kirk won the famed Kobayashi Maru simulation by cheating. He was given a special commendation for original thinking. This college student deserves the same treatment.

Crow Trolls Cat

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

This poor cat. He’s up a tree with an annoying crow giving him what for. The crow knows he’s got the advantage of being able to fly if the tree branch breaks under both of them. This video out of Russia may illustrate revenge, karma, bullying, or maybe life imitating art. The Daily Dot pegs it:

It’s pretty much straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon, minus the whistle and cymbal crash that accompany smacks to the head.

Yes, but the music chosen to accompany this video is a hoot in its own way.

The United States Is Only 4 Presidents Old

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT

When President Barack Obama was born in 1961, President Herbert Hoover was still alive. When President Hoover was born in 1874, President Andrew Johnson was still alive. When President Johnson was born in 1808, President John Adams—the second President and one of the original revolutionaries—was still alive.

So the U.S. is only 4 Presidents old.

The Washington Post created this chart to illustrate when Presidential lives overlapped. George Washington and James Buchanan lived at the same time. So do George. H.W. Bush and the late William Howard Taft.

In honor of Earth Day, check out this gorgeous footage of the Keukenhof (kitchen garden) in the Netherlands, which is the second largest flower garden in the world. Covering an area of 79 acres, the garden is in the town of Lisse, near Amsterdam. The drone flight view over these seemingly endless, neat rows of tulips, hyacinths and other bulb flowers is a mesmerizing visual splendor. Willem van Gogh, a relative of Vincent van Gogh, officially opened this 66th year of Keukenhof's display in commemoration of 2015 being the 125th year since Vincent's death. -Via The Presurfer

Taj Mahal Made out of Toast

India’s famed Taj Mahal appeared on a street corner in London on Saturday. Local resident Tom McKenzie snapped this picture, but wasn’t able to find out who made it. It appears to be made entirely out of toasted white bread with the crusts removed.

I love it! The world needs more toast art.

Surgeon Finds Woman's Embryonic Twin in Her Brain

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

A brain surgeon was operating on a 26-year-old woman to remove what he thought was a brain tumor when he found an extremely rare circumstance: an embryonic twin, or "teratoma," lodged in her brain. The teratoma, complete with hair, teeth and bone, was the mysterious ailment causing Yamini Karanam trouble with reading- and general comprehension.

Karanam was working on a PhD at Indiana University when she noticed the comprehension problems. Frustrated by two doctors whose advice contradicted each other, she found her Los Angeles surgeon, Dr. Hrayr Shahinian, through independent research. Shahinian described his minimally invasive procedure to NBC Los Angeles,

"Unlike traditional brain surgery where you open the skull and use metal retractors and you bring a microscope to see in the depths of the brain, what we're doing is keyhole surgery."

The doctor conducts the surgery using fiber-optic technology with digital imagery. A small incision is made into the brain and an endoscope is inserted, which carefully scrapes away at the tumor.

Read more and see a video on this rare medical find, which Karanam jokingly calls her "evil twin," at NBC Los Angeles.

Midway through the encounter, Bayne describes the experience as “the best day ever.” While at the Rapid Run Training Center in Morriston, Florida, she met a foal who was in the mood to cuddle. The foal gently pushed her to the ground, then lay on top of her. Bayne petted as the foal wagged her tail.

Bayne aptly wrote:

Little Girl Born Without Feet Receives Puppy Born Without a Paw

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT

A three-year-old girl born without hands and feet due to a birth defect now has a special new friend, thanks to the forethought and generosity of a South Carolina dog breeder.

Though her family lives in Tennessee, Sapphyre Johnson has been a patient at Shriner's Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina since she was an infant. Greenville dog breeder Karen Riddle contacted the hospital asking whether they knew of any patients who could benefit from a puppy born without a paw. Though other breeders had advised Riddle to put the puppy down, she felt he was special and had a purpose. The hospital staff paired the white German Shepherd pup, named Lieutenant Dan after the character in Forrest Gump, with Sapphyre and her family. It's been a wonderful match.

While trying to find a patient who would appreciate Lieutenant Dan, hospital employee Elaine Hardin showed a picture of him to Sapphyre. The little girl became animated. Hardin said,

"She said,  'That’s my puppy. He’s just like me.’ He’s a special dog and he’s going to a special child.”

Honeymooners Caught in a Fish Tornado

When honeymooners Teri and Jeff Hester went diving off the Baja California peninsula in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico, they found themselves in the middle of an astonishing sight: a "tornado" made of fish!

"We were swimming along and saw a small band of Jacks heading away from us, so we followed them," Jeff told Caters News, "That small band slowly grew bigger and bigger, until out of the distance, this massive fish tornado appeared. I was awestruck. I had never seen anything like that before in my life."

Fish tornado? Now that's a cool school of fish!

Father and Daughter Find Fox Den Full of Pups on Their Property

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Philip Wang owns a home in Princeton, New Jersey on seven acres of property. One day while walking with his daughter Alice, he discovered a fox den and the adorable fox pups pictured here. Philip took these wonderful photos of the litter, which show them at their fuzzy wuzzy, cuddly and inquisitive best.

Now that the babies' eyes have opened and they're alert and exploring their surroundings, they are likely being taught by their elders to hunt. Foxes' first hunting lesson is generally for small rodents, which they catch with a characteristic high jump and pounce. Typically they do their hunting at night.

How fortunate for the Wang family. There's nothing like a zoology lesson in your backyard, particularly one at this magnitude of cute.

See more pictures of the baby fox siblings here.

In 1851, A Man Picked Two Unpickable Locks and Changed Security Forever

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 01:00 PM PDT

In the 1770s, master locksmith Joseph Bramah made quite a few improvements to the security of locks. He was so confident in his inventions that he issued a challenge, written on the lock above: “The artist who can make an instrument that will pick or open this lock shall receive 200 Guineas the moment it is produced.” Another locksmith named Jeremiah Chubb issued a challenge with his own lock, featuring his own innovations. Those two challenges stood against every attempt for a long time -until The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London.

One of the attendees was A. C. Hobbs, an American locksmith. Back in the states, Hobbs had made a name for himself by showing bank managers that their locks could be easily picked, and convincing them to buy one of his. Hobbs was selling lots of locks this way.

On day one of the exhibition, Hobbs publicly announced that he would pick the Chubb detector lock—the one that stops working if you pick it incorrectly.

Hobbs managed to unlock both locks! Gizmodo has the story of how he did it, and how his feat affected the security business ever since.  -via the Presurfer

Furore: The Little Italian Beach Hidden in a Fjord

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Fotoweb)

It’s so picturesque that I want to go there immediately! Furore, a village on Italy’s Amalfi coast, is known for its fjord, which is called the Fiordo. This gorge cuts straight into the rock, bringing a narrow strip of the sea to a lovely sandy beach. The town is hidden inside this rift, which is why Furore is sometimes called the “town that doesn’t exist.” There, at the beach, you can rest in the shade provided by the mountains or cool yourself in the blue water.

If you’re a bit more adventurous, then you can walk across the bridge that connects the two sides, then dive 98 feet from the bridge into the crystal clear water. It hosts an international diving competition. You can see more photos at Amusing Planet.

Ultimate Drone Save

What’s My Starbucks Name?

Try giving your name to Starbucks and see how they mangle it at the generator What’s My Starbucks Name? Created by Justin Hook (or Jolina, as the generator called him), it is a joke based on a couple of sites that document misspellings of names at Starbucks.

You can give them a second chance by clicking “That’s not what I ordered.”

As you can see, there is no getting my name right, but did they have to be so snarky?  -via Laughing Squid

This Restaurant/Bar Offers 1,440 Different Types of Bloody Marys

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT

(Photo: The Wayfarer)

The Wayfarer is a high-end restaurant and bar in New York City. The bar has so many options that you can design a Bloody Mary cocktail from among 1,440 possible permutations. Tony Meverick reports for Thrillist:

Here's the deal: the base price per Bloody Mary is $12, which includes three options from the card. After that, each additional option is 50 cents. First you pick your alcohol (options like vodka, flavored vodka, chili liqueur, and more), then the base (traditional, spicy, tomato water, or the chef's favorite, Green Juice), then you choose what goes on the rim (things like poppy and sesame seed, paprika, celery salt, salt and pepper, and more), and finally, the topping (shrimp, jerky, roasted tomato, cheddar cheese, pork rind, and more). In other words, you'll probably have to have more than one to truly experience such freedom.

But I can find no evidence that you can get a Bloody Mary that includes an entire deep fried chicken. This seems like a serious oversight for a restaurant that wants to set itself apart from the proles.

P.S. This is how you mix a Miss Cellania:

1/2 cup of espresso
2 oz. Kahlua
2 oz. Tia Maria

Serve hot, then run away as fast as you can.

10 Reasons Jackie Chan Is Pretty Freaking Awesome

Jackie Chan is a great kung fu actor who is totally charming, but if you aren't a huge fan (or even if you are), this Top Tenz list might just make you love him even more. Aside from facts about his skills as a stuntman and martial artist, the list gives you a good idea of why Jackie Chan is just a good guy all around. For example, he's setting a great example by not only refusing to eat shark fin soup, but also by making others decide not to as well.

10 Hilariously Cheesy Fast Food Training Videos

Posted: 22 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT

(Image Link)

Working in the fast food industry means having the worst experiences with customers, feeling underappreciated, and discovering that you no longer like fast food because you're around it all the time.

A new hire's journey into the depths of Kentucky Fried madness started with a simple training video, a cheesy video entree that made new employees feel like dipping their heads in the fryer!

1. Hardee's "Your Reputation Is On The Line" (1988)-

Hardee's has a reputation for making high quality hamburgers quickly, so their employees are expected to put their reputations on the line every time they hand a burger to a hungry person.

As a new employee of Hardee's you're expected to follow sequence in order to preserve your reputation because "when we don't follow sequence we tend to get lost". Wait, is Hardee's actually a cult?

(YouTube Link)

2. McDonald's "Clean It" (1984)-

When you want to encourage your employees to keep their McDonald's location spotless you offer up an incentive, and in the 80s the best(?) incentive was a visit from Michael Jackson!

Sadly, these employees never got to meet the real MJ, only a sad imitator who, admittedly, has some serious moonwalking skills and a sweet sparkly jumpsuit. Where's Ronald when you need him?

(YouTube Link)

3. Chuck E. Cheese's University "The Character" (1991)-

People don't expect great pizza when they head out to Chuck E. Cheese's, but they do expect the main mouse himself to be on top of his mascot game.

For those who choose to don the sacred skin of Chuck E. their journey begins with this training video, a lesson in how to make the most of being "inside Chuck".

(YouTube Link)

4. Del Taco Training Video (2013)-

Here's a totally hip and crazy current training video created for Del Taco, which proves that the cheese factor is still alive and well in the fast food training video industry.

It starts off rather ho-hum, but quickly turns into a riveting docu-drama when the beret clad director is introduced into the scene. I need a glass of water, because this training video is a Del Scorcho!

(YouTube Link)

5. Godfather's Pizza "Training By The Slice: Welcome" (90s?)-

Godfather's Pizza never made it to the big leagues like their pizza pals Domino's and the Hut, but they had something those other chains couldn't touch- a Mafia godfather's blessing!

Apparently he also does all the training too, so slice those pies up good or you'll be sleepin' with the fishes.

(YouTube Link)

6. Jack In The Box "Welcome To A Winning Team" (1985)-

Before Jack In The Box restaurants had Jack's overinflated head promoting their restaurants they had the faces of the employees themselves, and their fun little work costumes uniforms!

This training video from a laserdisc b-side is sorely in need of Jack's knack for comedy, although the fact that they call a microwave a "grill area" is pretty darn funny!

(YouTube Link)

7. Wendy's "Grill Skills" (1989)-

Wanna make your training video hip and fresh for the incoming wave of young employees? Then you gotta add a rapper bustin' out a rap routine to your video, yo!

Wendy's was clearly trying to appeal to urban youth in this cheesy classic training video, because nothing says street cred like a little redheaded girl in pig tails.

(Fast forward to around 3:30 to see the rap attack portion of the video)

(YouTube Link)

8. Burger King "Robbery Training Video" (1978)-

Even though this is merely a clip from a Burger King training video lost to time, it still has plenty of cinematic action, awkward situations and a riveting storyline involving crime and passion.

It's also sad to note that Uncle Fester turned to a life of crime after the Addam's Family was cancelled. I thought Gomez was a millionaire?!

(YouTube Link)

9. McDonald's "Fast Food Training" (mid-80s)-

This video segment is special because it stars the extremely talented John Mahoney as the voice of the McDonald's corporation, teaching the new recruits how to hack it in the fast food game.

The general consensus seems to be that this is a comedy sketch created using the CEO's speech to the McDonald's franchise owners, but if you know where this sketch is from please fill us in so we can keep our bin levels at max!

(YouTube Link)

10. ShowBiz Pizza Place "Artistic Director Training Video" (1987)-

Dining at ShowBiz Pizza Place was supposed to be a theatrical party experience, complete with pizza and animatronic animal bands, so naturally they hired an artistic director to make sure everything ran smoothly.

However, when the artistic director from corporate tells you to say lines like "You look like a sausage lover to me" or "you look like you can handle a large coke" to your customers it's probably best to ignore his advice and improvise your own cheesy lines.

(YouTube Link)

Next time you go out and grab a bite to eat at a fast food restaurant have a little sympathy for the workers, because they've not only had to deal with crappy food and crappy customers- they were also forced to watch an utterly crappy training video!
